AIMS: Prone and supine positions for percutaneous nephrolithotomy are widely used but have their drawbacks. We report a new positioning method called "flank suspended supine position" (FSSP) for PCNL and describe our experience with PCNL in this position to evaluate its safety and efficacy.
METHODS: Retrospective study of 150 cases of renal stone patients treated with PCNL in a new position called flank suspended supine position (FSSP) from June 2009 to July 2010. All patients were treated with PCNL in FSSP under epidural anesthesia. Operation time, bleeding rate, stone free rate, and complic

In Morocco, hydatid disease is endemic and constitutes a major problem of public health. Renal echinococcal cyst ranks third after pulmonary and hepatic locations. We report a case of renal echinococcal cyst diagnosed during percutaneous nephrolithotomy which was treated endoscopically. To our knowledge, this situation has not been reported previously in the literature.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is a standard therapy for large renal stones. When combined with unilateral or bilateral ureterorenoscopy, stone-free rates may increase, but data on perioperative complications remain limited.
METHODS: We used the GeRmAn Nationwide inpatient Data (GRAND), provided by the Research Data Center of the Federal Bureau of Statistics (2005-2023). We assessed, through multiple patient-level analyses, perioperative morbidity, mortality, length of hospital stay, intensive care unit admissions, and the evolution of PCNL during the last years in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Generally, there are many methods for the treatment of urinary stones, of which percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is a minimally invasive and highly effective method, and now become the first-line management for urinary stones, especially in the cases of complex stones and staghorne calculi. Accurate assessment of stone location, stone morphology, degree of hydronephrosis as well as urinary system abnormalities is extremely important in the percutaneous nephrolithotomy strategy.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the S.T.O.N.E score as well as other factors that in

INTRODUCTION: The management of urinary tract stones, particularly de novo kidney allograft stones, presents unique challenges for kidney transplant recipients because of their prevalence and specific clinical considerations. Here, we describe a case in which percutaneous nephrolithotomy was successfully used to fragment a large kidney allograft stone ≥20 mm in size.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 57-year-old woman who underwent ureteroureterostomy post simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplantation presented with gross hematuria after 15 years. Computed tomography revealed a 23-mm stone in the transplan

This case report describes the performance of ultrasound-guided percutaneous nephrolithotomy in a 50-year-old woman who had scoliosis with kyphosis and a history of tuberculosis of the lumbar spine. The operation was performed with the patient under general anesthesia and in the prone position. Residual stones were found in the right lower kidney calyx postoperatively, resulting in a second-phase surgery using the same approach 2 weeks later. All stones were successfully removed during the second surgery. No complications occurred in either operation, and the patient recovered well. This study

We report successful percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) in an 8-week-old, 4.12 kg infant with a combined stone burden of > 2 cm in a solitary kidney. The patient was born with thoracolumbar myelomeningocele and had developed recurrent urinary tract infections. Her size precluded retrograde intrarenal surgery and shockwave lithotripsy would be unlikely to clear the stone burden. Stone analysis revealed hydroxyapatite and carbonate apatite stones, and metabolic work up revealed hypercalciuria for which chlorothiazide was started. To our knowledge, this is the youngest patient to undergo PCNL re

INTRODUCTION: Various anomalous kidneys such as horseshoe kidney, crossed ectopic kidney, simple ectopic kidney, pelvic ectopic kidney, kidney with duplex system, and malrotated kidney are frequently associated with stone disease. Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is a challenging procedure in these patients because of abnormal orientation of kidney.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Since 2005-2015, 86 patients underwent PCNL for stone removal in anomalous kidneys. Stone characteristics, type of calyceal puncture, number of punctures, need of relook procedures, mean hemoglobin drop, blood transfusion,

Renal angiomyolipomas (AML) are vascular tumors associated with a risk of spontaneous bleeding. Renal trauma may also initiate such hemorrhage. We present a case in which we initially avoided direct puncture and the possible risk of bleeding through extensive renal AMLs and then subsequently performed a direct puncture through the tumors. A 21-year-old obese male patient with tuberous sclerosis and mental retardation presented to our institution with left renal colic and was found to have a staghorn calculus. A CT scan revealed extensive bilateral renal AMLs. The patient had previously undergo

The publication of several accidents, possibly due to the reabsorption of irrigation solutions in the course of percutaneous nephrolithotomy, prompted the authors to quantify the amounts of glycine (1.50 per cent glycocol) reabsorbed in these operations, and to determine the metabolic consequences. In a prospective study of twelve patients subjected to fourteen percutaneous nephrolithotomies, the hemodilution parameters (natremia, protidemia, hematocrit and osmolality) and the amino acid content of the plasma were measured preoperatively, at operation, and immediately postoperatively. The stud

Background and objective Staghorn calculi are big, intricate kidney stones that reside in the calyceal and renal pelvis. They present serious surgical difficulties and a high risk of complications. A less invasive option to standard percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), mini-percutaneous nephrolithotomy (mini-PCNL) uses smaller tract diameters to minimize bleeding, postoperative pain, and hospitalization while preserving similar stone-free rates (SFR). However, there is still little proof of its effectiveness and safety for staghorn stones, especially in local contexts. This study aimed to asse

INTRODUCTION: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is a common procedure for kidney stone removal, involving a small incision in the back and insertion of a nephroscope to extract the stones. Recent advancements include super-mini PCNL, employing smaller instruments for less invasive access to the kidney. However, conventional PCNL often requires tract dilation, which can lead to potential complications.
CASE PRESENTATION: This case report presents the successful application of our surgical technique using the basic principles of PCNL with the aid of a pediatric trocar cystostomy and ultrasoun

The objective is to evaluate clinical indications and safety of tubeless percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) for the treatment of stones in upper urinary tract. A total of 231 subjects accepted to undergo tubeless PCNL, both micro-channel and standard operation were performed. After PCNL, renal gastrostomy tube was not placed also catheters and double-J stents were subsequently removed 3-5 and 14-28 days, respectively. Primary PCNL resulted in stone clearance of 98.27 %. There were five cases of postoperative hemorrhage with bleeding of about 500 ml, which was stopped by keeping patients in be

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Tubeless percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) has gained popularity in an attempt to decrease morbidity and accelerate discharge. Recently, ambulatory tubeless PCNL has been reported. There are no data, however, regarding readmission rates of patients who had ambulatory PCNL. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess rates of emergency department (ED) visits and readmissions postambulatory PCNL.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective chart review of all ambulatory PCNL cases at two institutions between March 2007 and December 2013 was performed. Preoperative, intrao

INTRODUCTION: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is the treatment of choice for large kidney calculi, staghorn calculi, and calculi that are multiple or resistant to shock wave lithotripsy. In many centers, PCNL is performed under general anesthesia. However, complications under spinal anesthesia can be less frequent. We evaluated the impact of spinal anesthesia on intra-operative and postoperative outcome in patients undergoing PCNL.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The intra-operative and postoperative anesthetic and surgical outcomes were evaluated in 160 consecutive patients who underwent PCNL und

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSES: In the era of extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (SWL), there are still some patients who will require percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). Our experience with this procedure is reviewed and discussed.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fifty five patients with a mean age of 7.9 years (10 months-14 years) underwent 67 PCNL procedures on 62 renal units between September 1997 and April 2001. Of the patients, 13 had previous open renal surgery, 4 had a solitary kidney, 4 were SWL failures, 2 had osteogenesis imperfecta, one had anuria secondary to bilateral calculi, 2 had poorly fu
