Everyday adaptation in a gilded trap: Risk-taking and resilience in Maine's lobster fishery.

Flexibility is widely regarded as an enabling factor of adaptive capacity among natural resource users. Yet, as ecological systems around the world become increasingly simplified and social environments reduce diversification options, flexibility is becoming limited. Despite this trend, efforts to study how people adapt within the confines of constrained social-ecological systems have been sparse. Here, we broaden the analysis of resilience through a study of the American lobster fishery in Maine, United States, one of the most valuable fisheries in the world. Drawing on 307,000 observations f

Histological intersex (ovotestis) in the European lobster Homarus gammarus and a commentary on its potential mechanistic basis.

This paper provides the first report of the intersex (ovotestis) condition in the European lobster Homarus gammarus. A single specimen (10% of males sampled) presenting the condition was discovered as part of routine sampling, from the Weymouth Bay region of the English Channel, UK. The lobster presented externally as a male, but upon histological examination was seen to contain an ovotestis, containing elements of both male and female gonadal tissue. Previtellogenic oocytes were present in several otherwise normal seminiferous tubules throughout the testis. The seminiferous tubules were also

The dynamics and scaling of force production during the tail-flip escape response of the California spiny lobster Panulirus interruptus.

The tail-flip escape behavior is a stereotypical motor pattern of decapod crustaceans in which swift adduction of the tail to the thorax causes the animal to rotate, move vertically into the water column and accelerate rapidly backwards. Previous predictions that a strong jet force is produced during the flip as the tail adducts to the body are not supported by our simultaneous measurements of force production (using a transducer) and the kinematics (using high-speed video) of tail-flipping by the California spiny lobster Panulirus interruptus. Maximum force production occurred when the tail w

Phase maintenance in the pyloric pattern of the lobster (Panulirus interruptus) stomatogastric ganglion.

The extent to which individual neural networks can produce phase-constant motor patterns as cycle frequency is altered has not been studied extensively. I investigated this issue in the well-defined, rhythmic pyloric neural network. When pyloric cycle frequency is altered three- to fivefold, pyloric inter-neuronal delays shift by hundreds to thousands of msec, and all pyloric pattern elements show strong phase maintenance. The experimental paradigm used is unlikely to activate exogenous inputs to the network, and these delay changes are thus likely to arise from phase-compensatory mechanisms i

Sensory input induces long-lasting changes in the output of the lobster pyloric network.

1. A long-lasting restructuring of the pyloric neural network of the lobster stomatogastric nervous system (STS) by a multisynaptic sensory afferent is described. This restructuring can be obtained either by mechanical stimulation of the pyloric region of the stomach or by brief high-frequency electrical stimulation of a nerve that innervates this region, the lateral posterolateral nerve (lpln). Electron microscopy shows that this nerve contains several thousand very small fibers (approximately 0.3 microns diam), the activation of some subset of which is responsible for the effects of lpln sti

Liquid chromatographic-atomic absorption spectrophotometric method for determination of methyl mercury in seafood: collaborative study.

A previously developed method that uses a simplified sample preparation procedure and atomic absorption detection of liquid chromatographic eluates for the determination of methyl mercury in seafood has been collaboratively studied. The unique feature of the method involves the use of a specially designed interface for the generation of mercury vapor. Methyl mercury is isolated from the blended sample by chloroform elution from a diatomaceous earth-hydrochloric acid column. The organomercury compound is then extracted into a small volume of 0.01M sodium thiosulfate solution. An aliquot of this

Central pattern generating neurons simultaneously express fast and slow rhythmic activities in the stomatogastric ganglion.

Neuronal firing patterns can contain different temporal information. It has long been known that the fast pyloric and the slower gastric motor patterns in the stomatogastric ganglion of decapod crustaceans interact. However, the bidirectional influences between the pyloric rhythm and the gastric mill rhythm have not been quantified in detail from preparations that spontaneously express both patterns in vitro. We found regular and stable spontaneous gastric and pyloric activity in 71% of preparations of the isolated stomatogastric nervous system of the lobster, Homarus americanus. The gastric [

Dynamic control of irregular bursting in an identified neuron of an oscillatory circuit.

In the oscillatory circuits known as central pattern generators (CPGs), most synaptic connections are inhibitory. We have assessed the effects of inhibitory synaptic input on the dynamic behavior of a component neuron of the pyloric CPG in the lobster stomatogastric ganglion. Experimental perturbations were applied to the single, lateral pyloric neuron (LP), and the resulting voltage time series were analyzed using an entropy measure obtained from power spectra. When isolated from phasic inhibitory input, LP generates irregular spiking-bursting activity. Each burst begins in a relatively stere

Transmitter identification of pyloric neurons: electrically coupled neurons use different transmitters.

The neurotransmitters mediating the synaptic interactions among the neurons of the pyloric system of the stomatogastric ganglion (STG) of the lobster, Panulirus interruptus, were examined using a combination of electrophysiological, pharmacological, and biochemical techniques. Iontophoretically applied L-glutamate inhibited all motor neurons of the pyloric system. This inhibitory response was blocked by low concentrations of picrotoxin but unaffected by atropine. The anterior burster (AB) interneuron, pyloric dilator (PD) motor neurons, and ventricular dilator (VD) motor neuron were depolarize

Local circuits for the generation of rhythmic motor patterns.

