To characterise congenital mesoblastic nephroma (CMN), with special emphasis on polyhydramnios and the neonatal prognosis, we summarise 31 CMN patients (30 reported patients and the present patient). CMN was detected at a median of 30 weeks' gestation, and infants were delivered at a median of 34 weeks' gestation. Of 27 patients with available data, 19 (70%) had polyhydramnios, of which 8 required amnio- drainage. Women with amnio-drainage gave birth significantly earlier (30.4 weeks' gestation) than those without polyhydramnios (36.7 weeks' gestation). Thus, CMN was frequently associated with

Various fetal or placental disorders cause Ballantyne's (mirror) syndrome. For the first time, we report a maternal manifestation of Ballantyne's syndrome occurring concomitantly with the development of fetal congenital mesoblastic nephroma (CMN). In a pregnant woman with a CMN fetus, lung edema, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, and high serum human chorionic gonadotrophin level occurred, all of which characterize maternal manifestation of Ballantyne's syndrome. The fetus and placenta were devoid of 'edema', lacking 'triple edema', and thus this condition was not diagnosed as Ballantyne's syndro

BACKGROUND: Congenital mesoblastic nephromas mainly present as asymptomatic abdominal masses, but some present hematuria, hypertension or hypercalcemia. Neonatal dyspnea in an early-birth neonate due to rapid tumor growth is reported here for the first time.
CASE PRESENTATION: A renal tumor and polyhydramnios were detected by ultrasonography of a male fetus at 32 weeks and 3 days of gestation. The mother had abdominal distension due to the polyhydramnios and signs of imminent premature birth. Amniocentesis was performed and the signs of imminent preterm birth subsided, but growth of the renal

The effect of low-dose (2 Gy) radiation on ethylnitrosourea (ENU)-induced neoplasms was studied in Sprague-Dawley and Holtzman strains of rats. With a 60 mg/kg dose of ENU administered on day 1 in Sprague-Dawley rats, 18.4% of the neoplasms induced were found in the kidney. When the same dose of ENU was given on day 10, the incidence of kidney tumors fell to 2.8%. Prior (2 Gy) radiation on day 9 enhanced kidney tumor induction to 16.1%, a trend also observed in the case of ENU-induced neural tumors. In Holtzman rats, 40 mg/kg ENU induced more kidney tumors (12.5%) when given on day 4 than on d

BACKGROUND: Congenital mesoblastic nephroma represents 3-10% of all pediatric renal tumors. With the advancement of ultrasound diagnostics and magnetic resonance imaging, the diagnosis of this renal neoplasm is increasingly being established prenatally and at birth. It usually presents as a benign tumor, but it can severely affect pregnancy outcomes, contributing to perinatal morbidity and mortality. Lissencephaly belongs to a rare category of neurodevelopmental disorders marked by the absence of a substantial reduction in the typical folds and grooves in the cerebral cortex. The prognosis for

The development of malignant tumors and their abnormal vasculature can lead to severe changes in tissue perfusion. In this pilot study, we aimed to investigate changes in renal microcirculation and parenchymal abnormalities without treatment and after Vincristine treatment in a rat model of mesenchymal mesoblastic nephroma (Ne/De) tumor cell implantation of rat origin, which closely resembles Wilms' tumor. On the 1st, 4th, and 9th post-operative days, blood samples were collected to test for hematological parameters, erythrocyte deformability, and aggregation. In the Vincristine-treated group

Although congenital mesoblastic nephroma (CMN) is a rare benign congenital renal tumor, it is the most common solid renal tumor in the newborn period. The most common presentation of congenital mesoblastic nephroma is polyhydramnios, and only one case with prenatal fetal hydrops has been previously reported. Prenatal diagnosis of CMN has previously been made on the basis of the findings of sonography in the third trimester, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based diagnosis has been reported recently. Here we report a case of prenatally diagnosed classical type CMN diagnosed at 22 + 3 weeks

Here we report the first case of prenatally diagnosed fetal renal mesoblastic nephroma occurring after transfer of a cryopreserved embryo. A 37 year old woman, having immunological infertility, was treated by in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and embryo transfer. Following unsuccessful IVF using fresh embryos, the patient conceived after transfer of cryopreserved-thawed embryos. The chromosomal analysis identified a normal karyotype at 16 weeks' gestation when amniocentesis was performed. The pregnancy course was uneventful until 28 weeks' gestation when polyhydramnios associated with fetal renal t

BACKGROUND: Congenital mesoblastic nephroma is the most common renal tumor in children under the age of 6 months, comprising 3-10% of all kidney tumors in children. It is a rare and mostly benign tumor. It divides into cellular, classic, and mixed subtypes. It is typically detected in the third trimester of pregnancy using ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging. The best treatment is surgically by completely removing the tumor.
CASE PRESENTATION: We reported a case of a one-day-old female who was born at 31 weeks gestation weighing 1670 g. Preterm labor was due to polyhydramnios, whic

RATIONALE: Fetal congenital mesoblastic nephroma (CMN) is a rare renal tumor, characterized by polyhydramnios, premature birth, and neonatal hypertension. In the prenatal stage, it is particularly difficult to diagnose CMN either by ultrasonography or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Thus, CMN is frequently detected in the third trimester in the clinical scenario.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 29-year-old G2P0 pregnant woman took routine prenatal examinations in our hospital. The fetal right kidney abnormality was not observed after 2 systematical ultrasonic examinations (at 24 and 31 weeks of gestati

