Early neurodevelopment in infants with deformational plagiocephaly.

The objective of this study was to characterize the early neurodevelopmental profile of Australian infants with deformational plagiocephaly (DP). Twenty-one infants with a confirmed diagnosis of DP (mean age, 7.9 months; SD, 2.0 months) were assessed on the Bayley Scales of Infant Development, Second Edition, before treatment. As a group, infants with DP showed significantly weaker motor skills compared with the normative population. Patients with DP did not significantly differ from normative population estimates with respect to cognitive abilities. Males with DP displayed significantly reduc

Epigenetic regulation in neurodevelopment and neurodegenerative diseases.

From fertilization throughout development and until death, cellular programs in individual cells are dynamically regulated to fulfill multiple functions ranging from cell lineage specification to adaptation to internal and external stimuli. Such regulation is of major importance in brain cells, because the brain continues to develop long after birth and incorporates information from the environment across life. When compromised, these regulatory mechanisms can have detrimental consequences on neurodevelopment and lead to severe brain pathologies and neurodegenerative diseases in the adult indi

Landscaping neurodevelopment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

We aim to decipher the neurodevelopmental diversity of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) using lifespan brain charts within a brainality landscape framework. It first generated age- and sex-referenced centile scores of brain morphology for 270 children with ADHD by revising the worldwide lifespan brain chart (n = 177,701) for 31,894 healthy Chinese samples, including 25,768 scans from the Chinese Brain Health Imaging Consortium (CHART) and 6126 scans from the Chinese Child Brain Development (CCBD) study. Children with ADHD were then classified using partitioning around medoids ba

Cortical neurodevelopment in pre-manifest Huntington's disease.

BACKGROUND: The expression of the HTT CAG repeat expansion mutation causes neurodegeneration in Huntington's disease (HD). OBJECTIVES: In light of the - mainly in-vitro - evidence suggesting an additional role of huntingtin in neurodevelopment we used 3T MRI to test the hypothesis that in CAG-expanded individuals without clinical signs of HD (preHD) there is evidence for neurodevelopmental abnormalities. METHODS: We specifically investigated the complexity of cortical folding, a measure of cortical neurodevelopment, employing a novel method to quantify local fractal dimension (FD) measures t

Aberrant cortical neurodevelopment in major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: There is strong neuroimaging evidence that cortical alterations represent a core pathophysiological feature of major depressive disorder (MDD). Differential contributions of cortical features of neurodevelopmental origin, which may distinctly contribute to MDD vulnerability, disease-onset, or symptom expression, are unclear at present. METHODS: We investigated distinct markers of cortical neurodevelopment, i.e. local cortical gyrification (LGI) and thickness (CT) in patients with MDD (n = 38) and healthy controls (HC, n = 22) using 3 T structural magnetic resonance imaging data an

Schizophrenia and Neurodevelopment: Insights From Connectome Perspective.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is conceptualized as a brain connectome disorder that can emerge as early as late childhood and adolescence. However, the underlying neurodevelopmental basis remains unclear. Recent interest has grown in children and adolescent patients who experience symptom onset during critical brain development periods. Inspired by advanced methodological theories and large patient cohorts, Chinese researchers have made significant original contributions to understanding altered brain connectome development in early-onset schizophrenia (EOS). STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a search o

SMAD6 Genotype Predicts Neurodevelopment in Nonsyndromic Craniosynostosis.

BACKGROUND: De novo or rare transmitted mutations in the SMAD6 gene affect 7 percent of midline nonsyndromic synostosis patients. This study aimed to determine the neurocognitive sequelae of SMAD6 synostosis. METHODS: Nonsyndromic synostosis patients 6 years or older with SMAD6 mutations and non-SMAD6 nonsyndromic synostosis controls were recruited. All patients completed a double-blinded neurodevelopmental battery (i.e., Wechsler Fundamentals, Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence, Beery-Buktenica Developmental test), and parents/guardians completed behavioral surveys (Behavior Rating I

[GABA: a functional duality? Transition during neurodevelopment].

