Monitoring delirium in the intensive care unit: Diagnostic accuracy of the CAM-ICU tool when performed by certified nursing assistants - A prospective multicenter study.

BACKGROUND: Monitoring delirium in critically ill patients is recognized as a major challenge. Although involving certified nursing assistants could be a valuable help in this field, such strategy has never been formally investigated. OBJECTIVES: Following theoretical training, we conducted a prospective multicenter study assessing the diagnostic accuracy of a CAM-ICU delirium screening strategy performed by CNAs in clinical settings, compared to parallel blinded evaluations conducted by nurses and physicians. METHODS: From October 2020 to June 2022, adult intensive care patients admitted in

Adjusting to the transition into assisted living: Opportunities for nurse practitioners.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Transition from an independent living residence to assisted living (AL) is challenging. The study purpose was to understand such a transition from the perspective of older women. METHODS: A hermeneutic phenomenological approach was used to explore how 17 older women living in a Continuing Care Retirement Community, many of whom were recently widowed, experienced this transition. CONCLUSIONS: Three major themes emerged from the interviews: preplanning, executing, and adjusting to the transition. Even with facility, family and staff assistance, the transition was challe

Comparative efficacy of environmental cleaning and disinfection by nursing assistants and environmental services staff in ICUs: A multiyear analysis of multidrug-resistant organisms contamination risk.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the environmental disinfection efficacy of nursing assistants vs environmental services staff in intensive care units (ICUs). METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed 22,828 environmental surface samples from ICUs (2021-2024) for multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs). A binomial generalized linear model was used to assess the association between cleaning staff role (nursing assistants vs environmental services staff) and MDRO detection rates, controlling for surface type, department, strain type, and sampling time. Sensitivity analyses using a probit model and exclusi

Usefulness of the nurse-assisted screening and psychiatric referral program.

BACKGROUND: Major depression and adjustment disorders are common psychiatric disorders in patients with cancer, but they are often overlooked in clinical oncology settings. The nurse-assisted screening and psychiatric referral program (NASPRP) has been introduced in clinical practice to facilitate psychiatric treatment for major depression and adjustment disorders. This study assessed the usefulness of the NASPRP and compared it with usual practice. METHODS: The program consists of two stages. In the first stage, consecutive patients newly admitted to the Oncology/Hematology Unit are administ

Individual determinants of home-care nursing and housework assistance.

The purpose of this study was to examine individual determinants of use of publicly funded home-care nursing and housework assistance by Canadians 18 years and older from 1994 to 1999. Andersen and Newman's Behavioural Model of Health Services Use guided the selection of variables, analyses, and interpretation of the findings. Descriptive, correlation, and multiple logistic regression analyses were completed in each of the first 3 cross-sectional cycles of Statistics Canada's National Population Health Surveys. The determinants of use of housework assistance were older age, female, living alon

An exploration of undergraduate nursing assistant employment in aged care and its value to undergraduate nursing education.

AIMS: To explore the types of nursing skills that are learnt through work as nursing assistants in aged care; and determine how these skills help to prepare novice nurses for new graduate practice as a Registered Nurse. BACKGROUND: Issues surrounding patient care currently plague the aged care sector in Australia. Undergraduate Assistants in Nursing are undergraduate nursing students who work in a variety of clinical settings, including aged care facilities. The employment of nursing students in aged care is not well explored. DESIGN: This paper presents the findings from an open-response qu

Inpatient Nurses' Anticipatory Perspectives on Assistive Robots: Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Assistive robots have been proposed to support nursing work by offloading routine, logistical, and physically demanding tasks. However, existing research has largely focused on postimplementation acceptance or usability, with fewer studies examining how nurses conceptualize assistive robots before routine deployment, particularly in settings where exposure remains limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore inpatient nurses' anticipatory perspectives on assistive robots and to examine how perceived benefits, concerns, and implementation conditions are constructed at the preimp

Nurse practitioner/physician assistant staffing and critical care mortality.

BackgroundICUs are increasingly staffed with nurse practitioners/physician assistants (NPs/PAs), but it is unclear how NPs/PAs influence quality of care. We examined the association between NP/PA staffing and in-hospital mortality for patients in the ICU.MethodsWe used retrospective cohort data from the 2009 to 2010 APACHE (Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation) clinical information system and an ICU-level survey. We included patients aged ≥ 17 years admitted to one of 29 adult medical and mixed medical/surgical ICUs in 22 US hospitals. Because this survey could not assign NPs/PAs to

[The assistance of the ventilated infant: role of the nurse in the management of the endotracheal tube].

One of the principal duties of a staff nurse working in a NICU is the assistance of the ventilated infants. The management of the endotracheal tube is a key moment in the neonatal care and it is fundamental to prevent the ventilator induced lung injury and the change in the perfusion (especially in the brain) that may determine an impairment of gas exchange. Therefore, the role of the staff nurse is to guarantee that the tube remains correctly placed and firmly fixed in order to avoid tubes displacement and accidental extubations. High production of bronchial secretion may lead to a tube obstr

Nurse delegation of medication administration for older adults in assisted living.

Assisted living (AL) is a relatively new form of long-term care that offers residents personal care services and more independence in a home-like environment. Introduced to the United States in the 1980s, AL is changing the conventional thinking about how to care for frail older adults. One important issue to explore is registered nurse (RN) delegation to unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP), particularly for medication administration. This study provides a national perspective on medication delivery in AL settings from the perspectives of state Board of Nursing (BON) executives. Qualitative i

Pet-assisted therapy in the nursing home setting: potential for zoonosis.

Pet-assisted therapy in the nursing home setting, as a vital component of the Eden Alternative or Human Habitat program, is gaining widespread recognition and implementation. Programs such as this help to improve the quality of life of nursing home residents by offsetting resident loneliness, helplessness, and boredom. However, use of companion animals (and, frequently, birds and fish) may be associated with the introduction of infectious entities that are normally uncommon in this setting (zoonosis). Examples include psittacosis, bartonellosis, toxocariasis, Capnocytophaga canimorsus, pasture

Reflections by licensed practical nurses and nursing assistants on the violent behaviours of individuals receiving mental health care in an adult acute psychiatric ward: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Violence in adult acute psychiatric wards remains a significant occupational hazard for nursing staff, particularly Enrolled Nurses (equivalent to Licensed Practical Nurses) and nursing assistants who often provide direct patient care without specialized psychiatric training. Exposure to patient-perpetrated violence has serious emotional and professional consequences. This study explored and described the reflections of Licensed Practical Nurses and Nursing Assistants on the violent behaviours of individuals receiving mental health care in adult acute psychiatric wards. METHODS: A

Impact of surgical assistance by Japanese nurse practitioners in robotic-assisted coronary artery bypass graft surgery.

Amid workforce shortages, the involvement of advanced practice providers, such as Japanese nurse practitioners (JNPs), in surgical roles has been increasing. JNPs have recently begun assisting in cardiovascular procedures, including robot-assisted coronary artery bypass grafting (RA-CABG); however, their clinical impact remains insufficiently characterized. This retrospective, single-center observational cohort study evaluated 199 consecutive patients who underwent RA-CABG using the left internal thoracic artery to left anterior descending artery technique between 2020 and 2023. Patients were
