Periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory disease influenced by host-microbiota interactions, poses a significant global health burden. Smoking exacerbates periodontitis progression and impacts treatment outcomes. Interleukin (IL)-17 and IL-35 are key mediators of inflammation, yet their roles in smoking-related periodontitis and responses to non-surgical periodontal treatment (NSPT) remain underexplored. This clinical trial aimed to evaluate the effects of NSPT on salivary and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) levels of IL-17 and IL-35 in smokers and non-smokers with periodontitis. A total of 55 su

The impact of cigarette smoking on the cardiorespiratory response to exhaustive exercise remains unclear. This study investigated the smoking effect on exercise tolerance by analyzing the cardiorespiratory and metabolic variables during an exhausting sinusoidal exercise in young physically active smokers (SM) without known cardiovascular and respiratory disease. Eight physically active male SM (22.1 ± 2.2 years; 79.9 ± 4.4 kg; maximum oxygen uptake, V ˙ O 2 max 3385 ± 341 mL·min-1) and 8 non-smokers (controls, 22.6 ± 1.4 years; 74.3 ± 7.9 kg; V ˙ O 2 max 3623 ± 302 mL·min-1) perfor

Variable clinical behavior is seen in oral leukoplakia, a potentially malignant illness of the mouth that may be caused by etiological factors including cigarette smoking. Therefore, it is of interest to compare the features of oral leukoplakia lesions and epithelial dysplasia in 100 individuals, all of whom were either smokers or non-smokers, using a clinico-histopathological approach. Histopathological analysis was used to ascertain the extent of epithelial dysplasia after a thorough clinical evaluation that included the location, size, shape and duration of the lesion. Smokers were more lik

BACKGROUND: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of blindness in developed countries. Smoking is the only modifiable risk factor and is associated with faster AMD progression. While Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) supplements are recommended for intermediate AMD, their impact on visual acuity over time remains unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To describe baseline disparities and visual acuity trajectories in patients with intermediate dry AMD stratified by AREDS use and smoking status.
DESIGN: Retrospective observational study of patients with intermediate dry AMD conducted und

OBJECTIVES: Anatabine and anabasine are two tobacco alkaloids used to differentiate between tobacco users and abstainers, including users of nicotine replacement therapy. Cutoff values (>2 ng/mL for both alkaloids) have not been revised since their implementation in 2002. These values may be too high, leading to increased likelihood of misclassification between smokers and abstainers. This results in major consequences, especially adverse outcomes of transplantation when smokers were incorrectly identified as being abstinent. This study proposes that a lower threshold for anatabine and anabasi

An objective assessment of exposure to tobacco smoke may be accomplished by means of examining particular biomarkers in body fluids. The most common biomarker of tobacco smoke exposure is urinary, or serum, cotinine. In order to distinguish non-smokers from passive smokers and passive smokers from active smokers, it is necessary to estimate cotinine cut-off points. The objective of this article was to apply statistical distribution of urinary cotinine concentration to estimate cut-off points distinguishing the three above-mentioned groups. The examined group consisted of 327 volunteers (187 wo

BACKGROUND: Carotid body O2-chemosensitivity determines the hypoxic ventilatory response (HVR) as part of crucial regulatory reflex within oxygen homeostasis. Nicotine has been suggested to attenuate HVR in neonates of smoking mothers. However, whether smoking affects HVR in adulthood has remained unclear and probably blurred by acute ventilatory stimulation through cigarette smoke. We hypothesized that HVR is substantially reduced in smokers when studied after an overnight abstinence from cigarettes i.e. after nicotine elimination.
METHODS: We therefore determined the isocapnic HVR of 23 hea

Incidence of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) increased 3% annually from 1973 to 2001. OSCC's can be attributed to tobacco and alcohol, but 25% are unlinked to typical risks. Case-control studies on HPV detection in non-smoking/non-drinking (NS/ND) OSCC patients have not previously been performed. The primary objective of this study was to determine whether high-risk HPV infection was significantly associated with development of oral squamous malignancy in non-smokers/non-drinkers. A chart review of 802 OSCC patients from the UNC Pathology Archives (1995-2006) yielded 40 non-smoker

AIM: Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) is a multifunctional cytokine with a wide range of actions, and plays a role in periodontal disease (PD) progression. Smoking significantly increases the risk for PD progression. Thus, aim of the present study was to estimate salivary HGF levels of non-smokers and smokers with chronic periodontitis (CP) and to compare its levels before and after therapy.
METHODS: A total of 75 participants were recruited and divided into three groups: group 1 included 25 healthy participants, group 2 included 25 non-smokers with CP, and group 3 included 25 smokers with CP.

BACKGROUND: Mucus hypersecretion contributes to the morbidity and mortality of smoking-related lung diseases, especially chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which starts in the small airways. Despite progress in animal studies, the genes and their expression pattern involved in mucus production and secretion in human airway epithelium are not well understood. We hypothesized that comparison of the transcriptomes of the small airway epithelium of individuals that express high vs low levels of MUC5AC, the major macromolecular component of airway mucus, could be used as a probe to ident

Random migration and chemotactic responsiveness of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) from psoriatic and control smokers and non-smokers were studied in vitro and in vivo. In vivo, but not in vitro, PMNs from psoriatic smokers responded to a significantly greater degree to a standard chemotaxin than did PMNs from psoriatic non-smokers, control smokers and control non-smokers. This suggests that smoking has a selective effect on psoriatic PMNs. The possible relevance of this to the pathogenesis of psoriasis vulgaris and to palmoplantar pustulosis is discussed.

OBJECTIVES: Up to 70% individuals with bipolar disorder (BD) are lifetime tobacco smokers, a major modifiable risk factor for morbidity. However, quitting smoking is rarely proposed to individuals with BD, mainly because of fear of unfavorable metabolic or psychiatric changes. Evaluating the physical and mental impact of tobacco cessation is primordial. The aim of this study was to characterize the psychiatric and nonpsychiatric correlates of tobacco smoking status (never- vs. current vs. former smokers) in individuals with BD.
METHODS: 3860 individuals with ascertained BD recruited in the ne
