The Peritoneum: What Nuclear Radiologists Need to Know.

The peritoneum is the largest and most complex serous membrane in the human body. The peritoneal membrane is composed of a layer of mesothelium supported by a thin layer of connective tissue. The peritoneum is one continuous sheet, forming two layers and a potential space between them - the peritoneal cavity- which is subdivided into multiple communicating spaces containing small amount of serous fluid that facilitates frictionless movement of mobile intraabdominal viscera. Peritoneum also contributes to fluid exchange mechanism and plays a role in immune response. The peritoneum is subject to

Fine structural comparison of Ewing's sarcoma with neuroblastoma.

Two cases of Ewing's sarcoma and two neuroblastoma, rosette forming and round cell type, were studied electron microscopically and their fine structures were compared. The neoplastic cells of Ewing's sarcoma were characterized by aggregated glycogen particles in the cytoplasm. They had pseudopod-like cytoplasmic processes having tight junctions, which never contained microtubules or mitochondria. Ewing's sarcoma cells exhibited several stages of cell maturation and some mature cells possessed a large amount of smooth and rough endoplasmic reticulum, large Golgi complexes and numerous phagosome

Bilateral adrenal abnormalities are not infrequently encountered during routine daily radiology practice. The differential diagnoses of bilateral adrenal abnormalities include neoplastic and non-neoplastic entities. The bilateral adrenal tumors include metastasis, lymphoma, neuroblastoma, pheochromocytoma, adenoma, and myelolipoma. Non-neoplastic bilateral adrenal masses include infectious processes and haematomas. There are different diffuse bilateral adrenal changes such as adrenal atrophy, adrenal enlargement, adrenal calcifications, and altered adrenal enhancement. In this pictorial review

Angiogenesis of the ovary.

We present current data pertaining to angiogenesis of the ovary throughout the follicular and luteal phases of the ovarian cycle, in various ovarian pathologic conditions and in benign and neoplastic diseases. MEDLINE, Current Contents, and Index Medicus were searched for studies published between January 1966 and October 1998. All studies that incorporated human and animal models of angiogenesis of the normal ovarian physiologic state and pathologic conditions including both benign and neoplastic ovarian diseases were reviewed. Current literature supports that angiogenesis is an important com

LncRNA PVT1-Mediated Regulation of Cardiovascular Diseases: A New Paradigm.

A notable mortality rate is related to cardiovascular disorders despite progress in therapy. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play pivotal roles in diverse biological processes, and the abnormal regulation of their downstream signals is linked to a broad range of disorders. A lncRNA, Plasmacytoma Variant Translocation 1 (PVT1), has been found to be associated with the pathogenesis of human diseases. According to recent studies, lncRNA PVT1 participates in a variety of cellular processes, including proliferation, migration, and inflammation, via molecular axes with microRNAs and their downstream

Autoradiographic demonstration of proliferating cells in cerebrospinal fluid.

The proliferative activity of cells, isolated from 82 human CSF specimens, was examined by 3H-thymidine autoradiography. High labelling indices (LI) were found in acute viral meningitis (up to 8 per cent) and radiculitis (up to 6 per cent). CSF cell proliferation was also shown in the subacute stages of viral diseases and in other inflammatory processes (LI ranging from 0.5 per cent to 3 per cent). Most of the cells labelled from these CSF specimens were large lymphocytes, "lymphoid cells" and plasmacytes. Their presence in CSF is presumed to indicate an immune reaction. By the demonstration o

Low-dose ionizing radiation decreases the frequency of neoplastic transformation to a level below the spontaneous rate in C3H 10T1/2 cells.

We have previously shown that chronic exposure of plateau-phase C3H 10 T1/2 cells to (60)Co gamma radiation at doses as low as 10 cGy protected the cells against neoplastic transformation by a subsequent large acute radiation exposure. We have also shown that this induced resistance to neoplastic transformation correlated with an increased ability to repair radiation-induced chromosome breaks. We now show that a single exposure of quiescent cells to doses as low as 0.1 cGy also reduces the risk of neoplastic transformation, from the spontaneous level to a rate three- to fourfold below that lev

Potential applications of matrix metalloproteinase inhibitors in geriatric practice.

Matrix metalloproteinases are a family of enzymes that degrade different components of extracellular matrix. They play an important role in normal physiologic processes of maintaining tissue integrity and remodeling, as in wound healing, processes of development, and regeneration. However, excessive expression of MMP has been observed in many disease states, including rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, vascular remodeling in atherosclerosis and aortic aneurysm formation, neoplastic processes, macular degeneration and many others.

Thymic lymphosarcoma of T cell lineage in a koala (Phascolarctos cinereus).

OBJECTIVE: To diagnose and characterise thymic lymphosarcoma in a koala. DESIGN: A pathological case. ANIMAL: Seven-year-old female koala. PROCEDURE: The neoplastic process was investigated macroscopically, haematologically, histologically and immunohistologically. RESULTS: The koala had difficulty swallowing because of a medial swelling in the lower neck. Biopsy of this mass and blood examination revealed lymphosarcoma with a leukaemic manifestation; necropsy and histopathological examination showed the mass to be thymus. Palatine tonsils, cervical, axillary and mesenteric lymph nodes, sp

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma of the breast.

