Blistering on a squamous cell carcinoma graft site in a patient with bullous pemphigoid.

Bullous pemphigoid is a blistering disorder with blisters arising from normal, otherwise uninvolved tissue or from urticarial or erythematous plaques localized mainly on the trunk or upper extremities. Neoplasms, such as squamous cell carcinomas, have also been reported in patients with bullous pemphigoid. Large squamous cell carcinomas (greater than 8 cm in diameter) are best treated by surgical excision. We report a patient with bullous pemphigoid and squamous cell carcinoma who showed blisters on his graft site.

Gingival squamous cell carcinoma: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Squamous cell carcinoma is a malignant epithelial neoplasm characterized by variable clinical manifestations. When located in the gingiva, this neoplasm may mimic common inflammatory lesions. The aim of this study was to report a case of atypical squamous cell carcinoma, in which the patient had no risk factors for the development of this neoplasm. METHODS: A 61 year old Caucasian female was seen with a 3 month history of a rapidly growing, painful nodule in the gingiva adjacent to tooth #11. Clinical examination revealed a proliferative lesion in the vestibular marginal gingiva o

[A case of squamous cell carcinoma of the lung associated with acanthosis nigricans and solitary bronchial papilloma].

A 58-year-old man diagnosed as having acanthosis nigricans symmetrically distributed on the face, neck, hands, navel and external genitals, was admitted to our department for further investigation of abnormal chest films. Bronchoscopy revealed squamous cell carcinoma of left S6 and solitary bronchial papilloma of left S3. After left pneumonectomy, facial hyperpigmentation improved slightly. About half of the reported cases of acanthosis nigricans are accompanied by various kinds of malignant neoplasms, mostly adenocarcinomas of the digestive system. The association with squamous cell carcinoma

Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx: report of a early laryngeal cancer.

Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma is a recently recognized, rare and aggressive variant of squamous cell carcinoma with a predilection to occur in base of the tongue, hypopharynx and larynx (especially the supraglottic tract). It is usually diagnosed in advanced stage, frequently with distant metastases, requiring aggressive surgical intervention. The prognosis is remarkably poor even after the association of radiotherapy or chemotherapy. Nevertheless recently it has been reported that in the early stage this neoplasm seems to have a behaviour less aggressive, similar to conventional squamous c

Metastatic laryngeal basaloid squamous cell carcinoma simulating primary small cell carcinoma of the lung on fine needle aspiration lung biopsy. A case report.

BACKGROUND: First described in 1986, the basaloid squamous variant of laryngeal carcinoma is an uncommon, aggressive neoplasm with early presentation of metastatic disease and widespread dissemination. It is characterized primarily by its biphasic morphologic appearance. CASE: A 64-year-old female smoker presented with left hilar and right lower lung lobe masses. The fine needle aspiration cytologic findings were consistent with features of primary undifferentiated small cell carcinoma. CONCLUSION: The basaloid squamous cell carcinoma of head and neck region is a highly malignant neoplasm wi

Keratoacanthoma: is it a real entity?

Keratoacanthoma of the skin and well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma are two cutaneous neoplasms that most often occur in sun-exposed sites of light-skinned persons. It is often difficult to distinguish these two from each other either clinically or histologically. The view that these two cutaneous neoplasms are part of the same disease entity is not new. We reviewed 150 patients with these two diseases in an effort to see whether any specific criteria for diagnosis and treatment could be achieved. It is our hypothesis that they are not separate diseases but within the spectrum of the s

Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma arising in [corrected] the renal pelvis.

Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma is an uncommon and highly aggressive variant that can occur anywhere squamous cancers occur. It is most often seen in the head and neck, the perianal region, and the female genital tract. It is extremely rare in the urinary system. In this article, we report the first known case of basaloid squamous cell carcinoma arising in the renal pelvis. Given the aggressive nature of this neoplasm, it should not be omitted from the differential diagnosis of neoplasms arising from the urothelium.

Stem cell markers (cytokeratin 15, cytokeratin 19 and p63) in in situ and invasive cutaneous epithelial lesions.

The inherent longetivity of stem cells causes them to be susceptible to multiple genetic hits. Thus, it is not surprising that stem cells are implicated in the etiopathogenesis of select cutaneous neoplasms. However, most studies to date are restricted to the use of a single marker (p63, cytokeratin-15 or cytokeratin-19) and do not appear to compare distribution of stem cell markers in a spectrum of cutaneous in situ versus invasive epithelial malignancies. In this study, we evaluate expression of cytokeratin-15, cytokeratin-19, and p63 in a series of primary cutaneous epithelial lesions that

Spindle Cell Squamous Cell Carcinoma Arising in a Chronic Burn Scar: A Case Report and Literature Review of Diagnostic Pitfalls and Oncologic Management Considerations.