Morphological, cytogenetic, and biological evidence supports a relationship between congenital (infantile) fibrosarcoma (CFS) and congenital mesoblastic nephroma (CMN). These tumors have a very similar histological appearance, and they are both associated with polysomies for chromosomes 8, 11, 17, and 20. Recently, CFS was shown to contain a novel t(12; 15)(p13;q25) translocation resulting in ETV6-NTRK3 gene fusion. The aims of this study were to determine whether congenital mesoblastic nephroma contains the t(12;15)(p13;q25) translocation and ETV6-NTRK3 gene fusion and whether ETV6-NTRK3 fusi

BACKGROUND: Congenital mesoblastic nephroma (CMN) is a rare renal tumor with good prognosis in children; however, cellular CMN is a special subtype with poor prognosis. The ETV6 fusion gene has been found in some cellular CMNs, whereas CMNs with TPM3::NTRK1 fusion gene have not been reported. This study aims to share the progression and treatment of a case of CMNs with TPM3::NTRK1 fusion gene, in order to provide experience for the diagnosis and treatment of such specific diseases.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a case of CMN with TPM3::NTRK1 fusion gene and a 3-year course of disease that origi

Exposure of rat embryos to 3,3-dimethyl-1-phenyltriazene (DMPT) results in numerous malformations, but the urogenital system is not affected. In contrast, exposure of rat fetuses to DMPT has been reported to result in renal neoplasms, which were not further classified. To better understand this discrepancy in organotropism of the teratogenic and transplacental carcinogenic processes, the present study was undertaken to characterize the neoplasms induced in rat fetuses exposed to DMPT in utero. Renal neoplasms and persistent mesenchyme were observed in 19.2 and 11.5%, respectively, of the offsp

BACKGROUND: Congenital mesoblastic nephroma (CMN) is the most common renal neoplasm diagnosed in the very first months of life. Complete nephrectomy only is the gold standard treatment.
OBJECTIVES AND METHODS: This retrospective study aimed to explore the characteristics and outcome of CMN patients registered in the SIOP 93-01, SIOP WT 2001, UK-IMPORT, and AIEOP studies (1993-2019).
RESULTS: A total of 376 CMN cases were identified, with a median age at diagnosis of 28 days. Stage information was available for 337 patients: 92/337 (27.4%) were diagnosed with stage I, 177/337 (52.6%) with sta

Wilms tumor (WT) is the most prevalent pediatric renal tumor and most commonly occurs between ages 1 and 5 years. Data are lacking on children younger than 12 months with renal tumors. The cancer registry at the authors' institution was queried to identify patients 12 months and younger with renal masses. Demographics, clinical presentation, histopathology, stage, and survival outcomes were reviewed. The most common presenting symptoms included an asymptomatic abdominal mass (73%) and hematuria (9%). Histopathology revealed WT in 73% of patients, mesoblastic nephroma in 20%. Of those infants y

AIM: To evaluate whether radiologists can accurately differentiate Wilms' tumours from other paediatric abdominal masses with renal involvement using modern imaging methods alone.
METHODS: From February 1993 to June 1997, 23 patients presented to the Paediatric Oncology Service at The Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh with an intra-abdominal mass which had renal involvement. Nine patients had Wilms' tumours, 12 had neuroblastomas, one patient had xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis and there was a single case of a mesoblastic nephroma. In each case, two radiologists retrospectively r

The records of 170 patients with unilateral and 18 patients with bilateral Wilms tumor and 6 patients with congenital mesoblastic nephroma were reviewed for abnormalities of the external genitalia. There were 4 patients with cryptorchism, 1 with hypospadias, 1 with mixed gonadal dysgenesis, and 3 with male pseudohermaphroditism. Of the group, these 9 patients had earlier symptoms; 6 of them were under two years old. Five patients (27.7%) with bilateral Wilms tumors had external genital anomalies in contrast to only 4 (2.3%) of those with unilateral tumors. One of the 9 children with genital an

A variety of pediatric renal masses may be differentiated from Wilms tumor on the basis of their clinical and imaging features. Wilms tumor is distinguished by vascular invasion and displacement of structures and is bilateral in approximately 10% of cases. Nephroblastomatosis occurs most often in neonates and is characterized by multiple bilateral subcapsular masses, often associated with Wilms tumors. Renal cell carcinoma is unusual in children except in association with von Hippel-Lindau syndrome and typically occurs in the 2nd decade. Mesoblastic nephroma is the primary consideration in a n

BACKGROUND: Benign renal tumors are extremely rare and were studied here. This series also includes a renal teratoma in a horseshoe kidney, probably only the second in the pediatric literature.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective review of children with benign renal tumors operated between 2006 and 2018 at one center.
RESULTS: Twelve patients (M:F ratio 10:2), age range 3 weeks (31-week gestation) to 13 years presented with large palpable renal swelling (n = 12) and hematuria (n = 3). Computed tomography (CT) scan showed features typical of the tumor. Final histopathology (age group [mean])
