The presence of olfactory marker protein (OMP) in the olfactory tissue of rats, gerbils, and humans was demonstrated with goat antiserum to rat OMP. In control studies on rat neural tissue, OMP was found to be located in the olfactory receptor cells, nerves, and bulbs. Likewise, staining of OMP was found in the olfactory tissues of gerbils. Olfactory marker protein reactivity was also demonstrated in human olfactory receptor cells, nerves, and bulbs. The reactivity of OMP in human olfactory neurons to goat antiserum has allowed determination of the exact junction of olfactory and respiratory e

BACKGROUND: Numb chin syndrome (NCS) is a rare sensory neuropathy involving the mental nerve. Symptoms of NCS are often overlooked because of their apparent innocent nature; however, owing to the frequent association of NCS with malignancies, the opposite should be the rule. Oral health care professionals may be the first to encounter patients with NCS and should be aware of its clinical characteristics in an effort to decrease patient morbidity and mortality.
TYPES OF STUDIES REVIEWED: A search in PubMed (MEDLINE) and the Cochrane Library was performed using the terms numb chin syndrome, num

The authors suggest a new pathogenetic mechanism working in some forms of trigeminal [correction of trifacial] neuralgia. The mechanism is based on autoimmune reactions, notably, abolition of natural immunologic tolerance to normal proteins of neuronal conduction structural elements and appearance of pathological autoantibodies to them. A new pathogenetic therapy is validated: tissue treatment with preserved cadaveric femoral nerve. A therapeutic response to the above therapy may arise due to recovered immunologic tolerance to normal neuroproteins, immunomodulating action on the basic componen

Current investigations on the immunohistochemical occurrence and co-occurrence of biogenic polypeptides in the mammalian carotid body were reviewed and extended by our own recent findings. The family of chromogranins and related peptides in glomus cells appears to have a widespread interspecies distribution, whereas other peptides investigated occur in a species-specific pattern. Immunoreactivity to antisera against opioids, which derive from the proenkephalin sequence, appears to be present in glomus cells of the rabbit, cat, dog, and a shrew. Conversely, glomus cells of pig and guinea pig pr

Injuries to large peripheral nerves are often associated with tissue defects and require reconstruction using autologous nerve grafts, which have limited availability and result in donor site morbidity. Peripheral nerve-derived hydrogels could potentially supplement or even replace these grafts. In this study, three decellularization protocols based on the ionic detergents sodium dodecyl sulfate (P1) and sodium deoxycholate (P2), or the organic solvent tri-n-butyl phosphate (P3), were used to prepare hydrogels. All protocols resulted in significantly decreased amounts of genomic DNA, but the P

This study aimed to comprehensively understand the proteomic characteristics and modulation of the neural microenvironment with N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA)-induced neuronal degeneration in the retina and optic nerve at 12 h after intravitreal injection of 40 nmol NMDA. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were sacrificed at 12 h after intravitreal injection of 40 nmol NMDA. PBS-injected eyes served as controls. The key cell death-linked proteins from the retina and optic nerve tissues were assessed by a mass spectrometry-based label-free approach. In proteomics analysis, we identified 3532 proteins in ret

The development of self-healing conductive hydrogels is critical in electroactive nerve tissue engineering. Typical conductive materials such as polypyrrole (PPy) are commonly used to fabricate artificial nerve conduits. Moreover, the field of tissue engineering has advanced toward the use of products such as hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogels. Although HA-modified PPy films are prepared for various biological applications, the cell-matrix interaction mechanisms remain poorly understood; furthermore, there are no reports on HA-modified PPy-injectable self-healing hydrogels for peripheral nerve rep

Male erectile dysfunction (ED) caused by cavernous nerve injury is a common complication of pelvic surgery, radiotherapy, transurethral surgery or other operations. However, clinical treatment for iatrogenic or traumatic male ED is difficult and not satisfactory. Many studies have shown that curcumin can promote the repair and regeneration of peripheral nerves; however, whether curcumin can rescue cavernous nerve injury is unknown, and the poor bioavailability of curcumin limits its application in vivo. Hence, the study was conducted. A curved slow-release membrane was produced, and the proper

UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND/MATERIAL AND METHODS: In 59 rat mandibular glands we investigated the distribution of extracellular matrix proteins (EMP) in rat salivary gland tumors. The animals differed in age and pretreatment status (irradiation versus no irradiation). For immunohistochemical analysis we used polyclonal EMP antibodies [anti-laminin (AL), anti-fibronectin (AF), anti-collagen-III (AC-III), anti-collagen-IV (AC-IV)].
RESULTS: The antibodies identified the different structures of the extracellular matrix: components of basement membranes [(BM); laminin, collagen IV] and components of B

Epithelial membrane protein-2 (EMP2) is a member of the four transmembrane superfamily (TM4SF) and is thought to mediate trafficking of diverse proteins such as alpha6beta1 integrin and MHC class I to lipid raft microdomains. EMP2 has also recently been recognized as a putative tumor suppressor gene in certain model systems. Normally, EMP2 is expressed at discrete locations in the body including high levels in the eye, lung, heart, thyroid, and uterus. Here we examine in detail the subanatomic distribution of EMP2 in murine and human ocular tissue. We observe that EMP2 is localized to epitheli

Biomechanical properties of the cornea have recently emerged as clinically useful in risk assessment of diagnosing glaucoma and predicting disease progression. Corneal hysteresis (CH) is a dynamic tool, which measures viscoelasticity of the cornea. It represents the overall deformability of the cornea, and reduces significantly with age. Low CH has also been associated with optic nerve damage and progression of visual field loss in glaucoma. The extracellular matrix (ECM) constituents of the cornea, trabecular meshwork (TM), sclera, and lamina cribrosa (LC) are similar, as they are predominant

Cryopreservation is the primary technique for in vitro preservation of allogeneic tissue. However, its success is often hindered by factors such as low temperature, ischemia, and hypoxia. This study investigated the potential of Sini Decoction, known for its antioxidant and anti-apoptotic properties, to reduce cryopreservation-induced injury in rats' sciatic nerves. Sini Decoction was prepared according to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, and its cytotoxicity on Rsc96 cells was assessed by using the CCK-8 method. Sini Decoction at concentrations of 4, 8, and 16 mg·mL~(-1), termed as low-(SL), medium

Neublastin (NBN) is a neurotrophic growth factor that promotes the survival and regenerative properties of nociceptive neurons and has been tested in clinical trials as a treatment for neuropathic pain in individuals with sciatica and painful lumbosacral radiculopathy. Like many low molecular weight heparin binding proteins, NBN is rapidly cleared from the blood following systemic administration. To explore ADME properties of NBN in rats, we used metabolically 35S-labeled NBN following IV and SC administration quantifying counts and intact protein in kidney, liver, brain, serum, and urine at 5

Endolysosomes are dynamic organelles that undergo movement along the cytoskeleton, fusion, fission, and tubulation during their lifetime. These processes are regulated by complex molecular machineries, including the structurally related hetero-octameric complexes BLOC-1 and BORC. BLOC-1 associates with early endosomes to mediate the biogenesis of lysosome-related organelles (LROs), such as melanosomes and platelet dense bodies. Accordingly, mutations in BLOC-1 subunits cause Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome (HPS), a disorder characterized by pigmentation defects and bleeding abnormalities. In contras

Paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesia (PKD), the most common type of paroxysmal movement disorder, is characterized by sudden and brief attacks of choreoathetosis or dystonia triggered by sudden voluntary movements. PKD is mainly caused by mutations in the PRRT2 or TMEM151A gene. The exact pathophysiological mechanisms of PKD remain unclear, although the function of PRRT2 protein has been well characterized in the last decade. Based on abnormal ion channels and disturbed synaptic transmission in the absence of PRRT2, PKD may be channelopathy or synaptopathy, or both. In addition, the cerebellum is

Huntingtin is a 3144 amino acid protein defined as a scaffold protein with many intracellular locations that suggest functions in these compartments. Expansion of the CAG DNA tract in the huntingtin first exon is the cause of Huntington's disease. An important tool in understanding the biological functions of huntingtin is molecular imaging at the single-cell level by microscopy and nanoscopy. The evolution of these technologies has accelerated since the Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded in 2014 for super-resolution nanoscopy. We are in a new era of light imaging at the single-cell level, n