Extranodal follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) is an extremely uncommon tumor with only a single case arising in the breast having been reported. We describe the clinico-pathological features of an additional FDCS of the lower outer quadrant of the right breast in a 40-year-old woman. The tumor showed three patterns of growth, i.e., diffuse, myxoid and fascicular. The neoplastic cells were large, polygonal, with a slightly eosinophilic cytoplasm and oval or convoluted nuclei. They were intermingled with small lymphocytes, plasma cells and a few bizarre multinucleated giant cells. In the f

The Many Faces of the Angry Peritoneum.

The peritoneum is a thin membrane that lines the abdominal cavity and covers the abdominal organs. It serves as a conduit for the spread of various pathological processes, including gas and fluid collections, inflammation, infections, and neoplastic conditions. Peritoneal carcinomatosis is the most common and well-known pathology involving the peritoneum, typically resulting from the dissemination of gastrointestinal and pelvic malignancies. However, numerous benign and malignant peritoneal diseases can mimic the imaging appearance of peritoneal carcinomatosis. The aim of this review is to rev

[Thoracic actinomycosis in the differential diagnosis of neoplasm: a propos of a case].

Actinomycosis is an infrequent infection caused by bacteria from Actinomyces genus that manifests as a chronic, suppurative and progressive disease. It's more common in men. Thoracic actinomycosis occurs in 15% of the cases, and infection of the chest wall is less frequent. The clinical presentation mimics tuberculosis or neoplastic processes. In this article we present the case of a 63 year-old man with no comorbidity, with pulmonary actinomycosis involving the chest wall mimicking a neoplastic process, basing the diagnosis on histopathologic findings.

Para-articular and intra-articular soft tissue lesions: Radiologic-pathologic correlation.

Articular masses comprise various disease entities including benign or malignant proliferative processes and other non-neoplastic processes such as infection, deposition diseases, vascular malformations, and other lesions. Many diseases that lead to intra-articular or para-articular masses have distinct imaging features, particularly on MRI. Radiologists can localize masses to the joint space by knowing the articular anatomy and can reach a suggested diagnosis by looking at precise imaging findings. In this review article, we first define the concept of articular space (intraarticular, para-ar

A Clinico-Pathologic Approach to the Differential Diagnosis of Pericardial Tumors.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Tumors of the pericardium are rare, but a wide variety of congenital, infectious, inflammatory, and neoplastic processes have been reported. Pericardial tumors can be categorized as non-neoplastic or neoplastic. Neoplastic lesions can be further divided into benign or malignant, with malignancies being either primary or secondary (metastatic). Clinical, radiographic, and pathologic features of the most common entities are discussed. RECENT FINDINGS: Metastatic neoplasms involving the heart and pericardium are far more common than primary pericardial neoplasms. Of primary pe

Neoplasms during the progression of pregnancy.

Restricting this review to dealing with pregnancy and its interaction with neoplasms limits us to the child-bearing years. Neoplasms may appear at all stages of species with true tissues and the incidence of malignancy in pregnancy is estimated to be 1:1,000. Almost 50% of these tumors are cervical cancers, followed by breast cancer, with an incidence of approximately 0.03%. The pregnant woman, in the same person, exhibits controlled growth (the pregnancy) and uncontrolled growth (the malignancy). In younger women, the neoplasms represent early stages of biological development and seem to aris

Spectrum of Xanthogranulomatous Processes in the Abdomen and Pelvis: A Pictorial Review of Infectious, Inflammatory, and Proliferative Responses.

OBJECTIVE: Xanthogranulomatous (XG) processes are rare inflammatory conditions with the characteristic pathologic feature of lipid-laden macrophages or histiocyte cells. Imaging findings are nonspecific and can simulate aggressive neoplastic processes. XG processes can be caused by infection, inflammation, histolytic process, or an inherited lysosomal disorder. XG infectious processes are mainly seen in cholecystitis and pyelonephritis, but several other organs can also be involved. Histiocytic processes can be divided into Langerhans and non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis. The non-Langerhans c

Splenic Lesions in Dogs: A Retrospective Epidemiological and Pathological Study.

Splenic neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions are frequently diagnosed in dogs and often exhibit overlapping clinical signs and gross morphological features, rendering histopathological examination essential for definitive diagnosis, therapeutic planning, and prognostic assessment. In Colombia, epidemiological data regarding these lesions remain limited, whereas international studies report considerable heterogeneity in the relative frequencies of neoplastic and non-neoplastic conditions. This study aimed to characterize the histopathological spectrum of splenic lesions in dogs and provide upd

Neoplastic trigeminal neuropathy: presentation of 7 cases.

Trigeminal neuropathy of neoplastic origin accounts for a small percentage of trigeminal neuropathies, though the prognosis may be very poor. It is important to discard neoplastic processes in patients with numbness of the trigeminal territory. We present 7 cases of trigeminal neuropathy secondary to tumors: in four cases there were antecedents of systemic neoplastic disease, while in the remaining three cases neuropathy was the first manifestation of the tumor. The lesion was located in the mandible in three cases, in the region of the skull base in one patient, and in the brainstem and brain
