PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility, safety, and clinical effectiveness of ultrasound and fluoroscopy-guided percutaneous nephrostomy (PCN) placement in infants and young children.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between January 2000 and December 2015, 57 patients had a total of 66 fluoroscopically guided PCN placement procedures. There were 37 boys and 20 girls with a mean age 8.6±15.3 (SD) months (range: 1 day-75.5months). The most common underlying disease was upper-urinary-tract obstruction, including ureteropelvic-junction stenosis (27/66, 40.9%) and ureterovesical-

OBJECTIVES: Uraemia as a result of malignant ureteric obstruction is a recognised event in those with advanced malignancy, usually of pelvic origin, which, if left untreated, is quickly a terminal event. Palliative decompression of the obstructed urinary system, either by percutaneous nephrostomy (PCN), ureteric stent or a combination of both is a recognised method of improving renal function, with presumed low morbidity. The aims of the study were to assess whether PCN placement in malignant ureteric obstruction provided any additional survival benefit or patient morbidity.

Nephrostomy has been the standard method of urinary diversion when placement of ureteral stents has failed in cancer patients. We describe our early experience with an alternative method of urinary diversion, the subcutaneous urinary diversion. This extra-anatomical urinary diversion was done in 5 patients during a 15-month interval. The diversion is created using a specially designed 7F double pigtail stent. The proximal end of the stent is inserted into the renal pelvis via a percutaneous nephrostomy puncture. A subcutaneous tunnel is created from the flank to the bladder down which the dist

Sonography and percutaneous nephrostomy (PNS) were performed on 16 patients with pyonephrosis and the following results were obtained. Sonography revealed a dilated collecting system in all cases within which, however, neither debris nor gas was observed in any case, the pelvocaliceal system appeared hypoechoic in 2 cases and anechoic in 14 cases. From the clinical symptoms and the dilated collecting system demonstrated by sonography, pyonephrosis was diagnosed in 14 cases. The purulent fluid aspirated from the collecting system confirmed the diagnosis in all cases. The clinical condition was

OBJECTIVE: To identify the indications, complications, and efficacy of percutaneous nephrostomies and ureteral stents in women with gynecologic cancer.
METHODS: In a retrospective study, 40 women underwent urinary diversion with percutaneous nephrostomy and ureteral stents. Nine had ureteral stenosis on initial presentation, 18 had persistent or recurrent cancer, nine had no evidence of disease, and four had operative ureteral damage. Of the nine who were without disease, seven had a urinary conduit.
RESULTS: Thirty-five patients had ureteral stenosis, which was bilateral in 24, and five had

For patients with gynecologic cancers who present with ureteral obstruction, it is often difficult to determine whether intervention with nephrostomy tube is appropriate. This study was designed to determine if evaluation prior to percutaneous nephrostomy could accurately predict patients who would benefit from intervention. Twenty-two gynecologic cancer patients with bilateral ureteral obstruction were evaluated. Criteria contraindicating intervention included disease progression while on therapy, potentially life-threatening medical problems, Zubrod performance status greater than 2, no avai

The use of percutaneous nephrostomies (PCNs) in 1456 patients (1660 kidneys) treated with extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy (ESWL) was evaluated. In this group, 138 PCNs (130 patients) were performed in 133 kidneys. Forty-seven percent of PCNs were placed in patients with staghorn calculi; 24% were for stones in the renal pelvis, and 20% for ureteral stones. The most common indication for PCN was fever and obstruction (57%). In 15%, the indications were failure to decompress an obstructed system from a retrograde direction, clogged double-J ureteral stents, and perforation of the ureter. P

A percutaneous nephrostomy tract can serve both to decompress the renal pelvis and as a route for dissolving renal stones and assisting in basket retrieval of ureteral stones. These techniques are especially valuable in patients who are poor operative risks.

