Habitat modification for mosquito control in the Ilparpa Swamp, Northern Territory, Australia.

Habitat modification is an established method of effective long-term mosquito management, particularly in salt-marsh environments. It is especially pertinent when mosquitoes are known vectors of life-threatening disease and their larval breeding habitat is in close proximity to residential areas. The Ilparpa Swamp is located less than 10 km from Alice Springs, Northern Territory. Wet season rainfall, often followed by effluent discharges to the swamp from the adjacent sewage treatment plant, create ideal sites for the immature stages of the common banded mosquito Culex annulirostris (Skuse), a

Hepatitis B antigen screening in South Australian and Northern Territory blood donors.

A standard counterelectrophoresis method has been used to screen almost 250,000 samples from South Australian and Northern Territory blood donors since 1971. The initial incidence of approximately one hepatitis B antigen positive donor per thousand has diminished as these donors have been excluded from further blood donation. There is a predominance of males in the series, and more of the hepatitis B antigen carriers are in the younger age groups than expected. A higher than expected incidence of hepatitis B antigen positives has been noted in Northern Territory donors. Follow-up of donors fou

Radon Concentration Survey in Settlements Located in Uranium Mining Territory in Northern Kazakhstan.

Among the Central Asian countries, Kazakhstan is experiencing significant growth in uranium production and plays a key role in the mining industry. The aim of this study was to assess environmental gamma radiation levels and indoor radon concentrations in the settlements of Aqsu, Saumalkol, and Arykbalyk-situated in regions with a history of uranium mining activities-to evaluate potential radiation exposure risks to the local population. Measurements of ambient gamma radiation dose rates indicated that Saumalkol exhibited the highest variability, with recorded values reaching up to 0.56 ± 0.19

Isolated clubfoot in the Northern Territory of Australia: birth prevalence and population description.

BACKGROUND: Clubfoot prevalence in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population (hereafter Indigenous population) is reportedly higher than globally. This study enumerates and describes the isolated (also 'idiopathic') clubfoot population in Australia's Northern Territory (NT), where 30% of the population is Indigenous. METHODS: In this retrospective study, medical records were searched to identify all cases in the NT born in 2009-22 inclusive. Birth prevalence was calculated by using established methods. Logistic regression estimated odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI

Influenza vaccination coverage among pregnant Indigenous women in the Northern Territory of Australia.

Pregnant Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women are at particular risk of severe illness and high attack rates of influenza infection. In Australia, routine seasonal influenza vaccination is currently strongly recommended for all pregnant women and women planning pregnancy, and is provided free of charge for all pregnant women. We sought to determine vaccination coverage, describe the trends and characteristics associated with influenza vaccine uptake and determine the validity of self-reported influenza vaccination in a population of Indigenous pregnant women who were participants of a v

Malnutrition among rural aboriginal children in the Top End of the Northern Territory.

OBJECTIVE: To calculate the minimum prevalence of malnutrition among rural Aboriginal children under two years of age in the Top End of the Northern Territory (NT) using World Health Organization (WHO) criteria. METHODS: We calculated weight-for-height and height-for-age Z-scores (WHO-endorsed references) for all children under two years who were admitted to hospital with diarrhoeal disease between May 1990 and April 1991. Weights recorded 48 hours after admission were used to allow for acute dehydration. Malnutrition was defined in terms of "wasting" and "stunting" when weight-for-height and

Concentrations of heavy metals in oysters from the coastline of Northern Territory, Australia.

The concentrations of five metals in oysters from ten locations along the Northern Territory coastline were determined during the dry season of 1989. The measured concentrations of iron, cadmium, zinc, manganese and copper in oysers were 11.6-274, 0.17-9.1, 4.79-735, 0.25-69.85 and nd-70.2 µg g(-1) wet weight. The level of cadmium exceeded the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) recommended limit at five sites. The largest fluctuation occurred in zinc and cadmium while the other metals displayed much less variation.

High burden of invasive group A streptococcal disease in the Northern Territory of Australia.

Although the incidence of invasive group A streptococcal disease in northern Australia is very high, little is known of the regional epidemiology and molecular characteristics. We conducted a case series of Northern Territory residents reported between 2011 and 2013 with Streptococcus pyogenes isolates from a normally sterile site. Of the 128 reported episodes, the incidence was disproportionately high in the Indigenous population at 69·7/100 000 compared to 8·8/100 000 in the non-Indigenous population. Novel to the Northern Territory is the extremely high incidence in haemodialysis patients o

Hepatitis B in the Northern Territory: insights into the changing epidemiology of an ancient condition.

BACKGROUND: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are disproportionately affected by hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. A proposed mismatch between standard vaccines and the HBV/C4 sub-genotype prevalent in Aboriginal people in the Northern Territory (NT) may reduce vaccine effectiveness. AIMS: To determine HBV prevalence in the NT by Indigenous status and to explore patterns of immunity following implementation of universal vaccination, using a large longitudinal diagnostic dataset. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of all available HBV serology results in the NT from 1991 to 2011 wa
