Report of a case observed in Malagasy Republic, caused by Schistosoma haematobium and associated with a urinary envolvement. A niridazol treatment lead to rapid recovery. Pathogenic processes of this localization are reviewed with regard to venous anatomy and parasitologic features. Venereal diseases, tuberculosis and cancer are the main affections capable to lead to mistaking. Pathology is a necessary and reliable control. Treatment is easy with niridazol or, in case of failure, with the various other specific drugs.

Five immunosuppressive regimens which included prednisone, azathioprine and niridazole were compared in pancreatectomized pigs after orthotopic whole-pancreas transplantation. The survival time was longer than in non-immunosuppressed pigs, but only in those given niridazole 500 mg twice daily was this marked. The weekly plasma insulin and glucagon values and responses to the oral glucose load 7 days after transplantation showed that prednisone 1,0 g/d and azathioprine 100 mg/d, or niridazole 500 mg twice daily, were successful immunosuppressive agents. The use of niridazole, in conjunction with snail control, in an attempt to control the transmission of Schistosoma haematobium at 2 Cameroon crater-lake villages is described. Among 810 parasitologically examined persons (1981) 277 (34%) showed positive findings. The antibody level (ELISA) in schistosomiasis much increased one month after therapy. The sanation of the parasitosis within 6 months led to the reduction of the values to the initial level without any further later decrease. Four groups of lambs, about 6 months old, were given 4 different immunosuppressiva (prednisolone, cyclophosphamide, niridazole and gestagene hormones), 1 substance to each group. Two boys with nephrotic syndrome, membrano-proliferative glomerulo-nephritis and Schistosoma haematobium infection are described. An example of a localized non-fibrous stricture of the colon due to Schistosoma mansoni infection is reported. The radiological and colonoscopic features are described. Drug resistance associated with the treatment of human schistosomiasis appears to be an emerging problem requiring more attention from the scientific community than the subject currently receives. Drug-resistant strains of Schistosoma mansoni have been isolated by various investigators as a result of laboratory experimentation or from a combination of field and laboratory studies.
