Experimental study on neuroendocrinological and immunological characteristics of the military-trained artillerymen.

BACKGROUND: Over one million soldiers were treated for battle- or training-fatigue during World War II. Of all ground combat troops, 37% were discharged for psychiatric reasons due to fatigue. The neuroendocrinological and immunological systems played important roles in the work-related fatigue of military personnel. The aim of this study was to investigate the characteristics of fatigue associated with military operations, and we observed changes in the regulatory functions of the neuroendocrinological and immunological systems that may provide theoretical support for improving the combat eff

Psychoimmuno-neuroendocrinology: An integrative approach to modern philosophy in medicine and psychology.

The immune system is now seen to be closely integrated with other physiological circuits, such as the central nervous system (CNS) and the neuroendocrine system. There is also an increasing amount of evidence that this integrated circuit is bidirectional and both systems exert a reciprocal effect on each other. We have always stressed the interdisciplinary nature of the science where disciplines and sciences such as medicine, biochemistry, genetics, psychology, human ethology, etc. meet and undergo a process of "cross-fertilization." We also have stressed the indivisibility of the somatic and

Deconstructing sex: Strategies for undoing binary thinking in neuroendocrinology and behavior.

The scientific community widely recognizes that "sex" is a complex category composed of multiple physiologies. Yet in practice, basic scientific research often treats "sex" as a single, internally consistent, and often binary variable. This practice occludes important physiological factors and processes, and thus limits the scientific value of our findings. In human-oriented biomedical research, the use of simplistic (and often binary) models of sex ignores the existence of intersex, trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming people and contributes to a medical paradigm that neglects their n

Effects of early life social stress on maternal behavior and neuroendocrinology.

Maternal mood disorders such as depression and chronic anxiety can negatively affect the lives of both mothers and their adult offspring. An active focus of maternal depression and anxiety research has been the role of chronic social stress in the development of these disorders. Chronic exposure to social stress is common in humans, especially in lactating mothers, and postpartum mood disorders have been correlated with high levels of social conflict and low levels of social support. Recent studies have described an effective and ethologically relevant chronic social stress (CSS) based rodent

60 YEARS OF NEUROENDOCRINOLOGY: The hypothalamo-GH axis: the past 60 years.

At the time of the publication of Geoffrey Harris's monograph on 'Neural control of the pituitary gland' 60 years ago, the pituitary was recognised to produce a growth factor, and extracts administered to children with hypopituitarism could accelerate growth. Since then our understanding of the neuroendocrinology of the GH axis has included identification of the key central components of the GH axis: GH-releasing hormone and somatostatin (SST) in the 1970s and 1980s and ghrelin in the 1990s. Characterisation of the physiological control of the axis was significantly advanced by frequent blood

Takotsubo syndrome and its linkage to neuroendocrinological disorders: a case report.

Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) is an increasingly diagnosed entity, however the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms and their clinical implications are incompletely understood. An 82-year-old female, diagnosed with pituitary apoplexy, presented with ECG abnormalities and hsTnI levels consistent with an acute coronary syndrome and therefore underwent urgent coronary angiography that showed no significant stenosis and apical ballooning at left ventricle angiogram and therefore a TTS diagnosis was made. Moreover, during catheterization a 20 s torsade de pointes was registered. TTS is an entity tha

ALL OUR SONS: THE DEVELOPMENTAL NEUROBIOLOGY AND NEUROENDOCRINOLOGY OF BOYS AT RISK.

Why are boys at risk? To address this question, I use the perspective of regulation theory to offer a model of the deeper psychoneurobiological mechanisms that underlie the vulnerability of the developing male. The central thesis of this work dictates that significant gender differences are seen between male and female social and emotional functions in the earliest stages of development, and that these result from not only differences in sex hormones and social experiences but also in rates of male and female brain maturation, specifically in the early developing right brain. I present interdi

Clinical-neuroendocrinological syndromes due to lesions of the cingulate gyrus in humans.

Clinical and neuroendocrinological studies were performed in 41 patients with arteriovenous malformations (AVM) of the cingulate gyrus. Before surgery, the primary affliction in 38 patients consisted of memory disturbance, 5 of these having signs of Korsakov's syndrome. Autonomic and epileptic fits were not typical. Of 38 patients undergoing surgery, postoperative worsening of memory occurred in 23, but no qualitatively new disturbances appeared. Korsakov's syndrome appeared de novo after surgery in 3 patients. The extent of memory disturbances correlated with the extent of lesions to the cing

[Studies on the Rett syndrome. Part 2. Polysomnographic and neuroendocrinological studies].

The biogenesis of the Rett syndrome (RS) is unknown although there have been several reports suggesting some biochemical defect of the monoaminergic system in CNS. We performed all night polysomnography and neuroendocrinological tests in three cases of RS discovered on a surveillance study in Tokushima. The following results were obtained; 1) dissociation of sleep elements (stage 1-REM, stage 2-REM), 2) no increase in REMs/min with development, 3) abnormal patterns of BMs, TMs of each sleep stage, 4) paradoxical secretion of growth hormone (GH) and excessive secretion of prolactin in TRH provo

Developmental Neuroendocrinology of Early-Life Stress: Impact on Child Development and Behavior.

