Effects of activated protein C on the size of modeled ischemic focus and morphometric parameters of neurons and neuroglia in its perifocal zone.

The effects of activated protein C (APC) on the quantitative parameters of neurons and neuroglia in the perifocal zone of infarction induced in the left hemispheric cortex were studied in two groups of rats. Group 1 animals served as control (control infarction). Group 2 rats were injected with APC (50 μg/kg) in the right lateral cerebral ventricle 3 h after infarction was induced, and after 72 h the infarction size was evaluated and the neurons and neuroglia in the perifocal zone were counted. APC reduced the infarction size 2.5 times in comparison with the control and reduced by 16% the neur

Localization of West Nile Virus in monkey brain: double staining antigens immunohistochemically of neurons, neuroglia cells and West Nile Virus.

West Nile virus (WNV) can cause encephalitis or meningitis that affects brain tissue, which can also lead to permanent neurological damage that can be fatal. To our knowledge, no consistent double immunohistochemical staining of neurons, neuroglia cells, and WNV has yet been reported. To establish a method for performing double-label immunohistochemical detection of neurons, neuroglia cells and WNV, examining the pathological characteristics of WNV-infected neurons, neuroglia cells, and investigating distribution of WNV in monkey brain, paraffin-embedded monkey brain tissue were retrospectivel

Cytospectrophotometric studies on the lactate dehydrogenase isoenzymes in functionally different neuron-neuroglia units. I. Optimal procedure conditions and topochemical comparisons in normal mice.

Optimal conditions are described to reveal quantitatively the total activity of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and the activity of its H- and M-form in the nervous tissue sections when applying Brody and Engel's tetrazolium method modified by Gerebtzoff. This histochemical reaction has been shown to obey Bouger-Lambert-Beer's law which confirms the possibility of the quantitative determination of the activity of LDH and its isoenzymes by means of cytospectrophotometric method. In the neurons of different areas of the mouse nervous system (cerebral cortex, cerebellar cortex, spinal cord anterior h

Patterns of neuroglial proliferation in spinal cord white matter following exposure to ionizing radiation.

X-irradiation temporarily decreases the proliferative activity of neuroglia in immature rat spinal cord. Later, the proliferative activity in these irradiated regions surpasses that noted in control rats. Areas adjacent to the irradiated region have a greater than normal percentage of labelled neuroglia and may also be a source of neuroglia which re-populate the irradiated zone.

Clinical implications of Schwann cell biology.

The neuroglia of the peripheral nervous system (PNS) are derived from the neural crest and are a diverse family of cells. They consist of myelinating Schwann cells, non-myelinating Schwann cells, satellite cells, and perisynaptic Schwann cells. Due to their prominent role in the formation of myelin, myelinating Schwann cells are the best recognised of these cells. However, Schwann cells and the other neuroglia of the PNS have many functions that are independent of myelination and contribute significantly to the functioning of the peripheral nerve in both health and disease. Here we discuss the

A quantitative histological study of neuroglial number in the retrofacial, facial and trigeminal motor nuclei in the ageing mouse brain.

The number of neuroglia was estimated in the retrofacial, facial and trigeminal motor nuclei of the mouse brain at 6, 25, 28 and 31 months of age. There was no statistically significant variation in neuroglial number in either the facial or trigeminal motor nuclei despite changes in neuron number. There was a decrease in the number of neuroglia in the retrofacial nucleus between 25 and 28 months which was slightly greater than the decrease in neuronal number, followed by a small increase in neuroglial number between 28 and 31 months of age. The glia-to-neuron ratio in the facial and trigeminal

Neuroglial roots of neurodegenerative diseases?

Neuroglia is critically important for controlling the brain homeostasis and for mounting the brain defence against pathological insults. Here, we overview recent data about the role of neuroglia in various types of neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, fronto-temporal dementia, Wernicke encephalopathy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and immunodeficiency virus-1-associated dementia). In all these forms of neurodegeneration, astroglia undergoes complex morphological and functional changes. The early and mid-term stages of neurodegenerative processes, and specifical

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis with special reference to the ultrastructure of inclusions in the brain and lung.

A 7-year-old boy, who was diagnosed as typical SSPE by clinical data and laboratory findings, was autopsied and observed by immunofluorescent techniques, light and electron microscope. The morphological characteristics in the brain were perivascular cuffings with plasma cells, lymphocytes and mononuclear cells, gliosis and a large number of intranuclear and intracytoplasmic inclusions in the neuroglias and nerve cells. Various kinds of intranuclear inclusions were elucidated by electron microscopy and the fin structures of these inclusions were described in detail. At least five types of intra

Higher serum S100B and BDNF levels are correlated with a lower pressure-pain threshold in fibromyalgia.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia (FM) is conceptualized as a central sensitization (CS) condition, that presents high serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and neuroglia activation. Although the S100B protein regulates neuroglia functions, it has been traditionally used as a proxy of central nervous system damage. However, neither BDNF nor S100B association with the clinical picture of FM has been elucidated. To explore their association with the pressure-pain threshold (PPT) in FM, we performed a cross-sectional study, including 56 females with confirmed FM aged 18-65 years. Linear regressio

Novel eosinophilic inclusion in astrocytes.