Cutaneous spindle cell squamous cell carcinoma (SpSCC) is a rare variant of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma that can clinically mimic scar change and histologically overlap with other cutaneous spindle cell neoplasms. We report a 60-year-old woman with a nonhealing ulcerated lesion arising within a longstanding childhood abdominal burn scar. Histopathology demonstrated a mitotically active dermal spindle cell tumor with pancytokeratin positivity and patchy cytokeratin 5/6 expression. This rare case highlights that spindle cell squamous cell carcinoma can arise as a late malignant transformat

A Case Series of Primary Cutaneous Sarcomatoid Carcinoma With Aberrant Smooth Muscle Actin Expression: A Clinicopathologic and Immunophenotypic Study.

Primary cutaneous sarcomatoid squamous cell carcinoma can show significant histologic overlap with other malignant spindle cell tumors, posing a diagnostic challenge. Even with a wide array of immunohistochemical markers, the exact line of differentiation can be a challenge to identify in some cases. The picture is further complicated by the aberrant expression of myofibroblastic markers [such as smooth muscle actin (SMA)] by these neoplasms, along with a concomitant loss of conventional epithelial markers. The histologic differential diagnoses of primary cutaneous sarcomatoid squamous cell ca

Morphological comparison between benign keratinizing cystic squamous cell tumours of the lung and squamous lesions of the skin in rats.

Approximately 700 cases of keratinizing cystic squamous lung lesions in rats were investigated by light microscopy in order to clarify the nomenclature and classification of these lesions. The structure of benign keratinizing cystic squamous cell tumours of the lung was compared to that of cystic squamous lesions in the skin of rats, with consideration of data from the literature. We conclude that the reviewed keratinizing cystic squamous cell lesions of the lung are true neoplasms and that the growth pattern of these cystic lesions is inconsistent with that of a simple cyst. [Association of Morris' syndrome with squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva].

We described a case of squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva in a patient with Morris' syndrome. In these patients, there is an increased risk of gonadal neoplasms. On the contrary, neoplasms originating from the vulvo-vaginal tract are very rare. Neoplasms arising from the neovagina have been reported. Therefore, a continued periodic surveillance of the external genitalia and the vagina is indicated.

Rostral cranial fossa and sinonasal neoplasms with cribriform plate involvement in 32 dogs and 17 cats.

The rostral cranial fossa (RCF) consists of the sphenoid and ethmoid bones, which accommodate the olfactory bulbs and nerves along the recesses of the cribriform plate. Neoplasms located in the vicinities of the RCF can compress and/or invade the cribriform plate. Here we describe the clinical and pathologic findings of neoplasms involving the cribriform plate in 32 dogs and 17 cats autopsied over a 13-y period. The average ages of affected dogs and cats were 9.2 y and 9.7 y, respectively. No sex or breed predisposition was evident in dogs, but 13 of 18 cats were spayed females and 14 of 18 we

HPV- and non-HPV-related subtypes of penile squamous cell carcinoma (SCC): Morphological features and differential diagnosis according to the new WHO classification (2015).

The majority of penile carcinomas are squamous cell carcinomas originating in the squamous mucosa covering the glans, coronal sulcus, or inner surface of the foreskin, the 3 latter sites comprising the penile anatomical compartments. There is a variegated spectrum of subtypes of penile squamous cell carcinomas according to recent classification schemes. Currently, because of etiological and prognostic considerations, 2 morphologically and molecularly distinctive groups of subtypes of penile SCCs based on the presence of HPV were delineated. The predominant cell composition of tumors associated

Burn scar neoplasms: a literature review and statistical analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common burn scar neoplasm, other neoplasms have also been reported. OBJECTIVE: To compile the burn scar neoplasm cases in the literature and to analyze their frequency and demographic characteristics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cases were obtained through literature searches. RESULTS: There were 412 cases gleaned from 146 articles between 1923 and 2004. Seventy-one percent (293) of the tumors were squamous cell carcinoma, 12% (48) were basal cell carcinoma (BCC), 6% (23) were melanoma, 5% (21) were sarcoma, 4% (16) were other neopla

Bromoethane, chloroethane and ethylene oxide induced uterine neoplasms in B6C3F1 mice from 2-year NTP inhalation bioassays: pathology and incidence data revisited.

Chloroethane, bromoethane and ethylene oxide represent a unique set of chemicals that induce endometrial neoplasms in the uterus of B6C3F1 mice following an inhalation route of exposure. The results of the NTP's chronic bioassays with these three compounds resulted in an unusually high incidence of uterine epithelial neoplasms in B6C3F1 mice (chloroethane 86%, bromoethane 56%) and a lower incidence for ethylene oxide (10%). The uterine neoplasms were classified as adenomas, adenocarcinomas, and squamous cell carcinomas for bromoethane, and as adenocarcinomas for both chloroethane and ethylene

Sphenoid sinus malignancies: a population-based comprehensive analysis.

BACKGROUND: Sinonasal malignancies are rare, representing less than 1% of all cancers, with the sphenoid sinus accounting for 1% to 2% of these cases. Sphenoid sinus malignancies exhibit very poor outcomes. There is a paucity of literature describing their histopathological features, incidence trends, treatment, and survival. We seek to elucidate these factors using a national population-based resource. METHODS: The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database was used to identify malignant sphenoid sinus tumors. The results were analyzed for demographics, incidence, and clinic
