Origins of nitric oxide synthase-containing nerve fibers in the rat basilar artery with reference to the fine structure of the nerve fibers.

The origins of nitric oxide synthase (NOS)-containing nerve fibers in the rat basilar artery were studied by a combination of Fluoro-Gold retrograde tracing and immunohistochemistry. After application of Fluoro-Gold onto the middle part of the basilar artery, the dye accumulated in the sphenopalatine, otic, trigeminal, superior cervical, nodose ganglia and in the spinal ganglia at level C2 and C3. Nerve cells with NOS-like immunoreactivity were detected in the above ganglia, except for the superior cervical ganglion. Neurons that showed both NOS-like immunoreactivity and Fluoro-Gold fluorescen

3D Printed Conductive Multiscale Nerve Guidance Conduit with Hierarchical Fibers for Peripheral Nerve Regeneration.

Nerve guidance conduits (NGCs) have become a promising alternative for peripheral nerve regeneration; however, the outcome of nerve regeneration and functional recovery is greatly affected by the physical, chemical, and electrical properties of NGCs. In this study, a conductive multiscale filled NGC (MF-NGC) consisting of electrospun poly(lactide-co-caprolactone) (PCL)/collagen nanofibers as the sheath, reduced graphene oxide /PCL microfibers as the backbone, and PCL microfibers as the internal structure for peripheral nerve regeneration is developed. The printed MF-NGCs presented good permeab

Modulation of nerve fibers in the rat thyroarytenoid muscle following recurrent laryngeal nerve injury.

CONCLUSION: Regeneration of nerve fibers in the thyroarytenoid (TA) muscle occurred actively after damage on the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) compared with the vagus nerve (VN). However, remyelination did not occur after damage on the RLN. OBJECTIVES: To determine the regeneration process of nerve fibers in the TA muscle following transection and immediate anastomosis of the RLN or VN. METHODS: Three types of animal model were prepared: an RLN anastomosis model (RLNa), a VN anastomosis model (VNa), and a peroneal nerve anastomosis model (PNa). Animals were sacrificed at five time points f

Cutaneous sensory nerve fibers are decreased in number after peripheral and central nerve damage.

Two dermatologic patients displaying peripheral and central nerve damage, respectively, are described. Cutaneous nerve fibers in both patients were studied in skin biopsy specimens taken from neuropathic areas and from the contralateral side, immunocytochemistry being applied to a pan-neuronal marker, a protein gene-product (PGP 9.5). One of the patients, suffering from compression of the ulnar nerve, had dyshidrotic eczema of the hands that was absent on areas of skin that were neuropathic. The cutaneous innervation (most of which was sensory) was reduced by 50% in the neuropathic area as com

Evaluation of the retinal nerve fiber layer.

In normal eyes, the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) is usually best visible in the inferior temporal part of the fundus, followed by the superior temporal region, the nasal superior region and the nasal inferior region. This distribution correlates with the configuration of the neuroretinal rim, the diameter of the retinal arterioles, the location of the foveola, and the lamina cribrosa morphology. With increasing age, the RNFL visibility decreases diffusely without preferring special fundus regions and without the development of localized defects. With all optic nerve diseases, the visibilit

A new assay for nerve fiber repulsion.

In inflammatory lesions, sympathetic nerve fibers get lost soon after the start of inflammation. To be able to identify and examine the factors that are responsible for this repulsion of the sympathetic nerve fibers we established an in vitro assay. Sympathetic trunk ganglia of postnatal mice were used for the outgrowth of axons. They were plated on poly-D-lysine-coated culture slides. Axons were encouraged to grow out by the addition of nerve growth factor-7S (NGF) from murine submaxillary gland. Using live imaging it was clearly shown that SEMA3F is a nerve-repellent factor. Two different ty

The nerve fiber layer in the diagnosis of glaucoma.

Serial fundus photographs of 14 eyes that eventually developed glaucomatous visual field defects and 110 slides from 76 eyes of race- and age-matched controls were reviewed in randomized masked fashion. Each eye that lost visual field demonstrated consistent abnormalities of the nerve fiber layer, beginning as early as 5 years (mean, 1 1/2 years) before it developed glaucomatous visual field defects on routine Goldmann perimetry. Preliminary estimates, based on regression analysis of this small series, suggest that half of these eyes (median) might demonstrate such reproducible abnormalities b

Immunohistochemical characterization of nerve fibers supplying canine elbow joint capsule.