INTRODUCTION: Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is the most important inhibitory-type neurotransmitter and its actions are mediated by ionotropic (GABA(A)) and metabotropic (GABA(B)) type receptors, which are widely distributed throughout the tissue of the central nervous system. AIM: To review the structure of GABA receptors and their involvement in physiological processes in the central nervous system. DEVELOPMENT: The study addresses the structure and diversity of the GABA receptors, especially during neurodevelopment, and reference is made to the excitatory and inhibitory nature of GABAergi

Abnormal infant neurodevelopment predicts schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to detect infants who carry a schizophrenic genotype and study the development of schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SZSD) from birth. INTRODUCTION: In the 1940s, Bender described uneven maturation in childhood schizophrenics and in 1952 found this in the infant histories of 6 schizophrenic children. METHODS: We tested a possible index for defective neural integration in infants termed "pandysmaturation" (PDM). This required retarded cranial growth plus retarded and erratic gross motor development on a single exam. Twelve offspring of hospitalized schizoph

Rett syndrome in Sweden. Neurodevelopment--disability--pathophysiology.

Rett syndrome (RS), a complex and severely disabling neuromotor disorder affecting young girls, was not internationally recognized until in the middle eighties. In Austria and Sweden only, there are clinical experiences since the sixties. The aims of this study were to 1) define the nucleus group of RS in Sweden, 2) develop a frame of defined stages for describing the clinical progress of disease, 3) identify early developmental patterns and their predictivity, 4) give the natural history of neuromotor impairments and disability in adults, 5) analyse the period of clinical regression as to dev

The role of inflammation in neurodevelopment and childhood psychiatric disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review examines how prenatal inflammation may contribute to psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders, with a focus on maternal immune activation, microglial programming, and epigenetic mechanisms. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies have found that inflammation during pregnancy is associated with changes in brain development and neurodevelopmental outcomes in children. Animal research indicates that maternal immune activation can cause long-lasting changes in gene expression, neural circuitry, and microglial activity. Two-hit models suggest that prenatal inflammation m

Effects of Prenatal Opioid Exposure on the Brain and Neurodevelopment.

The literature suggests that prenatal opioid exposure is associated with smaller brain volumes, differences in brain structural and functional connectivity, lower scores in most developmental domains, and more problems with behavior and vision. However, it is unclear whether these relationships are causal, given the complexities of other exposures and environmental factors that contribute to brain development. In addition, in studies using standardized measures, the means of the exposed children are still within the normal range, although lower than unexposed children.

Neurodevelopment of children born with gastroschisis: a scoping review.

The neurodevelopment of children with gastroschisis may be affected by intrinsic (exposure of the abdominal viscera to the amniotic fluid, causing an inflammatory reaction) and extrinsic (pain, mobility restriction, hospitalization) factors. Thus, the objective of this study was to analyze the information available in the literature on the neurodevelopment of children born with this pathology. A scoping review was done, considering as outcomes the neurodevelopment in the motor, cognitive and language domains. A search was performed in the main databases using the term "gastroschisis", associat

Association between parabens exposure and neurodevelopment in children.

OBJECTIVE: Parabens are a group of substances commonly employed as antimicrobial preservatives. The effect of parabens on the development of neurotoxicity in children is still controversial. This study aimed to explore the associations between parabens exposure and children's neurodevelopmental performance, emphasizing potential sex differences and the combined effects of parabens. METHODS: We used the long-term follow-up study of Taiwanese generation, Taiwan Birth Panel Study II (TBPS II). We recruited the group of children at 6-8 years old. And, we measured parabens in children urine, inclu

Transitional Neonatal Hypoglycemia and Adverse Neurodevelopment in Midchildhood.

IMPORTANCE: The circumstances under which neonatal hypoglycemia leads to brain damage remain unclear due to a lack of long-term data on the neurodevelopment of affected children. As a result, diagnostic strategies and treatment recommendations are inconsistent. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether the occurrence of severe transitional neonatal hypoglycemia (defined as having at least 1 blood glucose measurement of 30 mg/dL or below) is associated with adverse neurodevelopment in midchildhood. Association of Breastfeeding and Neonatal Jaundice With Infant Neurodevelopment.

INTRODUCTION: Exclusive breastfeeding is advantageous for infant neurodevelopment. Nevertheless, insufficient human milk supply in exclusively breastfed infants may elevate the risk of neonatal jaundice, which can potentially result in neurological harm. Whether mothers should adhere to exclusive breastfeeding in infants with neonatal jaundice remains unclear. METHODS: Data comes from the Jiangsu Birth Cohort (JBC), a prospective and longitudinal birth cohort study in China. A total of 2,577 infants born from November 2017 to March 2021 were included in the analysis. Multivariate linear regre
