A deep penetrating facial congenital melanocytic tumor with bone involvement and ipsilateral eye blindness.

Bone involvement has been described in tumors with melanocytic differentiation such as melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy, and very rarely in cellular blue nevi and neurocristic cutaneous hamartoma. We present an unusual case of facial congenital melanocytic tumor that involved the underlying bones and maxillary sinus and led to unilateral blindness. A newborn with a large red bluish patch with peripheral brown and black macules overlying marked swelling on the left side of his face was presented. The tumor was shown by magnetic resonance imaging, scintigraphy, and histopathology to in

An unusual tumour causing neonatal respiratory distress.

PROBLEM: We present the case of a term neonate referred shortly after birth because of breathing and feeding difficulties. METHODOLOGY: Fiber-endoscopic examination of the nasal cavity showed a pendulating mass in the nasopharynx. RESULTS: A complete surgical resection was performed and the baby recovered completely. Microscopic examination of the mass showed an overlying non-keratinized squamous cell lining with an atypical cell population in some fragments. Histological features were compatible with a high-grade epithelial tumour like a midline carcinoma, but a final diagnosis of a salivar

Melanotic ganglioglioma of the pineal region.

A melanotic ganglioglioma was biopsied in the pineal region of a 12-month-old girl who preoperatively underwent a ventriculo-peritoneal shunt for hydrocephalus and postoperatively received radiotherapy. The tumor was subtotally excised when the girl was 7 years and 4 months of age. Histologically, it demonstrated mature neurons in disorganized clusters and in well-differentiated cerebrum-like tissue, rare binucleated neurons, glia similar to normal gray matter, and bands of fibrous tissue containing heavily pigmented cells. Ultrastructurally, melanosomes of stages I to IV were identified in th

Primary leptomeningeal primitive neuroectodermal tumor: A difficult entity to diagnose.

A 25-year-old male presented with difficulty in walking, loss of vision, and seizures. A clinical possibility of craniospinal meningeal pathology was considered. On computed tomography (CT) scan and magnetic resonance imaging, there was an enhancement of leptomeninges with few ring-enhancing lesions in both frontal lobes and right frontoparietal region. He was evaluated for low backache and occipital headache 2½ years earlier and was found to have communicating hydrocephalus on CT scan. He underwent ventriculoperitoneal shunt and was followed up with CT scans. Meningeal biopsy was done in the

Review of pineal anlage tumor with divergent histology.

Pineal anlage tumor is an extremely rare tumor that is not listed in the 2000 World Health Organization Classification of nervous system tumors. It has been defined as a primary pineal tumor with both neuroepithelial and ectomesenchymal differentiation and without endodermal differentiation. We review the literature on this tumor, including the clinical presentation, gross pathology, histopathology, immunohistochemistry, differential diagnosis, and prognosis.

High-grade Undifferentiated Malignant Neoplasm of the Oral Cavity in a Human Immunodeficiency Virus-positive Patient: A Case Report with Review on Immunohistochemistry Panel.

The term "undifferentiated tumor" describes a diverse collection of neoplasms that, when viewed under standard light microscopy, show little to no signs of cellular differentiation. It represents either a metastasis of unknown origin or a primary neoplasia without an obvious cell line of differentiation. Undifferentiated malignant neoplasm of oral cavity is a rare entity with a very poor prognosis. This report presents the case of a 40-year-old human immunodeficiency virus-positive male with a painless, gradually enlarging mass in the left upper posterior teeth region. Histopathology revealed

Diagnostic Utility of PRAME in Rare Melanoma Mimics: A Comparative Analysis Including GNET, MMNST, Epithelioid MPNST, and MITF-Rearranged Melanocytic Tumors.

BACKGROUND: Differentiating metastatic melanoma from histologic mimics such as malignant gastrointestinal neuroectodermal tumor (GNET), malignant melanotic nerve sheath tumor (MMNST), and epithelioid malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (EMPNST) poses significant diagnostic challenges due to overlapping morphology and immunophenotypes. PRAME is a novel immunohistochemical marker increasingly used to distinguish melanoma from its mimics, but remains underexplored in these rare tumor types. METHODS: PRAME immunohistochemistry was performed on four GNETs, seven MMNSTs, 10 EMPNSTs, 16 metastat

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumour of the pineal region.