Experiments using a new dye-sensitized photoinactivation technique were employed to remove single identified cells in order to study the mechanism of central pattern generation in the lobster stomatogastric ganglion. The stomatogastric ganglion, containing only 30 neurons, produces two cyclic patterns, the pyloric and the gastric when completely deafferented. Both patterns were found to utilize a combination of cellular properties, synaptic properties and network interactions to generate their respective rhythms. Reciprocal inhibition, synaptically activated bursting and an endogenously bursti

Exposure to teflubenzuron negatively impacts exploratory behavior, learning and activity of juvenile European lobster (Homarus gammarus).

Infestations with salmon lice, a parasitic copepod, is a major problem in the salmon farming industry. Teflubenzuron is an in-feed pharmaceutical applied to control lice outbreaks; the standard medication is 10 mg per kg fish per day for seven days. Surveys reveal that teflubenzuron accumulates and persists in the sediment around fish farms and causes deformities and mortality in juvenile European lobster (Homarus gammarus), a species commonly found in the vicinity of salmon farms in Norway. To date, there is no information on sub-lethal effects of teflubenzuron on, for example, behavior. We c

Voltage clamp analysis of intact stomatogastric neurons.

Two-electrode voltage clamp of intact, identified pyloric neurons of the spiny lobster stomatogastric ganglion reveals two major outward currents. A rapidly inactivating, tetraethylammonium- (TEA) insensitive, 4-aminopyridine- (4AP) sensitive, outward current resembles IA of molluscan neurons; it activates rapidly on depolarizations above rest (e.g. -45 mV), delaying both the axonal-sodium and the neuropil-calcium spikes which escape voltage-clamp control. We infer that A-current is distributed both in a space clamped region (on or near the soma) and in a non-space clamped region with access t

A mechanism for production of phase shifts in a pattern generator.

During motor activity of the pyloric system of the lobster stomatogastric ganglion, there are rhythmic alternations between activity in the pyloric dilator (PD) and pyloric (PY) motor neurons. We studied the phase relations between PD motor neuron activity and PY motor neuron activity in preparations cycling at a wide range of frequencies and after altering the activity of the PD neurons. The PY neurons fall into two classes, early (PE) and late (PL) (21), distinguished by the different phases in the pyloric cycle at which they fire. The phase at which PE neurons fired and the phase at which P

Microbial succession and spoilage dynamics revealed by multi-omics in Norway lobster (Nephrops norvegicus) during ice storage.

The Norway lobster (Nephrops norvegicus) is a high-value seafood product with limited shelf-life under chilled storage. This study investigated microbial succession and spoilage dynamics during ice storage (0 °C, 16 days) using an integrated multi-omics approach combining sensory assessment (Quality Index Method), physicochemical indicators (muscle pH and K-value), culture-dependent microbiology, absolute bacterial load quantification (16S rRNA qPCR), 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and shotgun metagenomics. Quality deterioration was characterised by progressive increases in sensory scores,

Short-term exposure to hydrogen peroxide induces mortality and alters exploratory behaviour of European lobster (Homarus gammarus).

Bath treatment chemotherapeutants, used to control sea lice infestations in the salmonid aquaculture industry, are released directly into the marine environment around fish farms and pose a serious risk to non-target species, particularly crustaceans. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is the most frequently used bath treatment chemotherapeutant on Norwegian fish farms, however, limited information is available on its toxicity to European lobsters (Homarus gammarus), a commercially important species at risk of exposure due to its distribution overlapping with salmon farm locations. The aim of this study

Animal-to-animal variability in motor pattern production in adults and during growth.

Which features of network output are well preserved during growth of the nervous system and across different preparations of the same size? To address this issue, we characterized the pyloric rhythms generated by the stomatogastric nervous systems of 99 adult and 12 juvenile lobsters (Homarus americanus). Anatomical studies of single pyloric network neurons and of the whole stomatogastric ganglion (STG) showed that the STG and its neurons grow considerably from juvenile to adult. Despite these changes in size, intracellularly recorded membrane potential waveforms of pyloric network neurons and

Nonlinear behavior of sinusoidally forced pyloric pacemaker neurons.

Periodic current forcing was used to investigate the intrinsic dynamics of a small group of electrically coupled neurons in the pyloric central pattern generator (CPG) of the lobster. This group contains three neurons, namely the two pyloric dilator (PD) motoneurons and the anterior burster (AB) interneuron. Intracellular current injection, using sinusoidal waveforms of varying amplitude and frequency, was applied in three configurations of the pacemaker neurons: 1) the complete pacemaker group, 2) the two PDs without the AB, and 3) the AB neuron isolated from the PDs. Lethality of pyrethrins to larvae and postlarvae of the American lobster (Homarus americanus).

Pesticide formulations containing pyrethrins are being used to treat salmonids for infestations of the copepod parasites Lepeophtherius salmonis and Caligus elongatus (sea lice). The acute lethality of one such formulation to four larval stages of the American lobster (Homarus americanus), a species of significant economic importance in eastern Canada, was determined. The formulation tested contained 0.06% pyrethrins and 0.6% piperonyl butoxide (a synergist). Stage I larvae (48-h LC50 = 4.42 microg/liter) were significantly less sensitive than stage II, III, or IV larvae. Stage II larvae (48-h
