An attempt was made to develop a new method of microsurgery of the larynx. A newly designed laryngostroboscope suitable for our purpose was employed in our new method. The vibratory pattern was stroboscopically examined through the operating microscope throughout the operative procedure while the patients who were able to phonate due to neuroleptanalgesia were asked to do so. Thus, the determination of the completion time of the operation was obtained mainly by the observation of stroboscopic vibratory patterns of the vocal cords. We have studied 22 consecutive cases of posterior cervical osteotomy done at the Toronto East General Hospital between October 1967 and November 1973. The anaesthetic management is discussed in some detail and consists of psychological preparation of the patient, and neuroleptanalgesia with infiltration with local anaesthetic by the surgeon. Proper use of anesthetics is of paramount importance for humane animal care. Current research trends show a greater reliance on rats for laboratory investigations. This study compared several dosages for four different drugs, (pentobarbital, fentanyl-droperidol, ketamine-xylazine and ketamine-diazepam) for use in the laboratory rat. Comparative study of thiopental pharmacokinetics and hemodynamics has been conducted in two groups of pregnant women subjected to planned cesarean section. Group I consisted of 6 women (thiopental dose 8.0 mg/kg was combined with components of neuroleptanalgesia), group II consisted of 7 women (the drug dose 4.68 mg/kg was combined with moradol analgesia). Thirty patients with intractable idiopathic epistaxis were treated with endovascular therapy. Embolization of the internal maxillary artery controlled the epistaxis in 87% of the patients, and the success rate was increased to 97% after supplemental embolization of the facial artery.
