A 15-year-old boy presented with swelling in the submandibular region. X-ray of the swollen part showed faint radio opaque shadow. A provisional diagnosis of sialadenitis with sialolithiasis was made. Excised mass was reported histopathologically as plexiform neurofibroma of submandibular salivary gland.Plexiform neurofibroma of the salivary gland is a rare benign tumor often present in the parotid gland. It is very rare in submandibular salivary gland. It is a slow growing, locally infiltrating tumor.

A 52-year-old patient presented with an orbital swelling and exophthalmos that enlarged over a period of about 40 years. The clinical examination showed massive exophthalmos and ptosis of the right eye without diplopia. The radiological investigation (MRI, CT and ultrasound) showed an unclear intraorbital mass with erosion of the orbital floor, infraorbital rim and orbital roof. The lesion was diagnosed histologically as a plexiform neurofibroma. The patient did not present any features of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1) and molecular genetic analysis was unable to uncover a pathogenic sequenc

Dysphagia is a symptom associated with various diseases of the upper gastrointestinal and respiratory tract, and it may be the presenting symptom of numerous tumors of the head and neck. Plexiform neurofibromas (PNFs) are benign tumors of the peripheral nerves and connective tissue, which are usually associated with neurofibromatosis type 1. We present a rare case of a 52-year-old woman presenting with dysphagia and weight loss due to a massive PNF in the subcutaneous adipose tissue of the posterior neck, associated with C1-C2 dislocation, scoliosis of the vertebral column, and 2 meningoceles

OBJECTIVES: To present a case of an unusual benign tumor of the tongue treated successfully with radiotherapy.
STUDY DESIGN: Case report.
METHODS: Retrospective chart review.
RESULTS: A 60-year-old man presented with a painful submucosal lesion of the tongue base. Computed tomography showed an infiltrative soft-tissue mass involving the left base of the tongue. Operative biopsy revealed plexiform neurofibroma. Because of the patient's operative risk and the potential morbidity of surgical resection, he was treated with three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3DCRT). His treatment was acco

A 4 year-old boy was referred for diagnostic reevaluation with known pulmonary valve stenosis. Physical examination revealed multiple cafe-au-lait spots, inguinal freckling and on the right side in supraclavicular region a softly, non-painful tumour. The boy showed a mild mental and language retardation. Ultrasound and MRT demonstrated supraclavicular a plexiform neurofibroma and intracranial increased intensity lesions in basal ganglia and mesencephalon. In our patient, we have diagnosed a Watson-Syndrome, the overlap and differences to neurofibromatosis type I is discussed.

This is a case report of plexiform neurofibroma of the wrist presenting as a diffuse wrist mass mimicking juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Although radiologic and clinical findings were consistent with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, the biopsy diagnosis was plexiform neurofibroma. To our knowledge, a similar case has never been reported.

INTRODUCTION: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a rare genetic disorder frequently complicated by plexiform neurofibromas (PNs) - benign but often morbid tumors associated with pain, disfigurement, and functional impairment. Mitogen-activated protein kinase (MEK) inhibitors have emerged as an approach for the management of NF1-PNs.
AREAS COVERED: This review summarizes the pharmacology, mechanism of action, preclinical rationale, and clinical development of mirdametinib, a selective MEK1/2 inhibitor approved for the treatment of symptomatic, inoperable NF1-PNs in children and adults. We revie

Plexiform neurofibroma (PNF) is a rare but pathognomonic tumour associated with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1), an autosomal dominant neurocutaneous disorder. Although PNFs can affect various body regions, vulvar involvement is exceptionally uncommon. This report describes a 16-year-old female patient who presented at a dermatology center with a painless, hanging mass on the right labia majora, accompanied by multiple skin café-au-lait spots, freckling, and cutaneous neurofibromas. Clinical evaluation, genetics testing, imaging, and histopathological analysis confirmed a diagnosis of labia ma

