The application of techniques from network science to create single-layer networks of the brain and mind has resulted in significant advances in the neuro- (i.e., structural and functional brain networks) and cognitive sciences (i.e., cognitive network science). Recent advances in network science on multilayer networks increase the possibility that a "network of networks" might finally connect the physical brain to the intangible mind, much like physical fibre optic cables and wires connect to other layers of the internet to allow intangible social networks to form in various social media plat

Catatonia is a psychomotor syndrome associated with several psychiatric and medical conditions. Psychomotor signs range from stupor to agitation, and include pathognomonic features such as verbigeration and waxy flexibility. Disturbances of volition led to the classification of catatonia as a subtype of schizophrenia, but changes in nosology now recognise the high prevalence in mood disorders, overlap with delirium, and comorbidity with medical conditions. Initial psychometric studies have revealed three behavioural factors, but the structure of catatonia is still unknown. Evidence from brain

INTRODUCTION: In mammals, the preBötzinger complex (preBötC) is a bilateral and symmetrical neural network located in the brainstem which is essential for the generation and modulation of respiratory rhythm. There are few human studies about the preBötC and, its relationship with neurological diseases has not been described. However, the importance of the preBötC in neural control of breathing and its potential participation in neurological diseases in humans, has been suggested based on pharmacological manipulation and lesion of the preBötC in animal models, both in vivo and in vitro.

Understanding how species-typical movement patterns are organized in the nervous system is a central question in neurobiology. The current explanations involve 'alphabet' models in which an individual neuron may participate in the circuit for several behaviors but each behavior is specified by a specific neural circuit. However, not all of the well-studied model systems fit the 'alphabet' model. The 'equation' model provides an alternative possibility, whereby a system of parallel motor neurons, each with a unique (but overlapping) field of innervation, can account for the production of stereo

Schizophrenia (SZ) negative symptoms constitute a significant clinical challenge in everyday clinical practice, as most of them are persistent and unresponsive to standard psychopharmacotherapy. Recently, the role of brain network functional connectivity disturbances has been emphasized as a potential underlying mechanism for their occurrence and severity. This review aims to synthesize selected findings on altered brain network functional connectivity patterns associated with negative symptoms of SZ. Several distinctive functional dysconnectivity patterns have been identified in relation to p

Capturing how the Caenorhabditis elegans connectome structure gives rise to its neuron functionality remains unclear. It is through fiber symmetries found in its neuronal connectivity that synchronization of a group of neurons can be determined. To understand these we investigate graph symmetries and search for such in the symmetrized versions of the forward and backward locomotive sub-networks of the Caenorhabditi elegans worm neuron network. The use of ordinarily differential equations simulations admissible to these graphs are used to validate the predictions of these fiber symmetries and a

The last two decades have seen an explosion in our understanding of the clinical nature of narcolepsy and its pathogenesis, fuelling new approaches to potentially effective treatments. It is now recognised that the full narcoleptic syndrome has significant adverse effects on sleep regulation across the full 24-h period and is often associated with clinical features outside the sleep-wake domain. The discovery that most narcoleptic subjects specifically lack a hypothalamic neuropeptide (hypocretin, also called orexin) was a truly original and landmark observation in 1999, greatly furthering our

This chapter summarizes the neuropathologic features of nonneoplastic disorders of the adult cerebellum. Gait ataxia and extremity dysmetria are clinical manifestations of diseases that interrupt the complex cerebellar circuitry between the neurons of the cerebellar cortex, the cerebellar nuclei (especially the dentate nuclei), and the inferior olivary nuclei. The cerebellum is a prominent target of several sporadic and hereditary neurodegenerative diseases, including multiple system atrophy, spinocerebellar ataxia, and Friedreich ataxia. Purkinje cells display selective vulnerability to hypox

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a serious eating disorder characterized by self-starvation and extreme weight loss. Pseudoatrophic brain changes are often readily visible in individual brain scans, and AN may be a valuable model disorder to study structural neuroplasticity. Structural magnetic resonance imaging studies have found reduced gray matter volume and cortical thinning in acutely underweight patients to normalize following successful treatment. However, some well-controlled studies have found regionally greater gray matter and persistence of structural alterations following long-term recover

Neurodegeneration refers to a heterogeneous group of brain disorders that progressively evolve. It has been increasingly appreciated that many neurodegenerative conditions overlap at multiple levels and therefore traditional clinicopathological correlation approaches to better classify a disease have met with limited success. Neuronal network disintegration is fundamental to neurodegeneration, and concepts based around such a concept may better explain the overlap between their clinical and pathological phenotypes. In this Review, promoters of overlap in neurodegeneration incorporating behavio

