The complement fixation and the microimmunofluorescence tests were used to determine the prevalence of antibodies to Coxiella burnetii, the etiological agent of Q fever, among veterinarians and slaughterhouse workers in Nova Scotia. Seventeen percent of the 65 veterinarians and 12.5% of the 96 slaughterhouse workers tested had complement fixing antibodies to phase II C. burnetii antigen. Several cases of visceral larva migrans syndrome in children led to an investigation of the ova of Toxocara spp. and other species in stool specimens from stray dogs and cats in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Fecal samples from 474 stray dogs and 299 stray cats were examined. Ova of Toxocara canis or cati were present in stools from 26.6% of the dogs and 25.1% of the cats. In dogs the prevalence of Toxocara canis was noticeably greater in puppies (56.1%) than in mature animals (11.9%).

Using residual serum samples from Nova Scotia, Canada, we found that 87.8% of tested deer and an estimated 20.6% of the human population were infected with Jamestown Canyon virus. Human seropositivity reached 48.2% in 1 region. This virus may be an underrecognized cause of disease in Nova Scotia.

Because the Carboniferous deposits at Joggins, Nova Scotia, contain the earliest fauna of terrestrial vertebrates, the extremely well-preserved teeth of these ancient animals are of special interest. The " mineral" composition of teeth from the Joggins microsaur Hylerpeton dawsoni is crystallochemically identical with francolite, a carbonate fluorapatite. The fluorine content of the fossilized dentin is 3.1 percent, which is much higher than any previoulsly recorded for fossil teeth.

Echinococcus spp. tapeworms can cause serious diseases in mammals, including humans.
