This first study about human leptospiroses in New Caledonia reports 32 cases diagnosed between 1973 and 1980. They are typical forms with hepatonephritis in 90 % of cases. Serogroup Icterohaemorrhagiae is predominating (75 %), followed by Canicola and Australis. The disease is spread throughout the whole territory with two foci in the suburbs of the main town where there are irrigated market gardens. Contamination is indirect by contact with water infected by rodents.

An abattoir survey was performed in the French Melanesian archipelago of New Caledonia to determine the prevalence of paramphistomes in cattle and deer and to generate material for molecular typing at species and subspecies level. Prevalence in adult cattle was high at animal level (70% of 387 adult cattle) and batch level (81%). Prevalence was lower in calves at both levels (33% of 484 calves, 51% at batch level). Animals from 2 of 7 deer farms were positive for rumen fluke, with animal-level prevalence of 41.4% (29/70) and 47.1% (33/70), respectively. Using ITS-2 sequencing, 3 species of par

A new genus and species, Avitocaligus assurgericola gen. et sp. n., of the family Caligidae is established based on an ovigerous female collected from a razorback scabbardfish, Assurger anzac (Alexander), caught off New Caledonia. This is the first record of any parasitic copepod from this fish. The new genus is placed in the Caligidae since it possesses the caligid cephalothorax incorporating the first to third pedigerous somites. It also exhibits biramous first and fourth swimming legs but lacks dorsal plates on the fourth pedigerous somite. This combination of characters serves to different

Zika virus (ZIKV) infection has been associated with neurologic disorders including Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). In New Caledonia during the ZIKV outbreak (2014-2015), case-control and retrospective studies have been performed to assess the link between ZIKV and GBS. Among the 15 cases included, 33% had evidence of a recent ZIKV infection compared to only 3.3% in the 30 controls involved. All patients were Melanesian, had facial diplegia and similar neurophysiological pattern consistent with acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, and recovered well. Furthermore, during the peak of

Marine pelagic cyanobacteria Trichodesmium are widespread in the New Caledonia lagoon. Blooms of these Oscillatoriales are suspected to be a potential source of toxins in the ciguatera food chain and were previously reported to contain certain types of paralysing toxins. In the present study, toxicity experiments were conducted on lipid- and water-soluble extracts of freeze-dried samples of these cyanobacteria. Lipid-soluble fractions revealed a ciguatoxin-like activity in both in vivo (mouse bioassay) and in vitro (mouse neuroblastoma cells assay and receptor binding assay using tritiated bre

A 44-year-old man with a bioprosthetic aortic valve suffered destructive endocarditis with severe embolic disease due to Bartonella henselae infection. Multilocus sequence typing was successfully performed with crude preparations of operative tissue as templates, and the infecting organism was determined to be typical of the Houston clonal group, although it was never cultured from blood or tissue. This is the first report of B. henselae infection in the South Pacific, and it reminds one that B. henselae is a cause of potentially lethal culture-negative endocarditis which may respond poorly to

A longitudinal study of diarrheal disease among patients of all ages with acute diarrhea was carried out in New Caledonia from January 1990 to December 1991. Stool samples from 2,088 diarrheal patients were examined for parasites, rotavirus, and bacterial pathogens. Potential sources of contamination (drinking water, seawater and bovine and porcine feces) were investigated. One or more enteric pathogens were identified in 41.8 and 40.6% of the persons with diarrhea, in 1990 and 1991, respectively. Salmonella spp., Shigella spp., HEp-2 cell adherent Escherichia coli (diffuse adherent and entero

AIM: Despite the well-documented burden of rheumatic heart disease (RHD) in several Pacific countries, the disease is poorly understood in New Caledonia. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of RHD detected by echocardiographic screening in school children.
METHODS: An annual RHD screening programme is conducted by the Health and Social Agency of New Caledonia for school-aged children in their fourth year of primary school. For the purpose of this study, we used data collected during this echocardiographic screening between 2008 and 2010.
RESULTS: Of 12,728 children screened, 5

