Context of assessment in competency-based nursing education: Semi-structured interviews in nursing education institutions in a low-income country.

Organisational considerations are essential when proposing the implementation of an educational innovation like programmatic assessment. Currently, most recommendations by regulatory bodies to adopt curriculum reforms do not take into consideration the characteristics and context of low-income countries. This paper explores the contexts of four nursing education institutions in a low-income country that recently adopted the programmatic assessment approach in their programmes. The study was underpinned by the environment phase of the Design Science Research framework and used semi-structured i

Pain assessment by patients and nurses, and nurses' notes on it, in early acute myocardial infarction. Part I.

Pain is a multi-dimensional phenomenon unique to each individual. Most of the research to date on acute pain has focused on oncology, medical and surgical patients. This pilot study was designed to explore the issues of pain assessment by patients and nurses in acute myocardial infarction, and the nurses' subsequent documentation of the pain assessment. Three research instruments were chosen to elicit the information required: A demographic questionnaire was constructed to elicit relevant data on patients and nurses. The Short Form McGill Pain Questionnaire (SFMPQ) was used to measure the qual

We aimed to understand the perspectives of nurses who used the CAM on orthopaedic wards. DESIGN: qualitative focus group study. SETTING: two academic hospitals in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. PARTICIPANTS: forty-three nurses who worked on orthopaedic inpatient units and used the CAM daily participated in one of eight focus group sessions. MEASUREMENTS: structured focus groups ex

Pain monitoring and medication assessment in elderly nursing home residents with dementia.

OBJECTIVE: To monitor pain intensity, pain symptoms, and medication use in elderly with dementia. METHODS: Nursing home residents above 65 years of age, diagnosed with dementia, and showing pain symptoms were included in the study. The patients' mental status was monitored through a mini-mental state examination score and observations of pain symptoms using Part 1 of the Mobilization-Observation-Behaviour-Intensity-Dementia-2 (MOBID-2) pain scale. Community pharmacists reviewed the patients' medication use, and the prescriptions were compared with guidelines for treatment of geriatric patient

Clinical assessment of extrapyramidal signs in nursing home patients given antipsychotic medication.

BACKGROUND: We sought to quantify the relationship between antipsychotic drug use and clinical evidence of extrapyramidal dysfunction in a large population of elderly nursing home patients. METHODS: Subjects were 251 residents (mean age, 84.1 years; range, 65 to 105 years) who were taking psychoactive drugs in 12 long-term care facilities. Patient characteristics and all medication use (both scheduled and as needed) were measured during a 1-month observation period. We then performed neuropsychological and functional testing on residents who received any psychoactive medications during the st

An assessment and care planning strategy for nursing home residents with dementia.

Dementia is extremely common among nursing home patients, and it takes many forms. Accurate assessment by staff is crucial in providing appropriate care to these patients. Equally important is the ability to establish care priorities. Current staging models are so general, however, that their usefulness is limited. Thus, this paper proposes a strategy that, using basic assessment data, categorizes dementia residents according to four key determinants of care needs: activities of daily living status, behavioral problems, communication abilities, and physical transition.

Rashes in children: role of children's nurses in assessment and management.

A rash in a child can cause significant anxiety to the parents but rarely indicates serious illness. When children's nurses come across children presenting with a rash, they need the skills and confidence to distinguish between those who likely have a serious condition that warrants urgent escalation, those who likely have a clinically significant condition where appropriate interventions are important, and those who likely have a benign condition that will resolve by itself. Nurses also need to be able to use professional terminology in their descriptions of rashes and to conduct accurate ski

Assessing and Promoting Sleep Health: A Brief Guide for Nurses.

Despite the importance of sleep for maintaining health and well-being, there is a notable lack of educational curricula and training on sleep health in nursing schools and clinical settings. To ensure holistic care, it is essential for nurses to be well-prepared to assess and address sleep-related issues. This article outlines foundational information on sleep; general sleep health assessment; symptoms, risk factors, and screening measures related to obstructive sleep apnea, insomnia, and circadian rhythm sleep disorders; and practical strategies to promote healthy sleep.

Nurses assessment of development hip dysplasia: A scoping review.

Developmental hip dysplasia is an abnormality of the hip joint which is associated with an unstable or dislocatable hip. During infancy, hips should be screened to determine whether they are stable, unstable or dislocated. In Australia, this screening is often performed by nurses using physical assessment. Physical examination includes a number of assessments which seek to identify underlying abnormalities in hip joint anatomy and function. This scoping review outlines the physical assessments used by nurses in the screening and surveillance of developmental hip dysplasia. A review of the lite

A Retrospective Review of School Nurse Approaches to Assessing Pain.

BACKGROUND: When students with intellectual disability (ID) experience pain, the pain may limit the extent to which they may engage in school activities. Although school nurses are primarily responsible for addressing students' pain, there are many barriers to identifying pain in students with ID. AIMS: The purpose of the present study was to describe pain assessment practices of school nurses for students with and without ID. DESIGN: A retrospective review was conducted of 4,660 school health office visit records for elementary school students presenting to the health office with headache,
