Two-dimensional intraventricular flow pattern visualization using the image-based computational fluid dynamics.

The image-based computational fluid dynamics (IB-CFD) technique, as the combination of medical images and the CFD method, is utilized in this research to analyze the left ventricle (LV) hemodynamics. The research primarily aims to propose a semi-automated technique utilizing some freely available and commercial software packages in order to simulate the LV hemodynamics using the IB-CFD technique. In this research, moreover, two different physiological time-resolved 2D models of a patient-specific LV with two different types of aortic and mitral valves, including the orifice-type valves and int

Analysis of cholera epidemics with bacterial growth and spatial movement.

In this work, we propose novel epidemic models (named, susceptible-infected-recovered-susceptible-bacteria) for cholera dynamics by incorporating a general formulation of bacteria growth and spatial variation. In the first part, a generalized ordinary differential equation (ODE) model is presented and it is found that bacterial growth contributes to the increase in the basic reproduction number, [Formula: see text]. With the derived basic reproduction number, we analyse the local and global dynamics of the model. Particularly, we give a rigorous proof on the endemic global stability by employi

Probability of ventricular fibrillation: allometric model based on the ST deviation.

BACKGROUND: Allometry, in general biology, measures the relative growth of a part in relation to the whole living organism. Using reported clinical data, we apply this concept for evaluating the probability of ventricular fibrillation based on the electrocardiographic ST-segment deviation values. METHODS: Data collected by previous reports were used to fit an allometric model in order to estimate ventricular fibrillation probability. Patients presenting either with death, myocardial infarction or unstable angina were included to calculate such probability as, VFp = δ + β (ST), for three diffe

Nonlinear vocal fold dynamics resulting from asymmetric fluid loading on a two-mass model of speech.

Nonlinear vocal fold dynamics arising from asymmetric flow formations within the glottis are investigated using a two-mass model of speech with asymmetric vocal fold tensioning, representative of unilateral vocal fold paralysis. A refined theoretical boundary-layer flow solver is implemented to compute the intraglottal pressures, providing a more realistic description of the flow than the standard one-dimensional, inviscid Bernoulli flow solution. Vocal fold dynamics are investigated for subglottal pressures of 0.6 < p(s) < 1.5 kPa and tension asymmetries of 0.5 < Q < 0.8. As tension asymmetri

Facial plastic surgery area acquisition method based on point cloud mathematical model solution.

It is one of the hot research problems nowadays to find a quick and accurate method of acquiring the facial plastic surgery area to provide sufficient but irredundant autologous or in vitro skin source for covering extensive wound, trauma, and burnt area. At present, the acquisition of facial plastic surgery area mainly includes model laser scanning, point cloud data acquisition, pretreatment of point cloud data, three-dimensional model reconstruction, and computation of area. By using this method, the area can be computed accurately, but it is hard to control the random error, and it requires

A two-dimensional numerical study of peristaltic contractions in obstructed ureter flows.

The flow of urine from the kidneys to the bladder is accomplished via peristaltic contractions in the ureters. The peristalsis of urine through the ureter can sometimes be accompanied, more specifically, obstructed to a certain degree, by entities such as kidney stones. In this paper, 2D axisymmetric computational fluid dynamics simulations are carried out using the commercial code ANSYS FLUENT[Formula: see text], to model the peristaltic movement of the ureter with and without stone. The peristaltic movement was assumed to be a sinusoidal wave on the boundary of the ureter with a specific phy

Distance from symmetry: a three-dimensional evaluation of facial asymmetry.

PURPOSE: A new method for the quantification of facial asymmetry has been developed and applied to a group of 80 young, healthy, white adults with no craniofacial, dental, or mandibular disorders. The method calculates an asymmetry vector (distance from the symmetry) that allows both the quantification of the absolute degree of asymmetry and its three-dimensional direction and verse. METHODS: For each subject, the three-dimensional coordinates of 16 standardized soft-tissue facial landmarks (trichion, nasion, pronasale, subnasale, B point, pogonion, eye lateral canthi, nasal ala, labial commi

A computational and experimental study of veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in cardiogenic shock: defining the trade-off between perfusion and afterload.

Veno-Arterial Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (VA-ECMO) is a type of mechanical circulatory support used, among others, in case of cardiogenic shock, consisting in percutaneous cannulation of the femoral artery. Despite the widespread use of this procedure in clinical practice, a deeper understanding of the complex interaction between native and ECMO output, as well as the fluid dynamics and perfusion of aorta and its branches is still required. Herein, a numerical and experimental approach is presented to model a VA-ECMO procedure on a patient-specific aortic geometry. For both approaches

The effect of hemodynamic parameters in patient-based coronary artery models with serial stenoses: normal and hypertension cases.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the hemodynamic significance of various degrees of coronary area of stenosis (AS) and multiple sequential stenoses (MSS) in normal and hypertension pressure conditions. MSS in a single branch coronary artery pose challenges to determine the physiological assessment in the prevalent invasive intervention. The hemodynamic parameters of each stenosis are influenced by other stenoses in the single branch of MSS coronary artery. In this study, we entirely use open source tools and techniques for coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) image segmen

Time and frequency constrained sonar signal design for optimal detection of elastic objects.

