We prospectively performed neurophysiologic studies in nine Fabry's Disease (FD) patients (8 male and 1 female) in order to describe the results of nerve conduction studies (NCS) and electromyography (EMG) and to verify whether the sympathetic skin response (SSR) is impaired in these patients. The investigation protocol included SSR, sensory and motor NCS and EMG. SSR was performed not only in FD patients, but also in 18 normal controls. All FD patients had normal nerve conduction studies and electromyography. SSR was present in all controls with a mean amplitude of 1453.6+/-682.3 microV. Howe

Electrodiagnostic procedures are routinely performed in patients with a variety of neuromuscular disorders. These studies are generally well tolerated and rarely thought to be associated with any significant side effects. However, needle electromyography is an invasive procedure and under certain situations has the potential to be associated with iatrogenic complications, including bleeding, infection, nerve injury, pneumothorax, and other local trauma. Similar complications are possible if needles are used for either stimulating or recording. In addition, like all other electrical devices and

Patients (n = 3336) who had been tested for suspected carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) were contacted by postal questionnaire and their opinions sought of the overall subjective outcome of any treatments using a five-point rating scale. Operative results were compared with preoperative nerve conduction, clinical and demographic variables, and a multiple logistic regression analysis used to identify significant prognostic factors. Among 1268 surgical procedures that were identified, the overall surgical success rate was 69%. Preoperative nerve conduction study findings, greater age, lower symptom s

Motor nerve conduction velocities was performed on 50 subjects in the pediatric age group. Thirty two patients with acute poliomyelitis and 18 controls. The MNCV was studied in the median nerve in the upper limb and the posterior tibial in the lower limb. The motor nerve conduction velocity in polio patients matched well with the controls, as well as within the accepted standards for normal. The MNCV of the median nerve ranged from 41.8 +/- 2.76 m/sec in under 1 year to 44 +/- 2.1 m/sec in 3-8 years, in polio patients, while the range in controls varied from 37 to 53 m/sec. Similarly, for the

BACKGROUND: Useless hand syndrome (UHS) refers to clumsiness of complex finger movements and loss of manual dexterity due to cervical cord lesions, often associated with multiple sclerosis (MS). This condition may represent the first demyelinating event in MS or may occur in a patient with pre-existing MS.
METHODS: We report 3 patients with UHS, 2 of whom had not been previously diagnosed with MS. The history and physical examinations, EMG/NCV studies of the arms, and radiological findings are presented.
RESULTS: Presenting symptoms in all 3 cases included paresthesia and difficulty with man

INTRODUCTION: The most common etiology of hypercapnic respiratory failure is chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, the differential diagnosis also includes neuromuscular disorders. We studied the specificity of reduced amplitude phrenic nerve compound motor action potential (CMAP) to diagnose neuromuscular disorders.
METHODS: A group of patients with advanced COPD were recruited prospectively and compared with controls. Phrenic nerve CMAPs were measured bilaterally using supraclavicular surface stimulation and bipolar recording (G1: 5 cm above the xiphoid; G2: 16 cm from G1).

Involvement of peripheral nerves in patients with leprosy results in sensory, motor and autonomic dysfunctions along with deformities and disability. Pattern of nerve involvement is different for different forms of leprosy. In this study, we evaluated and compared the nerve conduction parameters of paucibacillary leprosy with that of multibacillary leprosy. In this study, 40 consecutive patients of leprosy (19 cases of paucibacillary and 21 cases of multibacillary leprosy) were included. Nerve conduction studies were performed according to the standard procedure described in the manual of the

The aim of the study was to assess the diagnostic value of short-segment nerve conduction studies (NCS) at 2-cm intervals from 4 cm above to 4 cm below the medial epicondyle in a large group of patients with ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE). Furthermore, we wanted to compare electrodiagnostic and clinical findings. We evaluated 73 arms in 70 patients with UNE and observed the following abnormalities on short-segment NCS: focal conduction block (CB) in 1, focal CB with increased latency change in 34, and increased latency change alone in 25. Short-segment NCS had an additional localizing val

OBJECTIVE: To assess the sensitivities and specificities of velocity differences between median mixed nerve conduction across the wrist (Medmxpw) and (I) median mixed nerve conduction in the forearm (Medmxf) and (II) palm to D2 sensory conduction (MedpD2).
DESIGN AND METHODS: We prospectively studied 67 limbs of patients with clinically definite carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Medmxf and Medmxpw were performed by stimulating the median nerve at the elbow and palm respectively and recording at the proximal wrist crease. We also compared conventional median sensory (D2-wrist) and mixed (palm-wris