BACKGROUND: Dengue dynamics result from the complex interactions between the virus, the host and the vector, all being under the influence of the environment. Several studies explored the link between weather and dengue dynamics and some investigated the impact of climate change on these dynamics. Most attempted to predict incidence rate at a country scale or assess the environmental suitability at a global or regional scale. Here, we propose a new approach which consists in modeling the risk of dengue outbreak at a local scale according to climate conditions and study the evolution of this ri

Melioidosis is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei that is prevalent in New Caledonia. This study aimed to characterize recent human cases, evaluate the genomic diversity of circulating strains, and develop a rapid genotyping tool for local isolates. Thirteen human cases were identified between 2021 and 2022, all of whom survived. Most cases occurred during the February-April period in both years, coinciding with extreme weather events associated with La Niña. The clinical isolates were characterized using morphological assessments, whole-genome sequencing,

The Cancer Registries have been operational in the South Pacific since 1958 (Papua New Guinea), Fiji (1965) and New Caledonia (1977) and complete cancer incidence rates are available, based on histologic data. We studied 97 melanomas, histologically confirmed, which were diagnosed in New Caledonia from 1973 to 1991. New Caledonia is located in the same latitude as Queensland in Australia, known for having the highest incidence of melanoma in the world. Standardised incidence rates (world population) were 9.82 and 7.65/100,000/year for European males and females, compared to 1.65 and 1.05 for M

A study of chlamydial infections was realized in New Caledonia during a period of one year. It concerned 1,023 patients: 775 adults and 248 children. It showed the high frequency of chlamydial urethritis in the male population, chlamydial cervicitis in gynecologic patients, chlamydial pneumonia and conjunctivitis in neonates and infants. The contamination between mother and infants was demonstrated several times. This preliminary study must be completed by an epidemiological exhaustive survey in order to determine the most exposed population and to take prophylactic appropriate actions.

We present a case of a non-provoked fatal shark attack on a 15-year old male kitesurfer in New Caledonia. The victim lost his board and was pulled by the sail along the water surface in a reef passage when a shark attacked. The shark inflicted at least two bites on the left leg, including a severe one around the knee, resulting in a quick hypovolemic shock that was fatal. The analysis of one of these bites indicated that a 2.8 m TL (est. length) tiger shark was responsible for this attack. The features of the attack are consistent with those of a predator response to a surface feeding stimulus

A retrospective study of 192 cases of human leptospirosis in New Caledonia (South Pacific) diagnosed between 1989 and 1993 showed that the disease was endemic throughout the territory. The annual incidence rate was 30 per 100,000 population, and the disease was more frequent in males (67.5%). Cases occurred mainly in March each year. Forty isolates were obtained (20.8%) and identified as belonging to serovars icterohaemorrhagiae (28), pomona (6), pyrogenes (3), ballum (2), and javanica (1). Most cases (54.7%) presented as influenza-like illnesses, while classical Weil's syndrome (fever, jaundi

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) issues have emerged in New Caledonia, particularly involving methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CR-AB). However, a comprehensive overall picture is still required to guide an antimicrobial stewardship.
METHODS: A prospective collection of antimicrobial susceptibility testing results was performed over a 20-year period (2005-2024) in the Territorial Hospital Center, the main hospital in New Caledonia. This surveillance encompassed 22 different pathogens and 28 antimicrobial agents, cov

Trypanorhynch metacestodes were examined from teleosts from coral reefs in eastern Australia and from New Caledonia. From over 12,000 fishes examined, 33 named species of trypanorhynchs were recovered as well as three species of tentacularioids which are described but not named. Host-parasite and parasite-host lists are provided, including more than 100 new host records. Lacistorhynchoid and tentacularioid taxa predominated with fewer otobothrioid and gymnorhynchoids. Five species, Callitetrarhynchus gracilis, Floriceps minacanthus, Pseudotobothrium dipsacum, Pseudolacistorhynchus heroniensis