In this paper, the task of model-based transmit signal design for optimizing detection is considered. Building on past work that designs the spectral magnitude for optimizing detection, two methods for synthesizing minimum duration signals with this spectral magnitude are developed. The methods are applied to the design of signals that are optimal for detecting elastic objects in the presence of additive noise and self-noise. Elastic objects are modeled as linear time-invariant systems with known impulse responses, while additive noise (e.g., ocean noise or receiver noise) and acoustic self-no

Application of spectral decomposition analysis to in vivo quantification of aluminum by neutron activation analysis.

The toxic effects of aluminum are cumulative and result in painful forms of renal osteodystrophy, most notably adynamic bone disease and osteomalacia, but also other forms of disease. The Trace Element Group at McMaster University has developed an accelerator-based in vivo procedure for detecting aluminum body burden by neutron activation analysis (NAA). Further refining of the method was necessary for increasing its sensitivity. In this context, the present study proposes an improved algorithm for data analysis, based on spectral decomposition. A new minimum detectable limit (MDL) of (0.7+/-0

Numerical investigation of full crimping to 6 mm and deployment in TAVR: coupled influence of implantation depth.

To address the inadequate representation of key physical processes in numerical simulations of transcatheter aortic valve replacement, a high-fidelity mechanical analysis framework that more closely approximates clinical reality has been developed. Based on a comprehensive structural model incorporating the skirt, leaflets, and stent, this framework incorporates the clinically standard 18 Fr crimping dimension and a release mechanism based on axial extraction from the capsule. It systematically investigates the coupled effects of full crimping to clinical standards, deployment strategies, and

Coinfection dynamics of heroin transmission and HIV infection in a single population.

We propose a model of a joint spread of heroin use and HIV infection. The unique disease-free equilibrium always exists and it is stable if the basic reproduction numbers of heroin use and HIV infection are both less than 1. The semi-trivial equilibrium of HIV infection (heroin use) exists if the basic reproduction number of HIV infection (heroin use) is larger than 1 and it is locally stable if and only if the invasion number of heroin use (HIV infection) is less than 1. When both semi-trivial equilibria lose their stability, a coexistence equilibrium occurs, which may not be unique. We compa

A new formula for predicting the position of severe arterial stenosis.

Noninvasive location of an occlusion or a severe stenosis in the arterial system is of a great interest for surgical interventions. Here, we present a new method to determine the location of arterial 99% stenosis in the arterial (sub) system. The method requires a measurement of propagation constant and the instantaneous flow rate or velocity at two sites of an arterial tree. The method was successfully tested using Womersley's oscillatory flow theory and the data obtained by a simulation of Fluid structure interaction (FSI). The effect of noise has been investigated to simulate experimental c

Mathematical study on robust tissue pattern formation in growing epididymal tubule.

Tissue pattern formation during development is a reproducible morphogenetic process organized by a series of kinetic cellular activities, leading to the building of functional and stable organs. Recent studies focusing on mechanical aspects have revealed physical mechanisms on how the cellular activities contribute to the formation of reproducible tissue patterns; however, the understanding for what factors achieve the reproducibility of such patterning and how it occurs is far from complete. Here, I focus on a tube pattern formation during murine epididymal development, and show that two fact

Numerical study of drug delivery through the 3D modeling of aortic arch in presence of a magnetic field.

Magnetic drug delivery known as smart technique in medicine is basically according to combining the drug inside capsules with the magnetic property or attaching the drug with magnetic surfaces at the micro- and nanoscale. In the present study, magnetic drug delivery in the aortic artery has been investigated. To approach the more realistic problem conditions of blood flow rheology, the effect of parameters such as non-Newtonian viscosity and oscillating input has been put into consideration. Also, the investigated geometrical parameters of arteries of the aortic arch have been chosen similar t

Studies of abnormalities of the lower esophageal sphincter during esophageal emptying based on a fully coupled bolus-esophageal-gastric model.

The aim of this work was to develop a fully coupled bolus-esophageal-gastric model based on the immersed boundary-finite element method to study the process of esophageal emptying across the esophagogastric junction (EGJ). The model included an esophageal segment, an ellipsoid-shaped stomach, a bolus, and a simple model of the passive and active sphincteric functions of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). We conducted three sets of case studies: (1) the effect of a non-relaxing LES; (2) the influence of the tissue anisotropy in the form of asymmetrical right- and left-sided compliance of the

A junction-orifice-fiber entrance layer model for capillary permeability: application to frog mesenteric capillaries.

The recent serial section electron microscopic studies by Adamson and Michel (1993) on microves gels of frog mesentery have revealed that the large pores in the junction strand of the interendothelial cleft are widely separated 150 nm wide orifice-like breaks whose gap height 20 nm is the same as the wide part of the cleft. In this paper a modified version of the model in Weinbaum et al. (1992) is first developed in which this orifice structure is explored in combination with a random or ordered fiber matrix layer that is at the luminal surface and/or occupies a fraction of the wide part of th

Restriction endonuclease digest patterns of chromosomal DNA from group B beta-haemolytic streptococci.

Scanning densitometry and computer-assisted numerical analysis were used to examine restriction endonuclease digest patterns (RDPs) of chromosomal DNA from 26 infecting strains and 44 vaginal isolates of group B beta-haemolytic streptococci (GBS). At the 95% similarity level, HindIII RDPs of serotype Ia and III strains clustered into four and three RDP types, respectively. Nine of 10 strains from neonates with early-onset septicaemia belonged to two particular RDP types (Ia-3 and III-3). In contrast, serotype III GBS strains from meningitis cases were not characterised by particular RDP types.
