Continuous but not intermittent noise has a negative impact on mating success in a marine fish with paternal care.

Anthropogenic underwater noise is a global pollutant of increasing concern but its impact on reproduction in fish is largely unknown. Hence, a better understanding of its consequences for this important link to fitness is crucial. Working in aquaria, we experimentally tested the impact of broadband noise exposure (added either continuously or intermittently), compared to a control, on the behaviour and reproductive success of the common goby (Pomatoschistus microps), a vocal fish with exclusive paternal care. Compared to the intermittent noise and control treatments, the continuous noise treat

Great spotted cuckoo nestlings have no antipredatory effect on magpie or carrion crow host nests in southern Spain.

Host defences against cuckoo parasitism and cuckoo trickeries to overcome them are a classic example of antagonistic coevolution. Recently it has been reported that this relationship may turn to be mutualistic in the case of the carrion crow (Corvus corone) and its brood parasite, the great spotted cuckoo (Clamator glandarius), given that experimentally and naturally parasitized nests were depredated at a lower rate than non-parasitized nests. This result was interpreted as a consequence of the antipredatory properties of a fetid cloacal secretion produced by cuckoo nestlings, which presumably

REVENGE OF THE TREES: ENVIRONMENTAL DETERMINANTS AND POPULATION EFFECTS OF INFECTIOUS DISEASE OUTBREAKS ON A BREEDING COLONY OF DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS (PHALACROCORAX AURITUS) OVER A PERIOD OF 21 YEARS.

During 16 of 21 consecutive annual breeding seasons, two diseases, Newcastle disease and avian cholera, killed approximately 50% of juvenile Double-crested Cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus) in a large nesting colony in Canada. From 1994 to 2014, we recorded data annually on disease occurrence, causal pathogens, species and age classes affected, total number of breeding pairs of cormorants on the colony site, and other biological parameters. A mathematical model of pathogen transmission was constructed to assess the potential importance of transmission parameters and to test a hypothesis regar

Electroacupuncture promotes myelin repair in the corpus callosum region of cerebral ischemic rats by modulating microglia activation and polarization.

BACKGROUND: Ischemic stroke can damage the cerebral white matter, resulting in myelin loss and neurological deficits. Moreover, microglial activation plays an important role in ischemic stroke; therefore, inhibiting microglial activation has become an effective therapeutic target for ischemic stroke. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the effects of electroacupuncture (EA) on microglial activation and polarization, and the role of oligodendrocyte genesis in myelin reformation after ischemic stroke. METHODS: A rat model of permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (p-MCAO) was establ

The Bengalese finch: a window on the behavioral neurobiology of birdsong syntax.

The Bengalese finch Lonchura striata var. domestica is a domesticated strain of a wild species, the white-rumped munia Lonchura striata of Southeast Asia. Bengalese finches have been domesticated in Japan for 240 years. Comparing their song syntax with that of their wild ancestors, we found that the domesticated strain has highly complex, conspicuous songs with finite-state syntax, while the wild ancestor sang very stereotyped linear songs. To examine the functional utility of the song complexity, we compared serum levels of estradiol and measured the amount of nesting materials carried into t

Palaeontology: parental care in an ornithischian dinosaur.

Crocodilians and birds show extensive parental care of their young, but whether this behaviour evolved independently in these two groups of living archosaurs is unknown - in part because features of parenting among related fossil groups such as dinosaurs are unclear. A dramatic specimen of the small ornithischian dinosaur Psittacosaurus sp. (Dalian Natural History Museum D2156) from Liaoning in China reveals a single adult clustered with 34 juveniles within an area of 0.5 square metres, providing strong evidence for post-hatching parental care in Dinosauria.

Biopesticide Exposure Increases Aggression Without Impairing Nestmate Recognition in a Social Paper Wasp.

Biopesticides have gained increased attention as sustainable substitutes for synthetic pest control products. Nonetheless, in recent years, a growing body of research has highlighted their undesired effects on non-target organisms, including sublethal impacts on social behavior. Here, we investigate the potential adverse effects of a common biopesticide, the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana, on the nestmate recognition ability of the paper wasp Polistes dominula. Nestmate recognition, based on individual cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) profiles, plays a key role in the colony integrity

Behavior of free-ranging and captive American kestrels under electromagnetic fields.

Wild birds, particularly raptors, commonly use electrical transmission structures for nesting, perching, hunting, and roosting. Consequently, birds are exposed to electromagnetic fields (EMFs). The amount of time that wild reproducing American kestrels (Falco sparverius) were exposed to EMFs was determined, and the effects of EMFs on the behavior of captive reproducing kestrels were examined. Wild kestrels were exposed to EMFs for 25% to 75% of the observed time. On a 24-h basis, estimated EMF exposure of wild kestrels ranged from 71% during courtship, to 90% during incubation, similar to that

Plastic use as nesting material can alter incubation temperature and behaviour but does not affect yellow-legged gull chicks.

Optimal incubation temperature is crucial for embryos' development and survival. With the increasing use of plastics in gulls' nests, it is essential to understand how their incorporation affects incubation temperature, parental behaviour, and hatching success. Considering this, we conducted an experiment where plastic was introduced into yellow-legged gulls (Larus michahellis) nests. The experiment comprised three groups: a control group, a group with low amount of plastic, and a third with a high amount of plastic. This design allowed us to investigate the effects of plastic on 1) the heart

Forty years of monitoring increasing sea turtle relative abundance in the Gulf of Mexico.

