Classification of temporal lobe epilepsy based on neuropsychological tests and exploration of its underlying neurobiology.

OBJECTIVE: To assist improving long-term postoperative seizure-free rate, we aimed to use machine learning algorithms based on neuropsychological data to differentiate temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) from extratemporal lobe epilepsy (extraTLE), as well as explore the relationship between magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and neuropsychological tests. METHODS: Twenty-three patients with TLE and 23 patients with extraTLE underwent neuropsychological tests and MRI scans before surgery. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator were firstly employed for feature selection, and a machine lear

When self-report diverges from performance: the usage of BIS-11 along with neuropsychological tests.

Impulsivity has been fractionated into multiple independent, but correlated, components. Personality and neuropsychological studies have consistently shown its multidimensional nature. Each theoretical approach uses different techniques such as self-report questionnaires and neuropsychological tests to assess impulsivity, respectively. Our main objective was to investigate if there is evidence of convergent validity for impulsivity as assessed by both types of measures. We administered the Barratt Impulsivity Scale 11 and two neuropsychological tests (Iowa Gambling Task and Continuous Performa

International variation in neuropsychological test use practices: Implications for test adaptation and fair assessment.

Neuropsychological test selection varies substantially across countries and languages, yet which instruments clinicians use internationally remains poorly documented. Using a survey of International Neuropsychological Society members (INSConnect, 2023), we examined instrument endorsement among 147 respondents across 30+ countries. English-language administrators endorsed more instruments per cognitive domain clinically than non-English administrators, particularly in memory, executive functioning, language, intelligence, and performance validity. Multilingual status showed little association w

Cognitive and neuropsychological test performance of persons with abnormalities of adolescent development: a test of Waber's hypothesis.

20 children with idiopathic precocious puberty, 27 adolescents with clinically delayed puberty, and an equivalent number of controls matched for age, sex, and IQ were given a battery of tests. These included measures of verbal and spatial abilities and a task assessing hemispheric lateralization using a dichotic listening procedure. Comparisons with matched controls revealed poorer verbal and spatial abilities for precocious males and poorer verbal, but better spatial, abilities for precocious females. Delayed developing males demonstrated superior verbal skills compared with controls, whereas

Assessment of a digital game as a neuropsychological test for postoperative cognitive dysfunction.

OBJECTIVE: Postoperative cognitive dysfunction may result from worsening in a condition of previous impairment. It causes greater difficulty in recovery, longer hospital stays, and consequent delay in returning to work activities. Digital games have a potential neuromodulatory and rehabilitation effect. In this study, a digital game was used as a neuropsychological test to assess postoperative cognitive dysfunction, with preoperative patient performance as control. METHODS: It was a non-controlled study, with patients selected among candidates for elective non-cardiac surgery, evaluated in th

Developing Cognition Endpoints for the CENTER-TBI Neuropsychological Test Battery.

Background: Measuring cognitive functioning is common in traumatic brain injury (TBI) research, but no universally accepted method for combining several neuropsychological test scores into composite, or summary, scores exists. This study examined several possible composite scores for the test battery used in the large-scale study Collaborative European NeuroTrauma Effectiveness Research in Traumatic Brain Injury (CENTER-TBI). Methods: Participants with mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI; n = 140), orthopedic trauma (n = 72), and healthy community controls (n = 70) from the Trondheim MTBI follow

Neck Circumference, Brain Imaging Measures, and Neuropsychological Testing Measures.

BACKGROUND: Perivascular fat may have direct effects on local vascularity. Neck fat is associated with carotid intimal thickness, a predictor of brain aging outcomes. This study investigated whether neck circumference, an estimation of neck fat, has unique associations with brain aging outcomes. METHODS: The study sample (n = 2082, 53.5% women, mean age 60.9 years) was derived from Framingham Heart Study participants with brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and neuropsychological (NP) test measures. Multivariable-adjusted regressions examined cross-sectional associations of neck circumfere

The Neuropsychology of Adolescent Sexual Offending: Testing an Executive Dysfunction Hypothesis.

Although executive dysfunctions are commonly hypothesized to contribute to sexual deviance or aggression, evidence of this relationship is scarce and its specificity is unproven, especially among adolescents. The objective of this study was to compare the executive functioning (EF) of adolescents with sexual offense convictions (ASOC) to that of non-sex-delinquents (NSD). A secondary goal was to assess the relationship among specific sexual offense characteristics (i.e., victim age), history of childhood sexual abuse (CSA), and EF. It was hypothesized that as a group, ASOC would present simila

The neuropsychology of iNPH: findings and evaluation of tests in the European multicentre study.

OBJECTIVE: Neuropsychological dysfunction is common in patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH). Shunt treatment is beneficial, some patients reaching complete or almost complete recovery, while others show only minor improvement. We aimed to assess the efficacy of a small selection of well characterized and sensitive neuropsychological tests in the context of the European multicentre study on iNPH (Eu-INPH). METHODS: One hundred and forty-two iNPH patients included in Eu-iNPH were tested with the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT), the Grooved Pegboard and the Str

EEG reactivity correlates with neuropsychological test scores in Down's syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Down's syndrome patients express a neurodegenerative disorder and mental retardation. We studied the reactivity of EEG and its correlation with neuropsychological test score in Down's syndrome. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We studied 32 patients with Down's syndrome and 31 controls for blocking of occipital EEG activity. The temporo-occipital EEG with eyes open (EO) was compared with resting EEG with eyes closed (EC), (EC/EO ratio). RESULTS: Both Down patients and controls showed significant diminution of alpha, beta and theta activity and decrease of EEG frequency with EO. However, t

Effects of sequential neuropsychological testing of an elderly community-based sample.

