Metastatic neoplasms of the breast: fine-needle aspiration cytology of two cases.

Even when clinical data strongly suggest the presence of a metastatic neoplasm in the breast, this occurrence almost invariably raises great problems in diagnostic pathology. Both cases presented here had a well-recognized primitive neoplasm located elsewhere. Nonetheless, great importance was given to the application of ancillary techniques; the immunostains for "breast discriminants"--GCDFP15, HMFG1, and HMFG2--on tissue sections helped the recognition of a metastatic renal cell carcinoma; and the stains for S100 protein, smooth muscle actin, cytokeratins, and neurofilaments on cytologic mat

Myopericytoma: a pleural-based spindle cell neoplasm off the beaten path.

Myopericytoma is a recently described hemangiopericytoma-like neoplasm with myoid differentiation. These tumors are typically located in the subcutaneous and soft tissues of the extremities. The authors report a rare pleural-based pulmonary myopericytoma in a 58-year-old woman. The lesion was grossly homogeneous and well circumscribed. Microscopically, it was composed of densely packed spindle cells organized as whorls and short interlacing fascicles with a concentric perivascular distribution. Immunohistochemical reactions were positive for vimentin, smooth muscle actin (SMA), muscle-specific

Pan-TRK immunohistochemistry in gynaecological mesenchymal tumours: diagnostic implications and pitfalls.

AIMS: NTRK-rearranged sarcomas of the female genital tract mainly occur in the uterus (more commonly cervix than corpus) and are characterized by a "fibrosarcoma-like" morphology and NTRK gene rearrangements. These neoplasms may exhibit histological overlap with other entities and can present diagnostic difficulties without molecular confirmation. Pan-TRK immunohistochemistry was developed to identify tumours harbouring NTRK rearrangements. The aim of this study was to characterize pan-TRK immunohistochemical expression in a large cohort of gynaecological mesenchymal neoplasms and investigate

Myopericytoma presenting as a painful dark subungual discoloration.

Myopericytoma is an uncommon benign neoplasm that arises from the perivascular myoid cells. It typically presents as a painless well-circumscribed cutaneous or soft-tissue nodule, most commonly on the extremities of adults. Histologically, it is characterized by spindle-shaped myoid-appearing cells with a concentric arrangement in vessel walls, that are immunoreactive to alpha-smooth muscle actin and often for h-caldesmon, but negative for other smooth muscle markers. Herein, we present an unusual case of a painful subungual myopericytoma presenting as a dark subungual discoloration.

Multiphoton microscopy in the diagnostic assessment of pediatric solid tissue in comparison to conventional histopathology: results of the first international online interobserver trial.

Purpose: Clear resection margins are paramount for good outcome in children undergoing solid tumor resections. Multiphoton microscopy (MPM) can provide high-resolution, real-time, intraoperative microscopic images of tumor tissue. Objective: This prospective international multicenter study evaluates the diagnostic accuracy, feasibility, and interobserver congruence of MPM in diagnosing solid pediatric tissue and tumors for the first time. Material and methods: Representative fresh sections from six different neonatal solid tissues (liver, lung, kidney, adrenal gland, heart muscle, testicle) an

Granular cell tumor of the neck treated using a local flap: A case report.

RATIONALE: Granular cell tumors are rare soft tissue neoplasms derived from nerve that can arise in the oral cavity, skin, or gastrointestinal tract. Various hypotheses have proposed that granular cell tumors originate from the nervous system, skeletal muscle, and Schwann cells. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 47-year-old male patient presented with a 5 cm cervical mass. DIAGNOSES: Computed tomography showed a 4 cm-sized homogeneous enhancing mass infiltrating the sternocleidomastoid muscle and even the surrounding skin. INTERVENTIONS: Extensive surgical resection of the tumor including the skin was pe

Uterine leiomyoma and cystic endometrial hyperplasia in a captive older adult Asian elephant (Elephas maximus): A case report.

BACKGROUND: This report describes a case of uterine leiomyoma and cystic endometrial hyperplasia in an Asian elephant (Elephas maximus). CASE DESCRIPTION: A 74-year-old female elephant in captivity was necropsied. At necropsy, the uterus was markedly enlarged, and a firm, white nodule measuring 10 × 10 × 8 cm protruded from the uterine wall into the lumen of the right uterine segment. Additionally, multiple cystic dilations (0.5-4 cm in diameter) were observed throughout the uterine segment. The mucosa was diffusely red with a moderate amount of crumbly clots in the lumen. Histologically, a b

Novel CRTC1::MRTFB(MKL2) Gene Fusion Detected in Myxoid Mesenchymal Neoplasms With Myogenic Differentiation Involving Bone and Soft Tissues.

Appropriate classification of fusion-driven bone and soft tissue neoplasms continues to evolve, often relying on the careful integration of morphologic findings with immunohistochemical, molecular, and clinical data. Herein, we present 3 cases of a morphologically distinct myxoid mesenchymal neoplasm with myogenic differentiation and novel CRTC1::MRTFB (formerly MKL2) gene fusion. Three tumors occurred in 1 male and 2 female patients with a median age of 72 years (range: 28-78). Tumors involved the left iliac bone, the right thigh, and the left perianal region with a median size of 4.0 cm (4.0

Lipomatous tumours of soft tissues: an update.