The occurrence of A-waves during routine F-wave studies was investigated in 556 consecutive patients referred to the Department of Clinical Neurophysiology at the University Hospital in Uppsala for various neuromuscular disorders. Altogether, 2367 nerves in the upper and lower extremities were studied. An A-wave, with a nearly constant latency and a uniform shape on consecutive stimulations, could be recorded in 184 nerves (7.8%) out of 124 patients (22.3%). More than 50% of patients with A-waves had various types of polyneuropathies. Of all patients with polyneuropathy, 65% had at least one n

The tarsal tunnel syndrome (TTS) is an entrapment of the posterior tibial nerve at the ankle, which, like carpal tunnel syndrome, improves with surgery but needs an instrumental diagnosis to exclude other diseases. This study was performed to evaluate the diagnostic value of nerve conduction tests proposed for the diagnosis of TTS. Of the 13 patients who were investigated 12 had secondary unilateral and 1 idiopathic bilateral TTS. One or more neurophysiologic parameters were abnormal in all cases. The diagnostic value of each neurophysiologic parameter was calculated by comparing conduction on

There is no nerve conduction study for the thoracodorsal nerve in the literature. A conduction study for this nerve is described. Thirty healthy adults (16 males) with a mean age of 41.5 +/- 10.6 (range, 22-63) years were studied. The thoracodorsal nerve was stimulated at axilla and Erb's point with recording over the latissimus dorsi. The latency was 1.9 +/- 0.4 (range, 1.2-2.7) ms and 3.6 +/- 0.4 (range, 2.8-4.5) ms for the axillary and Erb's stimulations, respectively. The amplitude of the compound muscle action potential was 4.1 +/- 1.8 mv on the right and 3.9 +/- 1.4 mv on the left. The c

BACKGROUND: Severe traction injury to the brachial plexus (BP) during childbirth can induce the formation of intraneural scar tissue or neuroma in continuity. This can lead to nerve entrapment and demyelination, which inhibit axonal transport to the target muscles. Secondary complications include muscle weakness, contractures, joint deformity, and altered limb growth with prolonged and persistent disability. These patients find difficulty performing activities of daily living. BP neurolysis is one of the multistage reconstructive procedures in patients with obstetric brachial plexus injury (OB

BACKGROUND: We evaluated outcome after carpal tunnel release (CTR) in patients with clinically diagnosed carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) but normal results in nerve conduction studies (NCS), and compared these results with those from a prospective group of patients with NCS-verified CTS.
METHODS: Over a 5-year period, we prospectively included 103 patients with clinical CTS. NCS were done at inclusion, with surgeon and patient being kept blind regarding the result. The patients underwent endoscopic CTR. QuickDASH and satisfaction score were recorded preoperatively and 4 months after surgery. 94

INTRODUCTION: Bifacial weakness with paresthesias is a rare subtype of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), characterized by facial diplegia in the absence of any other cranial neuropathies, limb weakness, or ataxia. Frequently, patients also complain of distal limb paresthesias before or at the time they develop facial weakness.
METHODS: We describe a man who developed post-infective isolated symmetric facial diplegia associated with distal paresthesias. Nerve conduction studies were conducted at 4 time-points over 6 months.
RESULTS: A monophasic disease course and presence of cerebrospinal fluid

The diaphragm pacing system (DPS) is a minimally invasive alternative to mechanical ventilation in patients with quadriplegia due to cervical myelopathy primarily caused by high cervical spinal cord injury. We evaluated 36 patients, 29 of whom had traumatic spinal cord injury, two who had a history of remote meningitis and demyelinating disease, and five who had cervical myelopathies of unknown etiology. Phrenic nerve conduction studies were performed with simultaneous fluoroscopic observation of diaphragm excursion to assess diaphragm viability. In the preoperative evaluation, diaphragm compo

Many Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) and Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP) patients recover well, but suffer from excessive fatigue, which may persist for years and reduce the quality of life considerably. In order to determine whether residual subclinical peripheral nerve dysfunction is a possible underlying mechanism of fatigue, we performed standardized nerve conduction (NC) studies in 16 fatigued patients, mean 6.5 years after diagnosis. Thirteen were relatively well recovered from GBS and 3 had stable CIDP. In contrast to CIDP, most NC values in GBS patients were rema