Our internal balance, or homeostasis, is threatened or perceived as threatened by stressful stimuli, the stressors. The stress system is a highly conserved system that adjusts homeostasis to the resting state. Through the concurrent activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and the locus coeruleus/norepinephrine-autonomic nervous systems, the stress system provides the appropriate physical and behavioral responses, collectively termed as "stress response", to restore homeostasis. If the stress response is prolonged, excessive or even inadequate, several acute or chronic stress-rela

Endoscopic endonasal surgery for non-invasive pituitary neuroendocrinology tumors with incomplete pseudocapsule.

BACKGROUND: Pituitary neuroendocrinology tumors (PitNETs) with pseudocapsule can be effectively removed by the pseudocapsule-based extracapsular resection technique. In the areas without pseudocapsule, the tumor cells can spread into the adjacent tissues at the cellular level, which brings a great challenge to achieving total tumor resection. METHODS: Our surgical strategy for PitNETs with an incomplete pseudocapsule is to combine the pseudocapsule-based extracapsular resection technique with the intensive excision technique for the removal of the tumor. Specifically, the pseudocapsule-based

Rabbit Maternal Behavior: A Perspective from Behavioral Neuroendocrinology, Animal Production, and Psychobiology.

Rabbit maternal behavior (MB) impacts meat and fur production on the farm, survival of the species in the wild, and pet welfare. Specific characteristics of rabbit MB (i.e., three-step nest building process; single, brief, daily nursing bout) have been used as models for exploring particular themes in neuroscience, like obsessive-compulsive actions, circadian rhythms, and cognition. Particular hormonal combinations regulate nest building by acting on brain regions controlling MB in other mammals. Nonhormonal factors like type of lodging and the doe's social rank influence nursing and milk prod

From Brain Organoids to Networking Assembloids: Implications for Neuroendocrinology and Stress Medicine.

Brain organoids are three-dimensional cultures that contain multiple types of cells and cytoarchitectures, and resemble fetal human brain structurally and functionally. These organoids are being used increasingly to model brain development and disorders, however, they only partially recapitulate such processes, because of several limitations, including inability to mimic the distinct cortical layers, lack of functional neuronal circuitry as well as non-neural cells and gyrification, and increased cellular stress. Efforts to create improved brain organoid culture systems have led to region-spec

60 YEARS OF NEUROENDOCRINOLOGY: Biology of human craniopharyngioma: lessons from mouse models.

Adamantinomatous craniopharyngiomas (ACP) are clinically relevant tumours that are associated with high morbidity, poor quality of life and occasional mortality. Human and mouse studies have provided important insights into the biology of these aggressive tumours, and we are starting to understand why, how and when these tumours develop in humans. Mutations in β-catenin that result in the over-activation of the WNT/β-catenin signalling pathway are critical drivers of most, perhaps of all, human ACPs. Mouse studies have shown that only pituitary embryonic precursors or adult stem cells are able

Understanding and treating alcohol craving and dependence: recent pharmacological and neuroendocrinological findings.

There is a substantial need for discovering innovative ways to provide more information on the neurobiology of alcohol dependence as well as to discover more effective pharmacotherapies for alcohol dependence. Current research includes exploring new pathways able to modulate alcohol craving. In particular, research shows that several neuroendocrinological pathways may be involved in the neurobiology of alcohol craving and dependence. The first part of this review examines recent clinical findings on the role of feeding-related peptides in alcohol craving and dependence. Second, this review foc

Recent advances in reproductive neuroendocrinology: a role for RFamide peptides in seasonal reproduction?

Most temperate-zone species use photoperiod to coordinate breeding and ensure that offspring are born during favourable conditions. Although photoperiodic influences on the reproductive axis have been well characterized, the precise mechanisms by which photoperiodic information and other seasonal cues are integrated to regulate reproductive function remain less well specified. Two recently discovered neuropeptides, kisspeptin and gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone, have pronounced opposing influences on reproductive function. This paper will review recent evidence for a role of these peptides in

Rolf Christian Gaillard (1944-2011): A builder of modern European endocrinology and neuroendocrinology.

Rolf Christian Gaillard was a Swiss physician, scientist, and academic leader whose career contributed significantly to the development of modern European endocrinology and neuroendocrinology. Among his most remarkable qualities was an exceptional talent for organisation and institution-building. Together with his collaborators, Gaillard became internationally recognised for his work on regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. His research demonstrated how immune mediators influence endocrine regulation during infection, inflammation, trauma, and chronic stress. His scientific in

60 YEARS OF NEUROENDOCRINOLOGY: MEMOIR: Geoffrey Harris and my brush with his unit.

Geoffrey Harris is chiefly known for his demonstration of the control of the pituitary gland by the portal vessels coming from the hypothalamus. This does not do justice to his extraordinary contribution to biology. Harris' life's work was central in demonstrating the brain/body interactions by which animals and humans adapt to their environment, and above all the control of that most crucial and proximate of all evolutionary events - reproduction. In this brief review, I have tried to put Geoffrey Harris' work in the context of the scientific thinking at the time when he began his work, and a

Rasmussen's encephalitis and central precocious puberty. Neuroendocrinological characterization of three cases.

PURPOSE: Rasmussen's encephalitis (RE) is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by inflammation of the cerebral cortex, mainly unilateral, that leads to drug-resistant epilepsy and progressive neurological impairment. Central Precocious Puberty (CPP) is uncommon, albeit increased in frequency in patients with neurological conditions and the physiopathological bases of these associations remains unclear in most cases. Epilepsy has been proposed to play a role, as well as the accumulation of substances produced as a result of metabolism or tissue degeneration in some neurodegenerative di