Many candidate genes are now thought to confer susceptibility to autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Here we review four interrelated complexes, each composed of multiple families of genes that functionally coalesce on common cellular pathways. We illustrate a common thread in the organization of glutamatergic synapses and suggest a link between genes involved in Tuberous Sclerosis Complex, Fragile X syndrome, Angelman syndrome and several synaptic ASD candidate genes. When viewed in this context, progress in deciphering the molecular architecture of cellular protein-protein interactions togethe

For more than a century the research on Motor Neuron Disease (MND) has been dominated by a tension between the concept of a selective, purely motor degeneration and a growing realisation of the high frequency and importance of cognitive symptoms that can culminate in dementia. The present paper aims at integrating these two, seemingly mutually exclusive interpretations of the disease. It is proposed that the cognitive and motor symptoms in MND are due to the same selective neurodegenerative process, spreading along the lines of functional connections in the nervous system. Accordingly, the mos

Neuroglia is critically important for controlling the brain homeostasis and for mounting the brain defence against pathological insults. Here, we overview recent data about the role of neuroglia in various types of neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, fronto-temporal dementia, Wernicke encephalopathy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and immunodeficiency virus-1-associated dementia). In all these forms of neurodegeneration, astroglia undergoes complex morphological and functional changes. The early and mid-term stages of neurodegenerative processes, and specifical

PURPOSE: Glaucoma is a chronic eye disease that progressively damages the optic nerve, leading to irreversible visual field (VF) loss. OCT and VF tests are essential for monitoring structural and functional changes in glaucoma. This study applies 3 deep learning models-R2 U-Net, Dense U-Net, and Nested U-Net (UNet++)-to predict VF outcomes using retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness maps from OCT images.
DESIGN: A retrospective cross-sectional study.
SUBJECTS: A total of 1640 patients with glaucoma diagnosed at a tertiary referral center were included. Only 1 eye (left eye) per patient

The topographic anatomical study on the distribution pattern of the superior laryngeal nerve (SLN) in the larynx was studied in thirteen adult dogs. The ramus posterior of the SLN divides into two branches; the interarytenoid branch (IA) and the pharyngoesophageal branch (PE). The IA on both sides connect to the cricoid ganglion (CG) in the midline at the cranial border of the cricoid cartilage. Posterior glottic branches arise from the IA, run over the cricoid cartilage, and distribute fibers to the posterior wall of the glottis. Every specimen observed in the present study possessed the CG a

Blink reflex(BR) and electroneurography (ENoG) were carried out in 31 healthy people to obtain normal value. The manifestations of nerve excitability test(NET), ENoG and BR of 60 patients with Bell's palsy within 3 weeks of onset were studied. The results indicated that when the appearance of BR was regarded as good prognosis, facial paralysis recovered completely, the rate of accuracy of predicting facial paralysis was 100%, when the disappearance of BR was regarded as bad prognosis, it isn't a useful test for evaluating prognosis of facial paralysis within the first week of onset (for very f

Peripheral nerve tension is known to be related to the pathophysiology of neuropathy; however, assessing this tension is difficult in a clinical setting. In this study, we aimed to develop a deep learning algorithm for the automatic assessment of tibial nerve tension using B-mode ultrasound imaging. To develop the algorithm, we used 204 ultrasound images of the tibial nerve in three positions: the maximum dorsiflexion position and -10° and -20° plantar flexion from maximum dorsiflexion. The images were taken of 68 healthy volunteers who did not have any abnormalities in the lower limbs at the

Accurate segmentation of organs at risk (OARs) is necessary for adaptive head and neck (H&N) cancer treatment planning, but manual delineation is tedious, slow, and inconsistent. A self-channel-and-spatial-attention neural network (SCSA-Net) is developed for H&N OAR segmentation on CT images. To simultaneously ease the training and improve the segmentation performance, the proposed SCSA-Net utilizes the self-attention ability of the network. Spatial and channel-wise attention learning mechanisms are both employed to adaptively force the network to emphasize the meaningful features and weaken t

Vagus nerve stimulation has been shown to exert anti-inflammation activities in sepsis. However, surgical implantation of stimulation devices is performed under general anesthesia, which limits its clinical application. Auricular vagus nerve stimulation (AVNS) is a minimal invasive technique that delivers electrical currents to the auricular branch of the vagus nerve. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of AVNS on systemic inflammation, lung injury, neutrophil infiltration, and neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) formation in the lung. In a LPS challenge lung-injury mice m