This review summarizes the clinicopathological features of recently characterized variants of lipomatous tumours of soft tissue, attempts to deal with some difficult conceptual issues relating to adipocytic neoplasms and aims to provide an update on cytogenetic aspects of fatty tumours. Myolipoma is a rare benign neoplasm, occurring most frequently in adults in the deep soft tissue of the abdomen or retroperitoneum, and is composed of irregularly admixed mature adipose and smooth muscle tissues. Chondroid lipoma represents an unusual benign lesion occurring mainly in adult females subcutaneous

Immunohistochemical distribution of tubulin beta II in human normal and neoplastic tissues.

Tubulin is the major constituent protein of microtubules. In mammals, there are seven beta-tubulins and six alpha-tubulins. Each beta-tubulin isotype has a unique tissue distribution. The purpose of this study was to describe the distribution of tubulin beta II in normal and neoplastic human tissues with immunohistochemical techniques. We obtained normal tissues from 33 cases (8 fetuses, 17 neonates, 3 children and 5 adults) and 121 samples of neoplastic tissue from surgical specimens or at autopsy. Immunohistochemical staining for tubulin beta II was performed using a monoclonal antibody, KNY

Reconstruction of a bilateral hypoplastic soft palate in a cat.

A 21-year-old thoroughbred mare had a 35 x 14 x 10 cm mass involving the mammary gland. Metastases were found in the kidneys, lungs, skeletal muscles, and regional lymph nodes. Histopathologic examination of the tumor revealed a ductal solid carcinoma with extensive intraductal and intralobular involvement and focal infiltration of the adjacent stroma. The intralobular neoplasms were divided into irregularly shaped islands and sheets of polygonal and spindle-shaped epithelial cells by thick or thin fibrous connective tissue bundles. The neoplastic cells had a small or moderate amount of cytopl

[Hepatic epithelioid angiomyolipoma/PEComa and focal nodular hyperplasia in a patient with a previous history of cutaneous melanoma].

Hepatic perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are uncommon mesenchymal neoplasms. PEComas concurrent with other hepatic lesions is a very rare occurrence, with only two previously reported cases. We report a primary hepatic PEComa associated with focal nodular hyperplasia in a patient with a previous history of cutaneous melanoma. Diagnostic imaging studies suggested a hepatic adenoma and the patient underwent a segmentectomy. The tumor was mainly composed of epithelioid cells, adipose tissue and smooth muscle fibers intermixed with blood vessels. The neoplastic cells were diffusely i

Destructive invasion of the clavicle by desmoid tumor: a case report.

Desmoid tumors are rare, soft-tissue neoplasms that do not metastasize, but exhibit aggressive growth and local invasion. They originate most frequently from abdominal fascial structures, although they can also appear at extra-abdominal sites. The most common extra-abdominal locations include the shoulder, chest wall, back, thigh, and head and neck. In children, desmoid tumors are more infiltrative, having a tendency towards osseous involvement more frequently than in adult patients. We report acase of a supraspinatus muscle desmoid tumor in a female patient with clavicle destruction.

Desmoplastic fibroblastoma presenting as a parotid tumour: a case report and review of the literature.

Desmoplastic fibroblastomas (DFs) are rare fibrous soft tissue tumours that usually arise in subcutaneous tissue or skeletal muscle in a variety of anatomical sites. These lesions most frequently present as painless, slow-growing mobile masses. A case of DF is described in a 47-year-old man who presented with a painless right parotid mass of 2 months duration. At surgery, the lesion was attached to the tail of the right parotid gland. Histopathological examination demonstrated a fibrous lesion comprising spindled and stellate shaped fibroblasts with focal myxoid stromal change. The features we

SRF fusion genes in myoid soft tissue tumors.

Serum response factor (SRF) is a ubiquitously expressed transcription factor that regulates immediate early genes, cytoskeletal organization, and muscle differentiation. Although SRF plays critical roles in development and cell growth, genomic alterations of SRF have long appeared absent in human neoplasms. Recently, however, recurrent SRF gene rearrangements have been identified in a spectrum of soft tissue tumors with myogenic features, including rhabdomyosarcomas, perivascular tumors, inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors, myoepitheliomas and peripheral nerve sheath tumors. This review summar

The desmoid tumour: local control after surgical treatment.

Desmoid tumours are uncommon non-malignant tumours that show a locally aggressive growth pattern and a high local recurrence rate after surgery. Approximately 10% of the desmoid tumours are associated with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). Variable natural history of the disease challenges treatment decision-making in the absence of prospective, randomised data. Association of this rare tumour to GIST is speculated and the tumorigenesis may share common steps. This study reviews given treatment and reports prognostic factors for local control and concurrent neoplasms in patients evaluated

Neoplasms of the major and minor salivary glands are morphologically and a clinically diverse group of neoplasms which lead the clinician to diagnostic and management challenges. This article aims to report a case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma in 83 - year - old woman who presented in the dermatology clinic with a tumour mass in the left auricular area. The patient complained of pain and abnormal bleeding of the mass. The lesion was examined, and surgical treatment was performed. A tumour was extirpated, and partial resection of both the parotid gland and the sternocleidomastoid muscle was done.

[Lipoleiomyoma of the uterus].

The presence of fatty tissue in the myometrium is anomalous; this alteration has been interpreted either as a lipomatous degeneration or as a metaplasia of smooth muscle cells or, still, as a real neoplasm, frequently associated with a leiomyoma, the so-called lipoleiomyoma. The observation of a case of lipoleiomyoma stimulated us to ascertain the real incidence of this lesion which is commonly considered to be rare. We examined 620 single or multiple uterine leiomyomas with extensive sampling of all the areas suspected to contain fatty tissue islands. Five times out of seven the presence of f
