[Research advances on mental disorders in patients with extensive burns].

Extensive burns can cause nonnegligible acute and chronic damage to central nervous system of patients. The damage of central nervous system may have a profound impact on patients, including neurobehavioral changes such as post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, and sleep disorder. These changes may persist after injury, greatly affecting patients' integration into society and return to work. This paper systematically reviewed the clinical manifestations, pathogenesis, and current intervention methods of mental disorders in patients with extensive burns, aiming to provide a basis

Carbon disulfide-induced neuropsychiatric changes in grain storage workers.

The clinical and neuropsychiatric features of seven workers from the grain storage industry are described. All were exposed to fumigants, especially carbon disulfide and malathion. Clinical manifestations included cogwheel rigidity, resting and action tremor, peripheral neuropathy, pyramidal tract signs, an EEG pattern of sleep apnea, and characteristic measurable neurobehavioral dysfunction. Similar signs and symptoms due to carbon disulfide exposure in the viscose rayon industry strongly supported the conclusion that these grain storage workers were suffering from carbon disulfide poisoning.

Schedule-induced polydipsia as a model of compulsive behavior: neuropharmacological and neuroendocrine bases.

BACKGROUND: Schedule-induced polydipsia (SIP), characterized by the development of excessive drinking under intermittent food-reinforcement schedules, has been proposed as a successful model for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), schizophrenia, and alcohol abuse. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to review the main findings and current thinking regarding the use of SIP for compulsivity assessment and evaluate its contribution to improving our knowledge of the neurobehavioral mechanisms underlying the excessive behavior manifested in SIP relevant to compulsive behavior disorders. Unusual complication of Herpes simplex encephalitis: complete Klüver-Bucy syndrome.

Klüver-Bucy syndrome is a rare neurobehavioral disorder caused by a bilateral temporal lobe lesion affecting the hippocampus and amygdala; clinically characterised by hyperorality, hypermetamorphosis, placidity, altered sexual behaviour, eating, disorders and visual impairment, agnosia and amnesia. However, the complete syndrome is rarely seen, and diagnosis does not require all the symptoms to be manifested simultaneously. We describe a patient who developed a complete Klüver-Bucy syndrome secondary to bilateral temporal involvement due to herpetic encephalitis.

Partial Kluver-Bucy syndrome secondary to tubercular meningitis.

Tubercular meningitis (TBM) is a devastating extra pulmonary manifestation of tuberculosis and demonstrates a high neurological morbidity. A rare complication of this condition is Kluver-Bucy syndrome (KBS), which is a neurobehavioral disorder characterised by hyper-sexuality, visual agnosia, bulimia, placidity, hyperorality and memory deficits caused by lesions to the amygdala. The amygdala lesions can be due to many causes, including traumatic brain injury, systemic conditions and infections such as tuberculosis. Here, we present a case of partial KBS in a patient undergoing treatment for TB

La Crosse virus encephalitis in children.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: La Crosse virus encephalitis (LACV-E) is among the most common neuroinvasive arthropod-borne viral infections of childhood in North America. Children are uniquely predisposed to symptomatic disease, whereas symptomatic adult infections remain uncommon. Infection results frequently in neurologic symptomatology including headaches, seizures, and altered mentation, often necessitating hospitalization and significant diagnostic evaluation. The purpose of this review is to provide a contemporary assessment of clinical, laboratory, and neurobehavioral outcomes of children with LAC

Rett syndrome: review and discussion of current diagnostic criteria.

Rett syndrome is a mental retardation syndrome that occurs only in females and consists of normal pre-, peri-, and neonatal growth and development. It is followed by rapid neurobehavioral deterioration in late infancy or early childhood, a developmental arrest, plateauing, and then either a course of retarded development or continued deterioration. The period of rapid neuro-behavioral deterioration manifests as a partial autistic syndrome, with loss of production and comprehension of language, hyperactivity, hyperventilation, hand-wringing, and ataxic gait. Current diagnostic criteria are disc

A role for the cerebellum in motor speech planning: evidence from foreign accent syndrome.

A 3 year follow-up study was performed in a patient with foreign accent syndrome (FAS) as the sole cognitive manifestation of a left fronto-parietal stroke. The hypothesis of involvement of the right cerebellum in this motor speech planning disorder was investigated by means of functional neuroimaging (SPECT) and neurobehavioral assessments. Based on the close parallelism between the evolution of FAS symptoms and the perfusional changes in the right cerebellum, it is argued that FAS may result from a disruption of a close functional interplay between the supra- and infratentorial speech center

Negative affectivity drivers of impulsivity in opioid use disorder.

Despite the unprecedented toll of the opioid epidemic in the United States, the neurobehavioral features of opioid use disorder remain substantially understudied. Impulsivity plays a central role in substance use disorders, but might not be as prominent in opioid addiction. Impulsivity has multiple dimensions, related to stability and change (trait versus state) and emotion (emotion-elicited versus emotion-neutral). In this Review, we suggest that trait and state impulsivity in opioid use disorder is primarily emotion-elicited and mediated by negative reinforcement mechanisms that aim to relie

Mild Behavioral Impairment: presentation of the diagnostic criteria and the Italian version of the MBI-Checklist.

Neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) are common in the prodromal stage of dementia and can precede the onset of cognitive impairment. The presence of NPS in cognitively normal patients or in patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is associated with an increased risk of progression along the neurodegenerative process. The need to identify, in the early stages of the disease, the population at risk of cognitive decline has led to the formulation of the concept of Mild Behavioral Impairment (MBI). This neurobehavioral syndrome is characterized by late-onset sustained psychiatric symptoms, in pa

Animal Models of Autistic-like Behavior in Rodents: A Scoping Review and Call for a Comprehensive Scoring System.