INTRODUCTION: Only a few studies on the innervation of the dog's elbow joint have been described in veterinary literature. Consequently, there is a lack of information on the distribution and density of sensory nerve fibers within the dog's elbow joint capsule. In the current study, the density of nerve fibers and their functional characteristics within the dog's elbow joint capsule were determined by using immunohistochemical techniques. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study material consisted of isolated joint capsules of the right and left elbow joints of 10 dogs, was divided into four quadrants:

Characterization of vagus nerve active fibers during seizure in rats.

Objective. Epilepsy affects approximately 70 million individuals worldwide. Vagus nerve activity is known to be modulated by seizures; however, the types of fibers that are activated during seizures remain unknown. This work compares the electrical activity of the vagus nerve before, during, and after seizures in epileptic rats.Approach. Six rats experiencing pentylenetetrazol-induced epilepsy seizures and two rats under saline solution were investigated. Action potentials (AP) identified by template matching were sorted according to the fiber type they are deemed to originate from. AP templat

A Computational Model of Functionally-distinct Cervical Vagus Nerve Fibers.

Cervical vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is a neuromodulation therapy used in the treatment of several chronic disorders. In order to maximize the therapeutic effectiveness of VNS, it has become increasingly important to deliver fiber-specific neurostimulation, so that undesired effects can be minimized. Assessing the activation of different vagal fiber types through electrical stimulation is therefore essential for developing fiber-selective VNS therapies. Towards this goal, we conducted in silico investigations using a generic model of functionally distinct nerve fibers and clinically relevant

Bionic intrafascicular interfaces for recording and stimulating peripheral nerve fibers.

The network of peripheral nerves presents extraordinary potential for modulating and/or monitoring the functioning of internal organs or the brain. The degree to which these pathways can be used to influence or observe neural activity patterns will depend greatly on the quality and specificity of the bionic interface. The anatomical organization, which consists of multiple nerve fibers clustered into fascicles within a nerve bundle, presents opportunities and challenges that may necessitate insertion of electrodes into individual fascicles to achieve the specificity that may be required for ma

Sympathetic nerve fibers in human cervical and thoracic vagus nerves.

BACKGROUND: Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) therapy has been used for chronic heart failure and is believed to improve imbalance of autonomic control by increasing parasympathetic activity. Although it is known that there is neural communication between the VN and the cervical sympathetic trunk, there are few data regarding the quantity and/or distribution of the sympathetic components within the vagus nerve (VN). OBJECTIVE: To examine the sympathetic components within the human VN and correlate them with the presence of cardiac and neurologic diseases. METHODS: We performed immunohistochemist

Regression of myelinated retinal nerve fibers in a glaucomatous eye.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to present a case of a patient with primary open angle glaucoma and poorly controlled intraocular pressure, who underwent photodocumented atrophy of myelinated retinal nerve fibers. CASE REPORT: A 48-year-old woman with high myopia, refractive amblyopia, and extensive myelination of retinal nerve fibers underwent profound atrophy and regression of the myelination during an 8-year period. CONCLUSIONS: Myelinated retinal nerve fibers can atrophy and regress because of neurodegenerative conditions such as glaucoma.

Acquired myelinated nerve fibers in association with optic disk drusen.

Myelinated retinal nerve fibers are a well-recognized anomaly of the ocular fundus associated with many ocular and systemic conditions. Myelination is almost always congenital and stable, but progression has been documented in rare cases. Optic disk drusen are the result of a degenerative process at the optic nerve head and are often found incidentally on ophthalmologic examination. To our knowledge, optic disk drusen have only been reported once in association with acquired and progressive myelinated retinal nerve fibers. We present 2 such cases and consider the implications for the pathogene

Blindsight after optic nerve injury indicates functionality of spared fibers.

Some patients with lesions in the geniculostriate pathway (GSP) can respond to visual stimuli in the blind field without conscious acknowledgement. The substrate for this "blindsight" is controversial: whether it is the uninjured extrastriate pathway (EXP), which bypasses the lesion site, or residual fibers within damaged visual cortex ("islands of vision"). Using stimulus detection, localization, and spatial summation tasks, we have found blindsight in patients with damage both in the optic nerve (ON) and EXP. The prevalence and functional characteristics of their blindsight are indistinguish
