Contemporary functional neuroanatomy and pathophysiology of dystonia.

Dystonia is a disabling movement disorder characterized by abnormal postures or patterned and repetitive movements due to co-contraction of muscles in proximity to muscles desired for a certain movement. Important and well-established pathophysiological concepts are the impairment of sensorimotor integration, a loss of inhibitory control on several levels of the central nervous system and changes in synaptic plasticity. These mechanisms collectively contribute to an impairment of the gating function of the basal ganglia which results in an insufficient suppression of noisy activity and an exce

The neuroanatomy of speech sequencing at the syllable level.

Correctly ordering a sequence of speech sounds is a crucial aspect of speech production. Although studies have yielded a rich body of data on the neural substrates of visuomotor sequencing and sequence learning, research on brain regions and their functions involving speech sequence production hasn't attracted much attention until recently. Previous functional MRI studies manipulating the complexity of sequences at the phonemic, syllabic, and suprasyllabic levels have revealed a network of motor-related cortical and sub-cortical speech regions. In this study, we directly compared human brain a

The neuroanatomy of pure apraxia of speech in stroke.

The left insula or Broca's area have been proposed as the neuroanatomical correlate for apraxia of speech (AOS) based on studies of patients with both AOS and aphasia due to stroke. Studies of neurodegenerative AOS suggest the premotor area and the supplementary motor areas as the anatomical correlates. The study objective was to determine the common infarction area in patients with pure AOS due to stroke. Patients with AOS and no or equivocal aphasia due to ischemic stroke were identified through a pre-existing database. Seven subjects were identified. Five had pure AOS, and two had equivocal

Understanding the functional neuroanatomy of acquired prosopagnosia.

One of the most remarkable disorders following brain damage is prosopagnosia, the inability to recognize faces. While a number of cases of prosopagnosia have been described at the behavioral level, the functional neuroanatomy of this face recognition impairment, and thus the brain regions critically involved in normal face recognition, has never been specified in great detail. Here, we used anatomical and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to present the detailed functional neuroanatomy of a single case of acquired prosopagnosia (PS; Rossion, B., Caldara, R., Seghier, M., Schuller, A

Neuroanatomy for the dentist in the twenty-first century.

Both the anatomy and physiology parts of national boards have questions on neuroscience. Currently, there are course guidelines established for dental neuroanatomy but not for dental neuroscience. As a result, there is great variability in what and how neurosciences are taught to dental students. At first glance, it is difficult to determine where neurosciences fit in the dental curriculum. One area where there is a close tie between basic science and clinical care is the realm of pain control. Since the Institute of Medicine study recommended that basic and clinical sciences curricula provide

The neuroanatomy of the human scrotum: surgical ramifications.

OBJECTIVE: To define the scrotal nerve origin and distribution with respect to surrounding structures in male human fetuses, by using neuronal-specific markers and three-dimensional (3D) imaging techniques, as the developmental neuroanatomy of the human scrotum has not been studied in detail and an explicit description of nerve derivation and distribution in the human scrotum is germane to genital reconstructive surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixteen normal human fetal penile specimens at 17.5-38 weeks of gestation were studied. Specimens were fixed in formalin, embedded in paraffin wax, ser

Functional neuroanatomy and neuropathology of the human hypothalamus.

The human hypothalamus is involved in a wide range of functions in the developing, adult and aging subject and is responsible for a large number of symptoms of neuroendocrine, neurological and psychiatric diseases. In the present review some prominent hypothalamic nuclei are discussed in relation to normal development, sexual differentiation, aging and a number of neuropathological conditions. The suprachiasmatic nucleus, the clock of the brain, shows seasonal and circadian variations in its vasopressin neurons. During normal aging, but even more so in Alzheimer's disease, the number of these

Dryander of Marburg and the first textbook of neuroanatomy.

Born in Wetter, Germany, in 1500, Johannes Eichmann (Dryander) studied medicine and anatomy at the University of Paris from 1528 to 1534. In 1535, he was appointed professor of medicine at the University of Marburg. During the next year he held two public dissections, and in 1536 he was the author of the first text illustrating a Galenic dissection of the human brain. An expanded edition of this early book, the Anatomiae pars prior, was published in 1537. These texts represented an important transition from the dogma of medieval scholasticism to the precise observations of Vesalius. The books

A Review of Hand Neuroanatomy, Anesthesia, and Bedside Blockade.

