OBJECTIVES: Shigella is a human pathogen that causes shigellosis, an acute invasive intestinal infection. Recent studies in the model bacterium Escherichia coli (E. coli) provided evidence that small regulatory RNAs (sRNAs) can contribute to antimicrobial resistance or susceptibility. In seven studies of complicated and recurrent urinary tract infections, 285 patients were treated with norfloxacin 400 mg b.i.d. for 7-90 days. The majority of the patients were men, and many were elderly. Underlying diseases included nephrolithiasis, pyelonephritis, prostatism, bacterial prostatitis, prostate cancer, retroperitoneal fibrosis, quadriplegia/paraplegia, neurogenic bladder, and urethral stricture. The effect of three new fluoroquinolones on theophylline kinetics and the urinary excretion of metabolites was studied in 5 healthy subjects (3 male, 2 female). All subjects received serial, single i.v. infusions of theophylline (aminophylline, 250 mg) over 60 min after 200 mg doses of a quinolone (enoxacin, ofloxacin, norfloxacin) every 8 h for 3 consecutive days, the quinolone being administered up to the day following theophylline administration. Pretreatment with ofloxacin and norfloxacin did not influence theophylline disposition, but theophylline clearance fell from 0.054 to 0.027 l.h-1.

25 women with acute uncomplicated cystitis were treated with a single dose of 800 mg norfloxacin orally. Urinary checkups were performed 3 and 8 days after therapy and 4 and 8 weeks later. Urinary cultures, bacterial identification and antibiotic testing were performed. Success rate as based on the bacterial results was 96%. Reinfection occurred in one case only over the follow-up period of 8 weeks. This high success rate is due to strict selection of patients with truly uncomplicated cystitis and the beneficial chemotherapeutic effect of norfloxacin.
