BACKGROUND: Many different tumors have been reported to occur simultaneously as collision lesions. To date, no such events have been reported between mycosis fungoides (MFs) and melanocytic neoplasms.
METHODS: Two cases are presented in which patches of MF were superimposed on melanocytic nevi. In addition, 967 biopsies of MF from 411 patients were identified in an 8-year retrospective database search. Patient pathology history summaries were reviewed to identify inflamed nevi, atypical nevi, and melanoma submitted for histologic evaluation from this population.

BACKGROUND: In analogy with melanoma-associated leucoderma, halo naevi may trigger in some patients the development of additional depigmentations which are in distribution, extent and prognosis not in accordance with classic vitiligo.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to support the hypothesis that in a subset of halo naevi patients vitiligo-like lesions develop directly linked to the halo phenomenon.

Halo nevi, also termed Sutton nevi, are defined as benign melanocytic nevi that are surrounded by an area of depigmentation resembling a halo. Halo nevi are common in children and young adults, with a mean age at onset of 15 years. The incidence in the population is estimated to be approximately 1%. Halo formation in association with congenital nevi is uncommon and is postulated to have an immunologic etiology. In this report, we present nine cases of patients with congenital nevi and vitiligo who uniquely developed both halo formation around the nevi in addition to vitiligo formation in distinctly separate locations. While the precise etiology of halo formation and vitiligo remains uncertain, several theories suggest that both phenomena result from an immunologic response to pigment cells, whether in the "normal" skin of vitiligo or in the excessively pigmented congenital nevus.

Vitiligo associated with halo congenital melanocytic nevus (CMN) is rare. There are limited reports in the literature, especially with regard to CMN excision. We present the case of a 5-year-old girl who presented with vitiligo of the periorbital and axillary regions and halo formation around CMN of the buttock. Halo nevus is an autoimmune skin disorder characterized by autoreactive CD8+ T cells that target and destroy melanocytes, resulting in a depigmented perilesional halo. Perinevoid alopecia (PA) is a rare variant of alopecia areata (AA) associated with a central pigmented nevus. In this study, we reported two cases of PA and reviewed 14 cases from 11 studies in the literature. In one of our cases, PA was combined with a halo nevus and white terminal hairs were spared in the hair loss patch, which was rarely reported in the literature. It is implicated that antigens from melanocytes might be involved in the development of AA in PA.

Halo naevi are considered benign. They occur in children and adolescents. Eruptive multiple halo naevi are infrequently seen in adults. The first patient in this case series had previously had melanoma. Positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) showed a papillary thyroid carcinoma. Subsequent adult patients underwent an examination programme similar to melanoma patients with unknown primary, including PET scanning. Sixteen patients were followed over a 6-year period. Tocilizumab, a humanized monoclonal antibody directed against the interleukin (IL)-6 receptor, is approved for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). Turner syndrome is a genetic disorder characterized by an abnormal or missing X-chromosome. Rarely reported cutaneous manifestations in Turner syndrome include hemangiomas, angiokeratomas, hirsutism, and halo nevi. A recent study demonstrated an increased prevalence of halo nevi in Turner syndrome when compared to vitiligo. We present a case of halo nevi with multiple melanocytic nevi in an 11-year-old patient with Turner syndrome on growth hormone.