Renocolic fistula is a rare clinical entity. In the past, its incidence was high due to infection, especially tuberculosis, and renal stone complications; which gradually reduced with advancements in antimicrobial therapy and better stone management. The incidence of renocolic fistulae, specifically iatrogenic one, has re-emerged due to minimally invasive renal surgery and regular percutaneous nephrostomy placement for various reasons. We reported a case of fifty-five-years-old gentleman who presented to emergency room with left lithiasic pyonephrosis for which percutaneous nephrostomy was pla

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the impact of percutaneous nephrostomy catheter configuration on drainage flow and retention strength.
METHODS: The Cook nephrostomy 16F (symmetric balloon), Bardex Council 16F (eccentric balloon), Microvasive Flexima 14F (pigtail), and Bardex Malecot 16F (flange) nephrostomy catheters were attached to an artificial renal pelvis (12-in.-round latex balloon). The balloon was subsequently filled with either 60 mL of water or orange juice with pulp, and gravity drainage of this fluid was recorded as flow into a flowmeter. Reviews of the CT scans of percutaneous nephrostomy, lithotomy and lithotripsy disclosed 14 out of 78 cases (17.9%) with evidence of complications. Renal and perirenal hematomas were detected in five cases and the other five cases showed collections of contrast material in the retroperitoneum except for the anterior pararenal space. CT demonstrated clearly the anatomic distribution and extent of renal hemorrhage and extravasation of contrast material. Three cases of pleural effusion on CT were accompanied by blood or contrast material collections in the posterior pararenal space. No patients r

Renal colic in pregnancy poses challenges from initial imaging modality to need for urgent decompression and subsequent management. Each decision carries risks for mother and fetus. We share our multi-institutional experience with percutaneous nephrostomy tubes (PCNs) in pregnant patients with suspected renal colic. Pregnant patients with suspected renal colic initially managed with PCNs were identified at two institutions from 2011-2025. Retrospective chart review included demographics, obstetric history, imaging, radiation exposure, and other clinical outcomes. Descriptive statistics identif

Percutaneous nephrostomy has become a well-established technique for providing permanent or temporary drainage of an obstructed urinary system for decades. Although it is generally considered a safe intervention, some complications might be life threatening. Here we present a case of bilateral nephrostomy insertion due to T-cell lymphoma, that presented with signs of bowel obstruction 3 weeks after intervention. Abdominal exploration showed bowel obstruction due to invagination of bowel loop between left nephrostomy tube and abdominal wall which resolved by release of bowel loop and changing n

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of severe hemorrhagic cystitis successfully treated by bilateral percutaneous nephrostomy.
METHODS: The case of a 67-year-old female patient who had monosymptomatic gross hematuria with clots is reported.
RESULTS: Standard conservative treatments failed and the patient developed a clot-retention plugged bladder. Endoscopic evacuation and electrocoagulation of bleeding areas was unsuccessful. Due to persistent hematuria and development of renal failure and hemodynamic instability, bilateral percutaneous nephrostomy was performed. At 24 hours, hematuria ceased, pati

We report on a case of ureteral carcinoma submitted to resection by percutaneous nephrostomy. After considering the different therapeutic alternatives, we believe that the approach described herein is very interesting in well-selected cases since it is a highly conservative surgical procedure that permits followup and reoperations relatively easily.

A technique for performing antegrade pyelography during nephrotomy is described--puncture with a 21-gauge, 20-cm Cope needle, placement of a 0.018-inch SMG mandril "coat-hanger"-shaped guidewire, with the needle exchanged for a 3-French multi-sidehole dilator. Use of the 3-French dilator provides more security and less trauma to the renal pelvis; nephrotomy time is also curtailed. In 25 patients the technique was used successfully with 2 minor complications.

PURPOSE: Percutaneous nephrostomy (PCN) catheters are mainly indicated for urinary tract obstructions. Unfortunately, the rate for infection and recurrence remains elevated. Our objective was to identify the risk factors leading to recurrent PCN-related infections (PCNI) in cancer patients.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 571 patients who underwent initial PCN catheter placement at our institution. Of these, we identified patients with a definite PCNI and catheter exchange, with a minimum 30-day follow-up. We defined PCNI as presence of a urine culture positive for bacteria (≥ 104 CFU/mL
