We report a case of a third ventricular neuroblastoma (neurocytoma) in a 66 year old man. A stereotactic needly biopsy was performed to obtain a tissue diagnosis and was followed by total resection. We elected not to give radiation or chemotherapy and to follow the patient closely with serial CT scans. Presently, 48 months postoperatively, the patient is free of tumor by head CT scan and able to live independently. We reviewed the literature of primary cerebral neuroblastomas/neurocytomas occurring in adults (greater than or equal to 15 years of age) and found 32 cases. Our patient is the olde

Atypical extraventricular neurocytoma (EVN) is a rare condition characterized by diffuse tumor cell hyperplasia, increased neovascularization, increased necrosis, and aggressive characteristics. A case of a 25-year old man who presented with atypical EVN in his left parietal - occipital flaps is reported. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a well-defined globular mass with heterogeneous signals in the left parietal lobe, and mild perilesional edema. After left parietal craniotomy and tumor excision, pathologic examination of the resected tissue revealed that the lesion was localized mai

Central neurocytomas (CN) are benign central nervous system (CNS) tumors of neuroglial origin that represent 0.25 to 0.5% of all intracranial tumors in adults and an even smaller proportion of pediatric CNS tumors. These tumors characteristically occur in the subependymal layer of the lateral ventricle near the foramen of Monro and appear as sharply demarcated, solitary lesions. Surgical resection is considered curative, as the reported recurrence rate is less than 5% for patients with localized disease. In this report, we describe the case of a three-year-old boy with a diffuse CN with cranio

INTRODUCTION: Central neurocytomas are rare neuroectodermal tumors believed to arise from the subependymal matrix of the lateral ventricles.
CASE REPORTS: A 26-year-old woman and a 33-year-old man each had a large, heterogeneous, contrast enhancing mass in the lateral ventricles at the foramen of Monro causing bilateral hydrocephalus. The woman died after surgery, but the man is asymptomatic after three years.
HISTOPATHOLOGY: Both tumors were composed of isomorphic rounded cells positive for synaptophysin, chromogranin and NSE, while some reacted for GFAP, vimentin and S-100 protein. Electro

A case of extraventricular neurocytoma with spontaneous intratumoral hemorrhage is reported. A 47-year-old man presented with sudden left-sided hemiparesis. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a right parietal subcortical mass with intratumoral hemorrhagic transformation and without contact to the ventricular system. After complete microsurgical removal, the tumor was histologically diagnosed as neurocytoma. Usually, the term "central neurocytoma" is restricted to neurocytic neoplasms arising within the cerebral ventricles. In the majority of the cases, these slow-growing, generally circumscri

A 22-year-old woman presented with acute onset of headache and vomiting. Computed tomography (CT) demonstrated hydrocephalus and a huge midline mass with heterogeneous density involving both lateral ventricles. A small amount of hematoma was detected at the bottom of the left trigone. On magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the mass appeared grossly isointense on T1-weighted images and slightly hyperintense on T2-weighted images with a clearly demarcated low intensity area at its center. These CT and MRI findings were suggestive of an acute hemorrhagic event within the tumor. The presence of hemo

A case is reported of intraventricular neurocytoma that had characteristic light microscopic findings of neurocytoma with prominent intracytoplasmic concentric lamellar structures mimicking myelin sheaths. On routine H&E-stained sections, this tumor showed intracytoplasmic vesicular bleb-like structures having eosinophilic cores that were consistent with ultrastructural concentric lamellar structures. Immunohistochemically, this tumor was immunoreactive for synaptophysin and neurofilament, but negative for antibody to glial fibriallary acidic protein. Electron microscopic findings fulfilled th

Eight cases of central neurocytomas were studied by immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy. Seven tumors were located in the lateral ventricles and one in the subependymal region. All but one patient had a favorable postoperative course. The tumors were composed of small uniform cells possessing amitotic round nuclei with frequent perinuclear halos, a few Homer Wright rosettes and no ganglion cells; an appearance resembling that of oligodendroglioma. Immunohistochemical studies disclosed neuron-specific enolase and Leu-7 positivity in all tumors, S-100 protein-positive cells were found i

