Neurogenic bowel dysfunction (NBD) translation and linguistic validation to classical Arabic.

OBJECTIVE: To translate and linguistically validate in classical Arabic; the French version of the neurogenic bowel dysfunction (NBD). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Arabic translation of the NBD score was obtained by the "forward translation/backword translation" method. Patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and spinal cord injury were included. Evaluation of intestinal and anorectal disorders was conducted by the self-administered questionnaire NBD, which was filled twice two weeks apart. An item-by-item analysis was made. The feasibility, acceptability, internal consistency using Cronbach's alpha,

Malone antegrade continence enemas for autonomic dysreflexia secondary to neurogenic bowel.

A 42-year-old man with T-4 ASIA B thoracic paraplegia presented with chronic constipation, fecal incontinence, and bowel-related autonomic dysreflexia (AD) refractory to conservative bowel program. His usual toileting time lasted one to five hours. Antegrade continence enemas (ACE) were performed. The ACE technique, which requires creating a continent catheterizable appendicocecostomy, is described. Postoperatively, a daily enema was given through the stoma. The patient's toileting time was reduced to 20 minutes and his AD resolved. The role of the ACE is discussed in adult spinal cord injury

Neurogenic Bowel and Management after Spinal Cord Injury: A Narrative Review.

People with spinal cord injury (SCI) suffer from the sequela of neurogenic bowel and its disabling complications primarily constipation, fecal incontinence, and gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms. Neurogenic bowel is a functional bowel disorder with a spectrum of defecatory disorders as well as colonic and gastrointestinal motility dysfunction. This manuscript will review the anatomy and physiology of gastrointestinal innervation, as well as the pathophysiology associated with SCI. It will provide essential information on the recent guidelines for neurogenic bowel assessment and medical management

Spinal cord injury-induced neurogenic bowel: A role for host-microbiome interactions in bowel pain and dysfunction.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Spinal cord injury (SCI) affects roughly 300,000 Americans with 17,000 new cases added annually. In addition to paralysis, 60% of people with SCI develop neurogenic bowel (NB), a syndrome characterized by slow colonic transit, constipation, and chronic abdominal pain. The knowledge gap surrounding NB mechanisms after SCI means that interventions are primarily symptom-focused and largely ineffective. The goal of the present studies was to identify mechanism(s) that initiate and maintain NB after SCI as a critical first step in the development of evidence-based, novel therap

The Neurogenic Bowel Dysfunction score (NBD) is not suitable for patients with multiple sclerosis.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. OBJECTIVE: Bowel and anorectal dysfunctions are common in patients with multiple sclerosis (pwMS). The use of validated questionnaires is recommended in the initial assessment and patient's follow-up. The Neurogenic Bowel Dysfunction (NBD) score is the most used questionnaire but has been developed in spinal cord injured patients and has never been validated in other neurological diseases. We aimed to assess NBD's relevance in pwMS. SETTINGS: Monocentric study in a tertiary neuro-urology department. METHODS: A retrospective study in pwMS consulting

Neurogenic Bowel Management Using Transanal Irrigation by Persons with Spinal Cord Injury.

Neurogenic bowel has received surprisingly little attention. Among individuals with spinal cord injury, bowel function is considered a major physical and psychological problem that stems from the severe negative impact on social life and mobility. With transanal irrigation, individuals with neurogenic bowel have received an additional tool that may simplify life and improve independence. A recent survey showed that as many as 37% of the spinal cord injury patients interviewed had not heard about transanal irrigation. It should be a high priority at spinal cord injury centers to support patient

Intravesical electrical stimulation improves neurogenic bowel dysfunction in children with spina bifida.

PURPOSE: We observed concomitant improvement in fecal incontinence in children with myelomeningocele undergoing intravesical electrical stimulation (IVES) to decrease uninhibited bladder contractions and increase bladder capacity and/or bladder sensation. We retrospectively reviewed the effect of intravesical electrical stimulation on neurogenic bowel dysfunction in these children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 9 boys and 15 girls 3.9 to 13.2 years old (mean age 8.1) completed a mean of 30.3 daily sessions (range 10 to 69) of IVES. Evaluation forms were used to record frequency of fecal i

Neurogenic bowel dysfunction after spinal cord injury: clinical evaluation and rehabilitative management.

Neurogenic bowel dysfunction (NBD) is one of many impairments that result from spinal cord injury (SCI). The experience of persons with SCI reveals that the risk and occurrence of fecal incontinence and difficulty with evacuation are particularly significant life-limiting problems. This review relates the anatomy and physiology of colon function to the specific pathophysiology that detracts from the quality of life of persons after SCI. There are two patterns of NBD after SCI: the upper motor neuron bowel, which results from a spinal cord lesion above the sacral level, and the lower motor neur

Efficacy of bilateral sacral neuromodulation in treating neurogenic bladder and bowel dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: Neurogenic bladder-bowel dysfunction remains refractory to conventional therapies in many patients. While unilateral sacral neuromodulation (SNM) is established, comparative evidence for bilateral stimulation in combined dysfunction is lacking. This study evaluated whether bilateral SNM outperforms unilateral stimulation in this population. METHODS: In this two-center retrospective study, 20 patients with neurogenic bladder and bowel dysfunction underwent a self-paired sequential testing protocol comparing pre-operative baseline, unilateral stimulation, and bilateral stimulation s

Surgical evaluation and management of neurogenic bowel and bladder in children with spinal dysraphism.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Neurogenic bowel and bladder are common comorbidities found in children with spinal dysraphism. Although historically managed reactively, treatment focus has shifted toward proactive surgical and medical management aimed to preserve renal function and achieve social continence. This review evaluates recent evidence in the evaluation and surgical management of these conditions, emphasizing a multidisciplinary approach to ensure long-term independence for pediatric patients with spinal dysraphism. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent guidelines suggest delaying initial renal imaging until

Electrical stimulation of sacral nerves and roots for control of the neurogenic bladder and bowel.

After damage to the spinal cord, some of the most frequent and severe complications are due to the neurogenic bladder and bowel, in spite of a variety of methods of management. Bladder and bowel emptying is usually impaired, but electrical stimulation of nerves surviving after spinal cord injury can produce controlled contraction of muscle, including the smooth muscle of the bladder and lower bowel, and this can be used to produce safe and effective bladder emptying on demand without catheters. It can also aid emptying of the bowel and reduce constipation. Hyper-reflexia of the bladder and low