Many hand-related pathologies can be appropriately managed at the bedside without operative escalation, thereby reducing resource allocation, healthcare costs, and exposure to general anesthesia. Plastic surgery trainees have variable experience and knowledge in managing hand pathologies outside the operating room. A comprehensive clinical reference for hand anesthesia has yet to be seen in the current plastic surgery literature. This review aims to guide the safe and effective administration of regional anesthesia in the hand and wrist for bedside procedures. This review was guided by clinica

Functional Neuroanatomy of Tics: A Brain Network Perspective.

Tourette syndrome is defined by motor and vocal tics, yet our understanding of the pathophysiology of tics remains limited. Functional MRI (fMRI) can localize brain function related to the clinical phenomenology of tics. Here, we review extant fMRI studies examining brain activity during the premonitory urge, tic release, and tic suppression. Results are placed in the context of large-scale functional networks, given recent advancements in understanding the brain's functional network organization. During tic-related phenomena, brain activity follows consistent patterns involving specific netwo

Neuroanatomy and Imaging Assessment in Traumatic Brain Injury.

Concussion is a common injury in childhood with an estimated 1.4 million children sustaining concussions annually in the United States. While many concussions occur in the sports and recreation setting, it is important to recognize that non-sports and recreation activities are also common causes of concussion in childhood. Since neurologic projections associated with the afferent and efferent visual system are widely distributed throughout the brain and thought to comprise over 50% of brain function, it is not surprising that the diffuse sear injury associated with concussion often produces vi

Chemical neuroanatomy of the substantia nigra in the ovine brain.

The substantia nigra is an integral component of the basal ganglia circuitry for limbic and motor functions. Dysfunction and degeneration of the basal ganglia are fundamental aspects of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease and Huntington's disease. With the increasing use of sheep to model neurological diseases, it is crucial to understand the anatomy and neurochemistry of these key basal ganglia nuclei in the normal sheep brain and how they compare to the human brain. Therefore, studies of the gross anatomy, cellular morphology, and neurochemical expression patterns within t

The functional neuroanatomy of emotion processing in frontotemporal dementias.

Impaired processing of emotional signals is a core feature of frontotemporal dementia syndromes, but the underlying neural mechanisms have proved challenging to characterize and measure. Progress in this field may depend on detecting functional changes in the working brain, and disentangling components of emotion processing that include sensory decoding, emotion categorization and emotional contagion. We addressed this using functional MRI of naturalistic, dynamic facial emotion processing with concurrent indices of autonomic arousal, in a cohort of patients representing all major frontotempor

Structural neuroanatomy of tinnitus and hyperacusis in semantic dementia.

INTRODUCTION: Tinnitus and hyperacusis are common symptoms of excessive auditory perception in the general population; however, their anatomical substrates and disease associations continue to be defined. PATIENTS: with semantic dementia (SemD) frequently report tinnitus and hyperacusis but the significance and basis for these symptoms have not been elucidated. METHODS: 43 patients with a diagnosis of SemD attending a specialist cognitive disorders clinic were retrospectively studied. 14 patients (32% of the cohort) reported at least moderately severe chronic auditory symptoms: seven had tin

The functional neuroanatomy of object agnosia: a case study.

Cortical reorganization of visual and object representations following neural injury was examined using fMRI and behavioral investigations. We probed the visual responsivity of the ventral visual cortex of an agnosic patient who was impaired at object recognition following a lesion to the right lateral fusiform gyrus. In both hemispheres, retinotopic mapping revealed typical topographic organization and visual activation of early visual cortex. However, visual responses, object-related, and -selective responses were reduced in regions immediately surrounding the lesion in the right hemisphere,

Neuroanatomy of cervical sympathetic trunk: a cadaveric study.

To reduce the risk of iatrogenic injury to sympathetic chain during anterior and anterolateral approaches to the cervical spine, its location has to be well defined and known by surgeons. We analyzed the course of sympathetic chain and its ganglia from C7 up to its entry into the cranial base and its relationship mainly with the longus colli (LC). Formalin fixed 20 human cadavers were dissected under operating microscope. Measurement of the dimensions of the ganglia, distance of the trunk to the LC, and the angles identifying the course of the chain were performed. Superior and inferior cervic

The detailed neuroanatomy of the human striated urethral sphincter.

OBJECTIVE: To study the nerve supply of the striated urethral sphincter. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The pelvis from six formalin-fixed male cadavers was dissected. RESULTS: Cadaveric dissection revealed that both the intrinsic and extrinsic segments of the urethral rhabdosphincter receive their innervation from sacral roots S2-S4. The nerve fibres travel to their final destination via both the pudendal nerves and the nerve branches of the sacral roots. The terminal branches of the pudendal nerve enter the sphincteric area from the perineum. They separate shortly after they cross the ischial spin