Intracytoplasmic and brightly eosinophilic inclusions within neuroglias are reported in a patient with Aicardi's syndrome. Most inclusion-bearing neuroglias were protoplasmic astrocytes in the cerebral cortex. Compared with similar eosinophilic and intracytoplasmic inclusions in other studies using both light and electron microscopy, the inclusions in this report are regarded as being novel and not previously described. Ultrastructurally, the inclusions were composed of electron-dense granules and amorphous substances, and were not surrounded by a limiting membrane. They were numerous in the c

Comparative role of SOX10 gene in the gliogenesis of central, peripheral, and enteric nervous systems.

SOX10 gene and SOX10 protein are responsible for the gliogenesis of neuroglia from the neural crest cells. Expression of SOX10 gene encodes SOX10 protein which binds with DNA at its minor groove via its HMG domain upon activation. SOX10 protein undergoes bending and changes its conformation after binding with DNA. Via its transactivation domain and HMG domain, it further activates several other transcription factors, these cause gliogenesis of the neural crest cells into neuroglia. In literature, it is stated that the SOX10 gene helps in the formation of schwann cells, oligodendrocytes, and en

Schwann cells shape the neuro-immune environs and control cancer progression.

At present, significant experimental and clinical data confirm the active involvement of the peripheral nervous system (PNS) in different phases of cancer development and progression. Most of the research effort focuses on the impact of distinct neuronal types, e.g., adrenergic, cholinergic, dopaminergic, etc. in carcinogenesis, generally ignoring neuroglia. The very fact that these cells far outnumber the other cellular types may also play an important role worthy of study in this context. The most prevalent neuroglia within the PNS consists of Schwann cells (SCs). These cells play a substant

The Pathobiology of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: The Case for Neuroglial Failure.

Although myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) has a specific and distinctive profile of clinical features, the disease remains an enigma because causal explanation of the pathobiological matrix is lacking. Several potential disease mechanisms have been identified, including immune abnormalities, inflammatory activation, mitochondrial alterations, endothelial and muscular disturbances, cardiovascular anomalies, and dysfunction of the peripheral and central nervous systems. Yet, it remains unclear whether and how these pathways may be related and orchestrated. Here we expl

Evolution of Oligodendroglia and Myelin.

The evolution of the nervous system emerged in primaeval animals to coordinate their behaviour then advanced by the division of function between neurones and neuroglia; neurones became dedicated to information processing and neuroglia specialised in homeostatic support. As the nervous system became more complex and neurones extended axonal connections, so periaxonal glial cells arose to provide axonal support. In many invertebrates, periaxonal glia produce multilamellar structures similar in architecture and function to the myelin sheath of vertebrates. These protomyelin structures support exc

Steroid Receptor Coactivator-Interacting Protein (SIP) Alleviates Ischemic Cerebral Infarction Damage Through the NF-κB Pathway.

Ischemic stroke leads to high mortality and disability rates in humans. Cerebral ischemic injury has a severe complex pathophysiological mechanism. The abnormal release of inflammatory cytokines will cause brain tissue damage and destroy the blood-brain barrier integrity, which aggravates the process of brain injury. Therefore, attenuating the level of inflammatory response is critical for the therapy of cerebral ischemia injury. This study examined the rule of SIP treatment to support neuron protective effect after cerebral injury in an animal model of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO).

Changes of Microglial Cells in the Progression of Neurodegeneration in Natural Prion Disease.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, neuroglia has become a therapeutic target for neurodegenerative diseases. Despite the recognition of a variety of microglial morphologies associated with the neuroinflammatory process that involve diverse functionalities for this glial type, it is still unknown its beneficial or harmful role to the surrounding tissue. METHODS: The study presented here proposes a novel approach to the neurodegenerative progression based on the reliability of its results due to the use of a natural model. Morphological alterations in microglia were assessed in cerebellar samples fro

Melanocortin Derivatives Induced Vascularization and Neuroglial Proliferation in the Rat Brain under Conditions of Cerebral Ischemia.

Stroke remains the second leading cause of death worldwide. The development of new therapeutic agents focused on restoring vascular function and neuroprotection of viable tissues is required. In this study the neuroprotective activity of melanocortin-like ACTH(4-7)PGP and ACTH(6-9)PGP peptides was investigated in rat brain at 24 h after transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (tMCAO). The severity of ischemic damage, changes in the proliferative activity of neuroglial cells and vascularization of rat brain tissue were analyzed. The administration of peptides resulted in a significant increa