Appropriate animal models of human diseases are a cornerstone in the advancement of science and medicine. To create animal models of neuropsychiatric and neurobehavioral diseases such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) necessitates the development of sufficient neurobehavioral measuring tools to translate human behavior to expected measurable behavioral features in animals. If possible, the severity of the symptoms should also be assessed. Indeed, at least in rodents, adequate neurobehavioral and neurological tests have been developed. Since ASD is characterized by a number of specific behavior

Therapeutic efficacy of magnesium valproate in succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase deficiency.

Succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase deficiency (SSADHD), a disorder of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) metabolism, manifests typically as a nonprogressive neurodevelopmental disorder with cognitive deficiency, neuropsychiatric morbidity and epilepsy. Therapy targets symptomatic seizures and neurobehavioral disturbances. We report an adolescent female with SSADHD whose unresponsiveness to a broad spectrum of antiepileptics was circumvented with magnesium valproate (MgVPA). Epilepsy remains well controlled in our patient, with concomitant improvements in behavioral symptoms and an absence of adverse

Neurobehavioral outcomes in young adults with perinatally acquired HIV.

BACKGROUND: With combination antiretroviral therapy (cART), infants with perinatally acquired HIV (pHIV) are living into adolescence and adulthood. Worldwide, many have not received cART in the first years of life, and challenges of adolescence complicate transition to adulthood. Neurobehavioral outcomes in pHIV young adults (pHIVAd) are infrequently reported. OBJECTIVES: To examine neurobehavioral characteristics of pHIVAd ages 21-30 years, and to compare them with age-matched young adults infected in the second or third decade of life (HIVagematch), and older adults with similar duration HI

Kluver-Bucy syndrome -- an experience with six cases.

The Kluver-Bucy syndrome (KBS) is a neurobehavioral syndrome and can be seen in association with a variety of neurological disorders. Case records of 6 patients with KBS seen during a period of 5 years in a university hospital were reviewed. During the study period 6 patients with KBS, aged between 4 and 14 years, were seen. Hyperorality, hypersexuality, and abnormal behavior were the most common manifestations. Of the 6 patients, 5 had recurrent unprovoked seizures. The associated neurological disorders included anoxia-ischemic encephalopthy (2), herpes simplex encephalitis (1), neurocysticer

Altered EEG, disrupted hippocampal long-term potentiation and neurobehavioral deficits implicate a delirium-like state in a mouse model of sepsis.

Sepsis and systemic inflammation are often accompanied by severe encephalopathy, sleep disruption and delirium that strongly correlate with poor clinical outcomes including long-term cognitive deficits. The cardinal manifestations of delirium are fluctuating altered mental status and inattention, identified in critically ill patients by interactive bedside assessment. The lack of analogous assessments in mouse models or clear biomarkers is a challenge to preclinical studies of delirium. In this study, we utilized concurrent measures of telemetric EEG recordings and neurobehavioral tasks in mic

Int22h1/Int22h2-mediated Xq28 duplication syndrome: de novo duplications, prenatal diagnoses, and additional phenotypic features.

Int22h1/Int22h2-mediated Xq28 duplication syndrome is a relatively new X-linked intellectual disability syndrome, arising from duplications of the subregion flanked by intron 22 homologous regions 1 and 2 on the q arm of chromosome X. Its primary manifestations include variable cognitive deficits, distinct facial dysmorphia, and neurobehavioral abnormalities that mainly include hyperactivity, irritability, and autistic behavior. Affected males are hemizygous for the duplication, which explains their often more severe manifestations compared with heterozygous females. In this report, we describ

White matter dementia in CADASIL.

Cerebral white matter disorders may be associated with profound neurobehavioral dysfunction. We report a 62-year-old man who had a slowly progressive 25-year history of personality change, psychosis, mood disorder, and dementia. Neurologic examination disclosed abulia, impaired memory retrieval, and preserved language, with only minimal motor impairment. Neuropsychological testing found a sustained attention deficit, cognitive slowing, impaired learning with intact recognition, and perseveration. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain revealed extensive leukoencephalopathy. Right frontal brai

Tourette syndrome and HLA.

Five kindreds with multiple individuals manifesting Tourette syndrome (TS) or related abnormal movements were evaluated for linkage between TS and HLA-A, B, C and DR antigens. Families were selected to have a constellation of affected individuals which gave the appearance of transmission of a major susceptibility gene. All kindreds had at least two clearly affected first or second degree relatives. Although developmental neurobehavioral disorders are candidates for showing a relationship to specific tissue antigens, we found no evidence for a close linkage between a gene locus determining susc

Microbiome-driven alterations in tryptophan metabolism contribute to behavioral comorbidities in the Muc2 knockout mouse model of chronic colitis.

Globally, the incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is projected to reach 0.5% of the population by 2030, with increasing recognition of neurobehavioral comorbidities, including anxiety, depression, and cognitive dysfunction. The mechanisms underlying these comorbidities remain unclear but may involve interacting pathways, including microbial dysbiosis, inflammation and imbalanced neurometabolite production. Here, we investigated whether microbiome-associated alterations in neurometabolites are correlated with behavioral changes in a chronic colitis model. Specific pathogen-free (SPF)