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1)-related plexiform neurofibromas (pNF) can be debilitating and until recently, surgery was the only potentially effective therapy for these tumors.
METHODS: We review critical steps in the path towards the FDA approval of the first medical therapy for NF1 pNF and the current status of MEK inhbitor therapy.
RESULTS: Sustained efforts by the NF community have resulted in a detailed understanding of the natural history and biology of NF1-related peripheral nerve sheath tumors. This work provided the basis for the development of meaningful clinical trial

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to identify Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) characteristics that reliably distinguish deep plexiform neurofibromas (PNFs) from venous malformations (VMs).
METHODS: A database search was conducted for patients that were referred with a vascular anomaly but had a neurofibroma instead. Clinical and imaging features of patients with venous malformations as the most common referral diagnosis were compared to those with PNFs. The imaging features of deep PNFs recorded were: anatomical location, size, morphology, margins, signal intensity and post-contrast enha

BACKGROUND: Large plexiform neurofibromas can cause significant morbidity, functional impairment, and may be even life threatening. They most commonly arise in association with major nerve trunks and follow the distribution of the involved peripheral nerves, and can be subject to transformation into malignant peripheral nerve sheet tumors. They produce large infiltrative masses, which can involve major portions of the trunk or extremities. The main goal of this project is to analyze our surgical experience with plexiform neurofibromas excision and to describe our surgical technique that may he

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant disorder primarily affecting the development and growth of nerve cell tissues. Plexiform neurofibroma is considered an uncommon skin tumor. The involvement of the genitourinary tract or the lower limb is rare, with bladder, upper urinary tract and genital involvement reported in decreasing order of frequency. The management of patients with plexiform neurofibroma is not well defined and aiming mostly at controlling symptoms. We present a case of a giant genitourinary plexiform neurofibroma associated with lower limb gigantism in a patient

Neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant disorder caused by genetic alterations of the NF1 gene on 17q11.2. About 30% of NF1 patients develop plexiform neurofibromas (PNFs), which often cause severe clinical deficits. To determine whether there is a certain genotype underlying PNFs or subtypes of PNFs, we screened 42 NF1 patients from 41 families with PNFs for mutations in the NF1 gene. In 33 out of the 41 (80%) unrelated patients NF1 mutations were found, 24 are novel while the other 9 have been described in previous studies. The 33 mutations included 23 nonsense and frameshift, six

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is one of the most common neurogenetic diseases affecting adults and children. Neurofibromas are one of the most common of the protean manifestations of NF1. Plexiform neurofibromas, which will frequently cause cosmetic abnormalities, pain, and neurologic deficits, are composed of "neoplastic" Schwann cells accompanied by other participating cellular and noncellular components. There is increasing evidence that loss of NF1 expression in neoplastic Schwann cells is associated with elevated levels of activated RAS, supporting the notion that the NF1 gene product, n

Plexiform neurofibromas are one of the most common and disabling features of neurofibromatosis 1. Treatment options for patients with plexiform neurofibromas have been limited, with surgery being the primary option for patients with progressive lesions causing significant morbidity. Trials have evaluated other treatment approaches, including the use of antihistamines, maturation agents, and antiangiogenic agents. The design of such trials and entry criteria have been quite variable, and results have been difficult to interpret. As more is understood concerning the molecular genetic underpinnin

Neurofibromatosis (NF) is a hereditary autosomal dominant disorder. Von Recklinghausen first described NF in 1882, which is now classified as Neurofibromatosis 1 (NF-1). NF-1 is the most commonly encountered NF which affects 1 in 4000 persons. Clinical manifestations of NF-1 include: generalized cutaneous neurofibroma, pigmented skin patches (cafe-au-lait spots), pigmented iris hamartoma (Lisch nodules), skeletal abnormally, CNS tumors, etc. The subject of this case study is a young adult male with a huge plexiform neurofibroma involving both the liver and head regions. The head tumor measured
