Canine myiasis by Lucilia eximia in North America.

Myiasis is the invasion of Diptera larvae in live vertebrates tissues. It has been registered in tropical areas, but not in urban animals of North America. Moreover, there is no information about lesions description, laboratory tests, and treatment applied to canines. We report a myiasis located in the dorsum of an overweight male canine. Insect larvae were identified as Lucilia eximia, an opportunistic species that scarcely infest live vertebrates, and with no records in North America animals before. Abnormalities of complete blood count like leukocytosis by neutrophilia and serum biochemical

2014 outbreak of enterovirus D68 in North America.

Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) is an emerging picornavirus which causes severe respiratory disease, predominantly in children. In 2014, the largest and most widespread outbreak of EV-D68 described to date was reported in North America. Hospitals throughout the United States and Canada reported surges in patient volumes and resource utilization from August to October, 2014. In the US a total of 1,153 infections were confirmed in 49 states, although this is an underestimate of the likely millions of cases that occurred but were not tested. EV-D68 was detected in 14 patients who died; the role of the v

Ecology of West Nile virus in North America.

The introduction, dispersal and establishment of West Nile virus in North America were reviewed, focusing on factors that may have enhanced receptivity and enabled the invasion process. The overwintering persistence of this tropical virus within temperate latitudes was unexpected, but was key in the transition from invasion to endemic establishment. The cascade of temporal events allowing sporadic amplification to outbreak levels was discussed within a future perspective.

Molecular epidemiology of Powassan virus in North America.

Powassan virus (POW) is a tick-borne flavivirus distributed in Canada, the northern USA and the Primorsky region of Russia. POW is the only tick-borne flavivirus endemic to the western hemisphere, where it is transmitted mainly between Ixodes cookei and groundhogs (Marmota monax). Deer tick virus (DTV), a genotype of POW that has been frequently isolated from deer ticks (Ixodes scapularis), appears to be maintained in an enzootic cycle between these ticks and white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus). DTV has been isolated from ticks in several regions of North America, including the upper Midwe

Zoonotic Brugia infections in North and South America.

Nine new zoonotic Brugia infections, 8 acquired in the United States and 1 in Brazil, are described. In each, a single worm was found in histological sections of lymph nodes or lymphoid tissues. In those from North America, 5 of the 8 worms were females, all were infertile, and only 3 were alive at the time the tissues were excised; all of the patients were male. A dead female worm was collected from a Brazilian male patient. In addition, 3 cases of filarial infections in the U.S., previously identified as Dirofilaria-, Dipetalonema-, or Brugia-like, are reviewed and reclassified as Brugia spe

Major helminthic diseases of North America: a review.

Disease producing worms are worldwide in distribution. The worms of significance in North America are the nematodes and the cestodes. Diagnosis is rarely made on clinical grounds alone because the clinical presentation of infection varies widely. Examination of stool for ova is usually the definitive diagnostic step. Follow-up stool examination several weeks after treatment is mandatory. The clinical findings pertaining to each type of worm and the recommended treatment are delineated.

Intestinal anisakiasis. First case report from North America.

The first case of intestinal anisakiasis in North America is described. This parasitic disease is recognized as a public health hazard in Japan and Europe. Man becomes infected with a larval form of the nematode Anisakis by consuming raw or undercooked fish containing the parasite. Typically, patients present with acute abdominal syndromes. Clinical and reontgenographic features may cause confusion with regional enteritis. Histologically, a striking oesinophilic granulomatous reaction occurs. Anisakiasis is most effectively prevented by discouraging the consumption of raw fish.

A summary of Blastocystis subtypes in North and South America.

BACKGROUND: Blastocystis is a stramenopile of worldwide significance due to its capacity to colonize several hosts. Based on its high level of genetic diversity, Blastocystis is classified into global ribosomal subtypes (STs). The aim of this study was to conduct a summary of Blastocystis STs and depict their distribution throughout North and South America; we did this by assembling maps and identifying its most common 18S alleles based on diverse studies that had been reported all over the continent and whose Blastocystis-positive samples were obtained from numerous hosts. RESULTS: Thirty-ni

Coltiviruses and seadornaviruses in North America, Europe, and Asia.

Coltiviruses are tickborne viruses of the genus Coltivirus. The type species, Colorado tick fever virus (from North America), has been isolated from patients with flulike syndromes, meningitis, encephalitis, and other severe complications. Another coltivirus, Eyach virus, has been isolated from ticks in France and Germany and incriminated in febrile illnesses and neurologic syndromes. Seadornaviruses are endemic in Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia and China. The prototype virus of the genus, Banna virus (BAV), has been isolated from many mosquito species, humans with encephalitis, pigs,

A short history of pediatric endocrinology in North America.

Pediatric endocrinology evolved as a subspecialty from the era of biochemical and metabolic clinical investigation led by John Howland, Edwards Park, and James Gamble at Johns Hopkins; Allan Butler at Boston University and Harvard University; Daniel Darrow at Yale University; and Irving McQuarrie at the University of Rochester and the University of Minnesota during the early 20th century. The father of the new subspecialty was Lawson Wilkins, a private pediatric practitioner in Baltimore, Maryland, who was invited by Dr. Edwards Park to establish an endocrine clinic at the Harriet Lane Home at

Hospital incidence of hypospadias in dogs in North America.

A review of medical records from 17 North American university veterinary medical teaching hospitals identified 66 dogs with hypospadias. Males predominated (15:1) and cryptorchidism was the most commonly diagnosed second anomaly, often associated with intersexuality. Fifteen cases, diagnosed at 10 different university hospitals, were Boston terriers, strongly suggesting that this breed has a familial predisposition for hypospadias. Male mongrels, as a group, were seen in approximately the same proportion as their representation in the hospital population, suggesting other components in the aet

Comparison of Huntington's Disease in Europe and North America.

BACKGROUND: In a rare disorder such as Huntington's disease (HD), a global network of clinical trial sites with access to patients speeds up recruitment into clinical trials. The objective was to test the hypothesis that demographics, HTT genotype, clinical spectrum, and progression are similar in HD participants of two large observational HD studies, the European Huntington's Disease Network's European REGISTRY study and the North American COHORT study. METHODS: REGISTRY cross-sectional data were available from a total of 7,384 participants (1,125 [15.2%] premanifest and 6,259 [84.8%] manife

Prevalence of postmenopausal symptoms in North America and Europe.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate differences and similarities in the prevalence of postmenopausal symptoms and their impact on postmenopausal women and male partners of postmenopausal women in North America and Europe. METHODS: The Internet-based survey Clarifying Vaginal Atrophy's Impact on Sex and Relationships (CLOSER) was conducted in North America and Europe. The questionnaire included questions on symptoms experienced by women after menopause and the impact of these symptoms overall and specifically on emotional and physical relationships. This study included 8,200 respondents: 4,

View from North America's cardiac surgeons.

Over the last 50 years, cardiac surgery has evolved into a dominant specialty for the treatment of heart disease, especially coronary heart disease which remains the world's leading cause of death. The advent of effective stenting for coronary heart disease has coincided with a plateau and then reduction in the volume of coronary surgery in most developed health care economies over the last few years. Similarly an ageing population coupled with changes in the epidemiology of valve disease from predominantly rheumatic to predominantly degenerative disease is reflected in an increasing demand fo
