Using a site visit to a contaminated location as a focus for environmental health education for academic and public health nurses.

We describe a conference initiative that is distinguished by the use of a "community case study" to increase the knowledge and skills of nursing faculty and public health nurses in environmental health and to provide networking support to facilitate infusion of environmental health into nursing curricula and public health nursing practice. The Institute of Medicine's (1995) general environmental health competencies for nurses provided the conference framework. Woburn, Massachusetts, a Superfund site, served as the community case study to illustrate a complex environmental health problem. Over

EpicEDU: An Innovation to Improve Core Electronic Health Record Competencies Among Nursing Students.

BACKGROUND: Electronic health records (EHRs) are central to modern health care, yet many nursing graduates feel underprepared to use them. METHOD: To close the competency gap, nursing faculty partnered with Epic Systems to develop EpicEdu, a novel academic EHR that authentically simulates all of the features of the EPIC EHR system in practice settings. RESULTS: A total of 239 nursing and 88 nurse practitioner students completed EpicEDU simulations. Of those, 54.1% strongly agreed that using EpicEDU in simulation enhanced the realism of the simulation, 43.1% strongly agreed that they felt bet

Patterns, advances, and gaps in using ChatGPT and similar technologies in nursing education: A PAGER scoping review.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Generative AI (GenAI) can transform nursing education and modernise content delivery. However, the rapid integration of these tools has raised concerns about academic integrity and teaching quality. Previous reviews have either looked broadly at artificial intelligence or focused narrowly on single tools like ChatGPT. This scoping review uses a structured framework to identify patterns, advances, gaps, evidence, and recommendations for implementing GenAI in nursing education. METHODS: This scoping review followed the JBI methodology and PRISMA-ScR guidelines. We searched P

Out lesbians in nursing: what would Florence say?

Research and education on lesbian health has increased substantially in quantity and quality in the past 40 years, but little of this work has been produced by nursing scholars. We began our academic nursing careers as out lesbian faculty at the same college of nursing in the late 1980s, where we collaborated on the earliest studies of attitudes about lesbians in the nursing profession. Our paths diverged in the early 1990s, but we shared similar experiences in nursing education that highlight the structural and attitudinal barriers within nursing that have inhibited lesbian health studies. The work of practical nursing educators. A case study report.

In 1987 a study was carried out at two upper secondary schools. The aim was to study the working conditions of teachers in a changing environment by interviewing different professionals in the school as well as students. In the last five years, the average age of students was found to have fallen by two to four years. Another finding was that the entrance requirements had been lowered. In the same five-year period the drop-out rates at one of the two schools had risen from 5/60 to 18/81. At the other school 5/30 dropped out in 1987. Many of the teachers interviewed reported their students to b

Integrating Citizen Science into Advanced Practice Nursing education: a contemporary challenge.

Advanced Practice Nursing is internationally recognised as an innovative model of practice that expands the traditional scope of nursing by integrating specialised knowledge, advanced clinical skills, and greater autonomy in clinical decision-making. Within this model, research competence is recognised as a strategic pillar for consolidating Advanced Practice Nursing practice. Citizen Science, in turn, represents an innovative approach that promotes the active involvement of citizens throughout the research process, strengthening the alignment between research priorities and community needs. Rehumanizing Holistic Nursing Education: From Mindfulness and Spiritual Care to Transformative Clinical Formation.

Holistic nursing education is increasingly important in preparing nurses who are not only clinically competent, but also reflective, compassionate, spiritually sensitive, and culturally responsive. This commentary argues that mindfulness and spiritual care should not be positioned as isolated curricular additions, but as central elements of transformative clinical formation. Drawing on recent scholarship in holistic nursing, nursing education and spiritual care, the article highlights three critical issues: the risk of reducing mindfulness to a stress-management technique, the persistent gap b

Teaching primary palliative nursing care: A model of competency-based education.

Holistic care models such as primary palliative care offer individuals a coordinated, interprofessional and compassionate approach in any healthcare setting regardless of condition. Currently, palliative and end-of-life nursing care content is either threaded throughout nursing curricula or not included at all. As a result, new nurses report being inadequately prepared to provide quality palliative or end-of-life care in practice (Parekh de Campos et al., 2022; Lippe, 2019). A team of expert nurse faculty at a large public university utilized the RE-AIM framework to describe the development an
