[Bartter's syndrome: a case report of nephrocalcinosis].

An additional case of Bartter syndrome is reported, along with its metabolic and clinical features. Emphasis is laid on the concept that an early diagnosis may improve the clinical outcome of the disease, thanks to the prompt use of indomethacin therapy which is capable of preventing hypercalciuria and nephrocalcinosis.

Nephrocalcinosis in pseudohypoaldosteronism and the effect of indomethacin therapy.

We report four patients with pseudohypoaldosteronism, aged 5 months to 5 years. All patients had hypercalciuria and three had nephrocalcinosis. Two patients with nephrocalcinosis were treated with indomethacin. Polydipsia decreased and appetite and weight gain improved within 14 days of therapy. Hypercalciuria, polyuria, and creatinine clearance decreased 30% to 50% and urinary prostaglandin E2 levels decreased fourfold to eightfold.

Renal function in hyperparathyroidism with complicating nephrocalcinosis.

Primary hyperparathyroidism in childhood is rare. Long-standing hypercalcaemia is reported to result in severe and irreversible renal damage. However, renal complications of hyperparathyroidism, particularly nephrocalcinosis are uncommon. We report a 12-year-old girl presenting after three years with extensive nephrocalcinosis and with rapid recovery of renal function.

Medullary nephrocalcinosis: sonographic findings in adult patients.

Medullary nephrocalcinosis occurs in various diseases as a non-specific renal manifestation. We present 5 patients (hypophosphataemic rickets, type 1 renal tubular acidosis, primary hyperparathyroidism, hypercalcaemia of unclear origin, chronic renal insufficiency requiring dialysis) in whom a medullary nephrocalcinosis was demonstrated by means of sonographically detectable changes in the renal medulla region. The sonographic appearance of medullary nephrocalcinosis is characterized by detection of echo-enhanced structures in the region of the renal pyramids. The presence of a medullary nephr

Nephrocalcinosis complicating medical treatment of posthemorrhagic hydrocephalus.

Furosemide and acetazolamide are often used concurrently to treat posthemorrhagic hydrocephalus in premature infants with intraventricular hemorrhage. Eleven premature infants with posthemorrhagic hydrocephalus were monitored for the development of hypercalciuria during treatment using urine calcium/creatinine (Ca/Cr) ratios (normal: less than or equal to 0.21). Seven of 11 infants (64%) developed hypercalciuria; 5 of those 7 infants had nephrocalcinosis on renal ultrasonography. Infants who developed nephrocalcinosis had urine Ca/Cr ratios of 0.5-4.0. In all 5 infants with nephrocalcinosis, r

Symptomatic renal papillary varicosities and medullary nephrocalcinosis.

BACKGROUND: Nephrocalcinosis is often asymptomatic but can manifest with renal colic or hematuria. There is no reported association between nephrocalcinosis and renal vascular malformations, which may also be a source of hematuria. We herein present a case of a patient with hematuria related to nephrocalcinosis and renal papillary varicosities. These varicosities were diagnosed and successfully treated with flexible ureteroscopy and laser fulguration. CASE PRESENTATION: A 24-year-old female with a history of epilepsy (on zonisamide), recent uncomplicated pregnancy, and new diagnosis of nephro

Medullary nephrocalcinosis in Schimke immuno-osseous dysplasia.

Schimke immuno-osseous dysplasia (SIOD) is a rare hereditary disease characterized by skeletal dysplasia, immune deficiency and progressive renal disease. Kidney involvement mainly determines the prognosis. The most common renal pathology is focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS). Medullary nephrocalcinosis refers to the diffuse deposition of calcium salts in renal medulla and has not previously been identified in SIOD. Here we report the first case of a pediatric patient having typical features of SIOD with medullary nephrocalcinosis.

Nephrocalcinosis: unveiling renal tubulopathies in the genomic era.

INTRODUCTION: The diagnosis of nephrocalcinosis (NC) is challenging due to difficulties in radiologic detection, clinical heterogeneity, and its broad etiological spectrum that includes both genetic and non-genetic causes. This study aimed to uncover, in a pioneering manner, the distinct NC etiologies in a Brazilian cohort according to age of onset. METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional study was based on 96 medical records of outpatients (66 adults and 30 children) with NC, who had followed a comprehensive investigation. RESULTS: Distal renal tubular acidosis was the leading cause of

Bilateral nephrocalcinosis and amelogenesis imperfecta: A case report.

Amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) is a group of hereditary disorders that affect the quality and/or quantity of dental enamel. This paper describes the clinicopathological features of a patient who was born of nonconsanguineous parents and who presented with oral alterations, including yellow and misshapen teeth, intrapulpal calcifications, delayed tooth eruption, and gum enlargement. Scanning electron microscopy of the teeth revealed hypoplastic enamel, and a renal ultrasound detected bilateral nephrocalcinosis, leading to a diagnosis of AI and nephrocalcinosis syndrome. Since nephrocalcinosis is

A hypokalaemic woman with nephrocalcinosis: rebirth of old knowledge.

The coexistence of hypokalaemia and nephrocalcinosis poses a challenge in rapid diagnosis and appropriate management. We describe a 38-year-old woman who presented with thirst, intermittent carpopedal spasm, paresthaesia of both hands and progressive weakness of lower extremities for two years. She had a history of chronic hypokalaemia of unknown cause with intermittent potassium supplementation for 7-8 y and bilateral nephrocalcinosis notable for one year. She denied vomiting, diarrhoea or use of laxatives, alcohol or diuretics. Her blood pressure was normal. Laboratory investigations showed