We describe CT and MR findings in a 23-month-old infant with a melanotic neuroectodermal tumour of the pineal gland. The tumour has been stereotactically biopsied and surgically resected. The pathological diagnosis was made on the resected piece. Embryology of the pineal gland and the histology of melanotic neuroectodermal tumour of infancy are discussed.

Appendageal tumors and tumor-like lesions of the testis and paratestis: a 32-year experience at a single institution.

The testicular hilum and paratestis contain several embryologically diverse anatomic structures, including the spermatic cord, tunica vaginalis, epididymis, rete testis, and several other embryonic remnants. Several benign and malignant lesions arise from these morphologically distinct structures, and owing to their proximity, it is challenging to classify and subsequently stage these tumors. Herein, we conducted a retrospective review of the paratesticular appendageal and rete testis tumors and tumor-like lesions diagnosed at our department from 1985 to 2016. Soft-tissue lesions/tumors were e

Miscellaneous rare paratesticular tumors.

A few uncommon but distinctive tumors may preferentially involve the paratestis. The 3 unusual tumors that represent the focus of this discussion are the ovarian-type epithelial tumors (OTET), the desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT), and the melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI). The OTETs are testicular homologues of their more common namesake counterparts that arise in the ovary. Most frequent of these are serous tumors of borderline malignancy, with fewer cases of serous carcinomas or other forms of mullerian differentiation. DSRCT is an increasingly recognized, aggressi

Difficult Nasal Intubation Using Airway Scope® for a Child With Large Tumor.

We report a case of difficult nasal intubation utilizing a Pentax-Airway scope® AWS-100. A 4-month-old female with a rapidly growing melanotic neuroectodermal tumor was scheduled for resection under general anesthesia. The tumor was a large rubbery mass located in the middle of the mandible. For nasal intubation using the AWS, guidance of the tube toward the glottis was attempted using pediatric Magill forceps. Although we could hold the tube with the Magill forceps, it was difficult to insert the tube into the trachea due to the limited space in her hypopharynx. We then used a standard laryng

Salivary gland anlage tumor in a neonate presenting with respiratory distress: radiographic and pathologic correlation.

We present a case of congenital salivary gland anlage tumor (SGAT) of the nasal septum in a 2-week-old infant who had difficulty breathing through her nose since birth. CT and MR imaging demonstrated a circumscribed mass within the nasal cavity that did not communicate with the intracranial compartment. Differential diagnosis and clinical significance of recognizing this rare lesion are reviewed.

Lesions of the jaws.

The jaws differ in various aspects from all other bones in the skeleton. Embryologically, they are for the major part derived from migrating cells of the cranial neural crest, the so-called ectomesenchyme, and not merely from mesoderm, and they contain teeth. This latter point, especially, results in the presence of lesions that are not found in other bones, a broad variety of odontogenic cysts and tumours. They will be the major topic of this review. Other lesions, not strictly odontogenic but also mainly confined to the jaw bones, are giant cell lesions, fibro-osseous lesions, and the melano

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumour of infancy in the maxilla: a case report.

A 4.5-month-old Chinese boy presented with a bulging mass in the anterior right maxillary region. Clinical features and incisional biopsy examination confirmed the diagnosis of melanotic neuroectodermal tumour of infancy (MNTI). The lesion had first been noted a month before the biopsy. The extent of the lesion was defined via computed tomography, and surgical excision was accomplished through a partial maxillectomy under general anaesthesia. The patient has been irregularly followed-up over the past 8 years, and no evidence of recurrence has been found, either by clinical examination or seria

Early outcome of three cases of melanotic neuroectodermal tumour of infancy.

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumour of infancy (MNTI)/progonoma is a rare lesion affecting infants. Although it is slow growing and appears benign, it may have malignant potential. Evidently, surgery is the main stay of treatment and close follow-up is recommended for all cases. The literature shows that radiotherapy and chemotherapy may be indicated especially in cases where total surgical extirpation is equivocal. This article contributes three more cases of MNTI surgically managed at our institution.

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumour of infancy: report of two cases and review of the literature.

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumour of infancy (MNTI) is an uncommon tumour affecting predominantly the craniofacial bones of the newborn infants. The neural crest origin of the tumour has been confirmed. MNTI is generally accepted as a benign tumour despite of its rapid and locally infiltrative growth. Recurrence rate varies between 10% and 60%, and malignant behaviour has been reported in 6.5% of MNTIs. Systematic review of the literature revealed 445 MNTIs published between 1918 and 2010. We present additional two cases of MNTI from our Department, typical in all terms, which equals a total nu