Longitudinal data sets for population abundance are essential for studies of imperiled organisms with long life spans or migratory movements, such as marine turtles. Population status trends are crucial for conservation managers to assess recovery effectiveness. A direct assessment of population growth is the enumeration of nesting numbers and quantifying nesting attempts (successful nests/unsuccessful attempts) and emergence success (number of hatchlings leaving the nest) because of the substantial annual variations due to nest placement, predation, and storm activity. We documented over 133,

Nesting of Morelet's crocodile, Crocodylus moreletii (Dumeril and Bibron), in Los Tuxtlas, Mexico.

We evaluated the nesting by Crocodylus moreletii in Lago de Catemaco, Veracruz, southeastern, Mexico. During the nesting and hatching seasons, we searched for nests along the northern margins of the lake and small associated streams. We investigated egg mortality by weekly monitoring each of the nests found, recording sign of predation (tracks and holes dug into the nest) and the effect of water level fluctuations. We not found differences to nest between inland or flooded zones. However, we found that egg size varied among nests. In nests built inland, predation was the major cause of egg mor

Non-maternal nest building behaviours in mice predict bilateral dorsal hippocampal lesion extent.

Lesions and pharmacological inactivation of the hippocampus have long been important tools for assessing the critical role of the hippocampus in learning and memory. Such studies often require a substantial investment of time and resources and, so, a tool for estimating lesion extent and screening animals prior to histological verification would be of considerable utility. Mice with bilateral hippocampal lesions have previously been observed to be deficient at nest building. Therefore, non-maternal nest construction was assessed as a predictor of the extent of hippocampal lesions. Mice with co

Temperature variation in nests of Paleosuchus palpebrosus (Crocodylia: Alligatoridae) near the southern edge of the species´ range, Brazil.

We monitored the temperature of seven Paleosuchus palpebrosus nests found on the banks of streams surrounding the Brazilian Pantanal, near the southern limit of the species´ distribution, between 2008 and 2013. The mean temperature of the nests between 45 and 68 days incubation, the presumed period of sex determination, varied between 26.1 and 31.5o C. Nest temperatures were 2 to 5°C higher than air temperatures, presumably due to metabolic heat of decay of material within the nests, but air temperature explained 10-50% of the variance in egg-chamber temperatures. The estimated incubation peri

Behavioral Plasticity of Dung Beetles During Reproduction Does Not Fully Rescue Offspring from Climate Warming.

Empirical studies have documented a global shift in temperature that threatens the survival of many species. Often, an animal's first response to changing environmental conditions is to alter behavioral phenotypes, such as parental care. When adaptive, behavioral plasticity of parental care can buffer offspring from changing environmental conditions to maintain fitness. However, we have limited understanding of how adult behaviors during warming impact offspring phenotypes and survival. In addition, comparatively few studies of behavioral responses to experimental warming use a repeated measur

Kentish plovers Anarhynchus alexandrinus increase parental cooperation in variable environments.

Environmental variability significantly influences parental care, likely because parental care can buffer nest survival against environmental variations, enabling those receiving greater parental care to tolerate a wider range of conditions. Under harsh conditions (e.g., high temperatures), this buffering effect may be reinforced through increased parental cooperation. Here, using data from a coastal and an inland site, we examined the effects of high ambient temperature (Ta) and wind, and their variability, on nest attendance and behavioural thermoregulation in Kentish plovers (Anarynchus ale

Bee species-specific nesting material attracts a generalist parasitoid: implications for co-occurring bees in nest box enhancements.

Artificial nests (e.g., nest boxes) for bees are increasingly being used to contribute to nesting habitat enhancement for bees that use preexisting cavities to provision brood. They usually incorporate additional nesting materials that vary by species. Cavity-nesting bees are susceptible to brood parasitoids that recognize their host(s) using visual and chemical cues. Understanding the range of cues that attract parasitoids to bee nests, including human-made analogues, is important if we wish to control parasitism and increase the potential value of artificial nests as habitat-enhancement stra

Immediate Effects of Postpartum Hypothyroidism and Long-Term Effects of Neonatal Hypothyroidism on Maternal Behavior in Rats.

Thyroid hormones are critical for brain development, and numerous studies have reported that hypothyroidism in neonatal life results in long-lasting changes in activity, cognition, and social behavior. However, most rodent developmental hypothyroidism paradigms induce hypothyroidism in the dam as well, and these enduring behavioral impacts may be partly mediated by changes in the maternal care pups receive. The goals of this study were to determine whether postpartum hypothyroidism alters maternal care and whether the maternal behavior of the pups experiencing postnatal hypothyroidism is alter

Deceptive nest defence in ground-nesting birds and the risk of intermediate strategies.

Nest predation is an important determinant of reproductive success and ground-nesting birds exhibit a variety of nest defence strategies to mitigate the risk. Many small-bodied, ground nesting birds rely on deceptive behaviours such as injury-feigning to reduce nest predation: we call this behaviour active deception. However, active deception may entail risks to adults, and passive deceptive behaviour, where individuals effectively sneak away from the nest by flushing at long distances, may be an alternative means of avoiding nest predation. We provide a simple model to demonstrate that these

Presence of Breeding Birds Improves Body Condition for a Crocodilian Nest Protector.

Ecological associations where one species enhances habitat for another nearby species (facilitations) shape fundamental community dynamics and can promote niche expansion, thereby influencing how and where species persist and coexist. For the many breeding birds facing high nest-predation pressure, enemy-free space can be gained by nesting near more formidable animals for physical protection. While the benefits to protected species seem well documented, very few studies have explored whether and how protector species are affected by nest protection associations.