Central neurocytoma (CN) is a well-differentiated tumor of neural cells occurring within the ventricles. It is composed of monomorphic cells with round, regular nuclei within clear cytoplasm and must be distinguished from other clear cell tumors. Immunohistochemical markers of CN that aid in diagnosis include synaptophysin and neuronal nuclear antigen. The molecular biology of these tumors is becoming increasingly elucidated, particularly with the use of microarray analyses. Several oncogenic pathways have been suggested by these studies. Although progress continues to be made, knowledge of CN

The long-term outcome of gamma knife radiosurgery (GKS) for central neurocytomas remains unclear. In the present study, we retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 7 patients with 8 central neurocytomas who underwent GKS between March 1997 and April 2007. They were 3 men and 4 women age ranging 9 to 53 years old (mean 32.5 years old). The tumor volume at the time of GKS was 0.34-6.10 cm(3) (mean 3.86 cm(3)). All patients had undergone 1 to 3 incomplete surgical resections (mean 1.75) before GKS, the surgical specimen being evaluated histologically and immunohistochemically. The follow-u

Neurocytomas gained importance since 1995, which is reflected by the increasing number of reports on this entity. This study was performed to determine the best available treatment for typical and atypical neurocytomas (MIB-1 labeling index >3%, atypical histology) in various age groups ( <or=18 years, >18 years). The data of all neurocytoma patients reported since 1982, when this entity were reviewed for age, gender, extent of resection, MIB-1 labeling index, histology, radiotherapy, and outcome of therapy. Patients were treated with complete resection alone (CTR), CTR plus radiotherapy (CTR

Central neurocytoma is a very rare brain tumour recently described. The diagnosis rests on the data provided by anatomopathological examination and immunohistochemestry. We report a retrospective study of five cases of neurocytoma diagnosed in the Pathological laboratories of Anatomy and Cytology of Habib Bourguiba and Fattouma Bourguiba Hospitals over a period of two years (1999/2000); this study was based on clinical, radiological and anatomopathological data. It was about three women and two men with an average age of 29 years (17 to 49 years) The tumor was located in the side ventricles in

Central neurocytoma (CNC) is an uncommon benign tumor of the central nervous system (CNS) occurring in adults and is more likely to be located in the region of the foramina of Monra. Few studies have described the neuroradiological features of CNC, and most are single case reports. Our aim was to analyze the clinicopathological and neuroradiological characteristics of CNC. We retrospectively studied the preoperative CT (n=2) and MRI (n=5) of three men and two women (mean age 45 years, ranging from 30 to 63 years) with pathologically proven CNC. The tumors were primarily located in the region o

We report 4 cases of central neurocytoma removed by a transfrontal approach with no recurrence after a mean follow up of 3 years. This uncommon lesion of the supratentorial ventricles (150 cases reported) occurs in young adults, and often induces intracranial hypertension secondary to an obstructive hydrocephalus. The CT scan, MRI and histopathological features are related. This neuronal origin tumor is difficult to distinguish from other intraventricular processes as oligodendroglioma or ependymoma. However, the immunopositivity for the neuronal markers as synaptophysin, calcineurin and micro

To estimate proliferating activity of central neurocytoma, we measured kinetic rate constants and glucose metabolic rate (kinetic-rCMRGI) using dynamic positron emission tomography (PET), as well as autoradiographic rCMRG1 (arg-rCMRG1), in patients with histologically verified central neurocytoma. The subject included five patients, four males and one female, aged from 23 to 53 years with a mean age of 41 years old. All tumors were located in the lateral ventricle and two extended into the third ventricle through the forearm of Monro. Tumor lesion on the PET images was determined using CT or M

Central neurocytomas are uncommon intracranial neoplasms. More than one hundred cases are documentated in the literature. In this report we describe the clinical and histopathological features in two patients with intraventricular neurocytoma. As the light microscopic features of neurocytoma resemble with that of an oligodendroglioma, it is essential to differentiate these two tumours, using either ultrastructural or immunohistochemical techniques.

Intraventricular neurocytoma is a rare clinicopathological entity that has been recently recognized. Previous reports have not described the magnetic resonance imaging findings of this tumor. This paper describes two patients with neurocytoma in which serpiginous flow voids and isointensity with cortex were distinctive features on the magnetic resonance imaging scan. Immunohistochemical studies showed reactivity for neuron-specific enolase, Leu-7, and S-100 protein.
