Velamentous cord insertion, ischemic-hypoxic encephalopathy, and neurological rehabilitation: A case report.

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy is a frequent and important cause of neurological problems in term and preterm newborns. A sentinel event of this entity is the vasa previa, specifically when there is an abnormality of the placenta such as a velamentous cord insertion. Some reports have shown the association between these two entities, but those regarding the recovery process and the neurological prognosis of children with both conditions are scarce. We present the case of a patient with a history of velamentous cord insertion and hypoxicischemic encephalopathy who received therapeutic hypother

Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survivors need both cardiological and neurological rehabilitation!

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Most survivors of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) suffer from cardiologic symptoms and approximately half of them experience cognitive problems because of hypoxic brain damage. Symptoms of anxiety and depression are also common. This review aims to give an overview of recent literature on rehabilitation treatment aiming at improvement of quality of life after OHCA. RECENT FINDINGS: Existing cognitive screening tools are now validated for OHCA survivors. OHCA patients with cognitive deficits may have lower exercise capacity. Cardiac rehabilitation seems to be well tole

Structural conditions of interprofessional collaboration in neurological early rehabilitation wards: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Early neurological and neurosurgical rehabilitation (ENR, phase B) forms the transition from acute treatment to further rehabilitation and requires close integration of acute medical and rehabilitative measures. Interprofessional collaboration (IPC) is a central component of rehabilitative care according to the ICF (International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health) model. Previous research has focused on individual and team competencies to promote IPC. Recent studies suggest that IPC is also influenced by structural conditions. Against this background, the study e

Technology-Enabled Upper Limb Rehabilitation for Neurological Impairment: A Feasibility Randomized-Controlled Trial Protocol.

Background. Technology-enabled upper limb (UL) rehabilitation improves therapy intensity and impairment outcomes, however clinical usage remains low and evidence for functional outcomes is limited. While benefits of single-mode technologies have been demonstrated, a combination of technology modes or "hybrid" approach is an emerging option with shoulder to fingertip capability. Investigation of this approach within a hospital setting is warranted to inform occupational therapy practice with neurological patients. Purpose. This study examines feasibility of hybrid technology-enabled UL rehabili