The magnitude and importance of changes in scores of neuropsychological tests on retest in the elderly, especially over long time periods, is not well established. Three neuropsychological tests and one mental status test were initially administered to screen for potential dementia and were readministered to 380 of the surviving individuals 2.4 years later who either failed the screening examination or were an age matched control. Of the 380 women and men aged 65 and older, 56 were diagnosed as having Alzheimer disease (AD), 82 as at risk for developing AD, and 242 as having normal cognition.

The stability of neuropsychological test performance in a group of parenteral drug users.

The stability of neuropsychological performance in a sample of drug abusers was investigated for a wide range of neuropsychological tests, using a test-retest paradigm with 16 parenteral drug users. The battery administered included tests of general intellectual function, abstract reasoning, verbal memory, language, attention, visuospatial ability, set switching, speeded performance, and manipulative dexterity. Stability coefficients were of a moderate to high magnitude for most of the tests and were comparable to coefficients found in other studies of non-drug-users. Two exceptions, however,

Effects of time-of-day on neuropsychological testing as measured by dichotic listening.

In a study of 30 reading-disabled and 30 normal-achieving children tested on a dichotic listening task using digits in either morning or afternoon settings neither laterality nor capacity differences were evident between groups in the afternoon. In the morning, the normal-achieving children compared to the disabled readers were more strongly lateralized when attending selectively to the right channel and less lateralized when attending to the left channel, suggesting disabled readers do not respond normally to circadian influences and may suffer from a time-locked dysfunction which reduces the

Do cognitive activities during neuropsychological testing trigger seizures?

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have suggested that stress precipitates seizures and that cognitive exertion may increase brain excitability, thereby possibly contributing to seizure occurrence during neuropsychological examinations. The present study investigates whether specific, standardized cognitive activities are linked to seizure occurrence. METHODS: Two thousand neuropsychological examinations including the Verbal Learning and Memory Test (VLMT) and Diagnosticum für Cerebralschädigung-Revised (DCS-R) were retrospectively evaluated, and occurrence of seizures during neuropsychological test

Blood pressure and neuropsychological test performance in healthy postmenopausal women.

PURPOSE: To study the association between blood pressure and neuropsychological test performance in healthy postmenopausal women. METHODS: Data from 88 healthy postmenopausal women aged 46-73 years, who were not experiencing hot flashes, and who had participated in a prior drug trial, were analyzed to find whether baseline blood pressure was associated with impaired performance on neuropsychological testing done at 3 follow-up visits separated by 4 weeks. Factor analysis was used to reduce the dimensions of neuropsychological test performance. Mixed linear modeling was used to evaluate the as

Adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder identified by neuropsychological testing.

The authors used neuropsychological tests to assess and classify adult patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and controls. Four memory tests correctly classified 81% of subjects. The memory tests were: the auditory Consonant trigram test, the Benton Visual Retention test, the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning test, and the modified Diagnosticum für Cerebralschädigung. The patients scored lower than controls also in other tests sensitive to frontal lobe dysfunction. The results underpin the importance of neuropsychological testing in adult ADD, but also support notions of a w

Are Greebles like faces? Using the neuropsychological exception to test the rule.

Which image geometries count as face-like and which do not? Across multiple experiments, novel objects called Greebles have been used to argue that face-specific effects can be obtained with non-face stimuli under certain situations, in particular with expert observers. However, this claim depends on the argument that these non-face stimuli are not a priori treated by the face processing system. To address this question, CK, a neuropsychological patient well-known for exhibiting severe visual object agnosia and dyslexia but intact face processing, was tested with Greebles. CK performed poorly

Development of computerized Kana Pick-out Test for the neuropsychological examination.

The Kana Pick-out Test, which was developed in Japan and done with paper and pencil, is said to be suitable for inspecting higher-order brain function and to be a good method for screening persons with mild or slight dementia. We have developed a computerized version of the Kana Pick-out Test, which runs on a stand-alone computer, intended to be utilized for mass screening and self-administration. The program was developed with Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 and runs under the Windows operating system on any IBM PC compatible computer. In this study, all subjects could use the system by interactin

A case of Kleine-Levin syndrome examined with SPECT and neuropsychological testing.

A case of Kleine-Levin syndrome with typical periodic hypersomnia and bulimia was diagnosed. On examination with single photo emission tomography (SPECT) (CERETEC) during a relapse period and 2 weeks later there was marked cortical hypoperfusion of the frontal and temporal lobes, especially on the left side as well as in the right parietal lobe. Neuropsychological testing performed 1 week after a relapse showed a reduction in encoding to memory function of verbal learning indicating neocortical damage of the left fronto-temporal region. A follow-up 2 months later after the patient had spontane

Abnormal Wada and neuropsychological testing results due to topiramate therapy.

A 46-year-old man experienced intractable seizures since childhood. Due to lack of response to antiepilepsy drugs (AEDs), he underwent a surgical evaluation that was consistent with seizure onset in the left medial temporal lobe. While on topiramate and carbamazepine, his preoperative neuropsychological scores and sodium amytal (Wada) scores were low and may have excluded him from surgery. Repeat testing on lamotrigine and carbamazepine showed improvement in his scores, allowing him to undergo surgery. Physicians must therefore be cautious in evaluating such test scores while a patient is on t
