BACKGROUND: Medications for opioid use disorder (MOUDs), including methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone, decrease mortality and morbidity for people with opioid use disorder (OUD). Buprenorphine and methadone have the strongest evidence base among MOUDs. Unlike methadone, buprenorphine may be prescribed in office-based settings in the U.S., including by nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) who have a federal waiver and adhere to federal patient limits. Buprenorphine is underutilized nationally, particularly in rural areas, and NPs/PAs could help address this gap. Theref

Growth in the neurointerventional field, as a result of the emergence of thrombectomy as the gold standard treatment for large vessel occlusions, has created complex challenges. In an effort to meet evolving demands and fill workflow gaps, nurse practitioners have taken on highly specialized roles. Neurointerventional care has rapidly evolved similarly to interventional cardiac care, in that nurse practitioners are successfully being incorporated as procedural assistants in catheterization laboratories. Similar utilization of nurse practitioners in interventional neuroradiology holds the capac

Challenge has the potential to create opportunities for innovation. This applies to new developments aimed at enhancing existing systems of healthcare delivery. The development of the neonatal nurse practitioner's role in the United States is undoubtedly 1 such example of an innovation that was made in response to the challenge in neonatal healthcare delivery. This challenge and concomitant change was generated by a significant increase in neonatal patient needs, survival of smaller and sicker neonates, a rising acuity level, and the accompanying need to elevate the standard of healthcare for

BACKGROUND: Future successful sexually transmitted infection (STI) vaccine programs will depend on health professionals' readiness to vaccinate adolescents.
GOAL: The goal was to examine nurse practitioners' willingness to recommend STI vaccines to parents of adolescent patients.
STUDY DESIGN: Participants rated 13 hypothetical vaccine scenarios, each of which was defined along 4 dimensions: infection; patient age, patient gender, and American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) endorsement. Conjoint analysis was used to determine the relative contribution of each dimension to the ratings.
RESULTS:

PURPOSE: To provide nurse practitioners an understanding of urachal anomalies, their presentations, and treatment options.
DATA SOURCES: Scientific literature, including articles that address the pathogenesis, presentation, complications, diagnosis, and treatment of acquired and congenital urachal anomalies.
CONCLUSION: Urachal disorders occur in 1 of 5000 persons. Complications from these disorders are even rarer. Early recognition of these anomalies can reduce the incidence of more serious complications such as secondary infections, sepsis, abscess formation, recurrent cystitis, and neopla

A pediatric nurse practitioner was given responsibility for a nursery. Her major responsibilities included: (1) daily chart and infant rounds, (2) initial physical examinations, (3) rounds with mothers, and (4) daily report to the physician on the condition and problems in her nursery. Over a one-year period of time, the PNP detected 20 serious problems, such as significant jaundice, sepsis, tachypnea, hypoglycemia, and two major congenital anomalies. The accuracy of the physical examination by the PNP was compared with that of the physician. In 72 percent of cases, the assessment of the PNP w

A recent publication of an evidence-based clinical guideline for male and female sterilisation by the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (RCOG) created a stimulus for a review of our female sterilisation service. We arranged for a gynaecology nurse-practitioner (A.O.) with extensive experience in general gynaecology and contraception to undergo additional training in counselling female sterilisation. She then took over the daily running of the sterilisation clinic using a care pathway and pre-printed letters. She had open access to a consultant (R.F.) for advice. A review of 100 conse

Mary Grant Seacole was born in 1805, in Kingston, Jamaica, to a Jamaican doctress (medicine woman) and a Scottish naval officer. Later Seacole became a doctress, nursing British soldiers during epidemics of cholera, dysentery, and yellow fever in Jamaica, Cuba, and Panama. After refusals by both the British government and Florence Nightingale to be allowed to practice in Scutari, she financed her own way to the scene of the Crimean War and then established the British Hotel to serve both the comfort and medical needs of the wounded soldiers. At night, Seacole worked side by side with Nightinga

Fetal alcohol syndrome is the leading cause of mental retardation in the United States. The tragedy is that while FAS is irreversible, it is 100% preventable. FAS is caused by maternal consumption of alcohol during pregnancy. Alcohol is a teratogen and acts in different ways to produce physical and central nervous system malformations and defects in the developing embryo and fetus. FAS is characterized by a history of maternal alcohol ingestion, central nervous system dysfunction, growth deficiencies, and specific physical anomalies. Adolescents and adults with FAS have behavioral problems tha

Information about breast cancer risk is confusing to many patients. This paper focuses on some of the more important risk factors for breast cancer: age, benign breast disease, diet, hormone replacement therapy at menopause, and family and reproductive history. Some of the social factors that can influence receptivity to risk information are briefly mentioned. With their experience in educating patients and families, NPs are ideally suited to provide information about breast cancer risk.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated already existing stressors within health care. In August 2020, a campus-wide COVID-19 well-being survey indicated high levels of burnout, stress, and mental health concerns among certified nurse practitioners (CNPs), clinical nurse specialists (CNSs), and physician assistants (PAs) within our Department of Medicine.
PURPOSE: In response to this survey, an interdisciplinary task force was formed by CNPs, CNSs, and PAs across departmental specialty divisions to conduct focus groups to gain a deeper understanding of workplace experience both prep

BACKGROUND: Medicaid beneficiaries have disparate access to buprenorphine, a lifesaving medication for opioid use disorder (OUD) that can be prescribed in primary care settings. Nurse practitioners (NPs) are a growing primary care workforce, but their buprenorphine prescribing habits compared with physicians and the impact of recent policy changes on their practice is unknown.
PURPOSE: To characterize buprenorphine prescribing by primary care NPs and physicians to Medicaid beneficiaries with OUD and to examine the impact of the removal of the buprenorphine waiver on prescribing behavior.

INTRODUCTION: Limited research exists that examines the impact of geriatric-focused nurse practitioners practicing within United States emergency departments on the reduction of inpatient admission length of stay for older patients. This represents a significant gap in the provision of care. Our study aimed to assess the efficacy of geriatric-focused nurse practitioners' integration into an emergency department setting and the subsequent effect on the length of stay of inpatient hospital admissions.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of medical records for patients aged ≥65 years
