Therapy of scabies: nursing homes, hospitals, and the homeless.

Scabies epidemics in nursing homes, acute and chronic care hospitals, residential facilities, and communities have become commonplace. Patients with keratotic (crusted, Norwegian) scabies are highly contagious and often initiate outbreaks in institutions. This is a review of problems associated with the management of scabies epidemics in health care facilities. A model treatment plan, readily customized to suit specific epidemic scenarios, is detailed.

The prevalence of urethral catheterization in Maryland nursing homes.

Urinary incontinence is common in the increasing numbers of aged people and is often the precipitating factor for nursing home admission. Recalcitrant incontinence may be managed by urethral catheters. In this study of a random stratified sample of Maryland nursing homes (4259 patients), we found that the daily prevalence of urethral catheter use in Maryland nursing homes was 7.5%. More than 80% of urethral catheter users were women. Among men, we found equal prevalences of urethral and condom catheter use. Previous studies have demonstrated long-term use of urethral catheters to be associated

Use of a hearing assistance device in nursing homes.

An inexpensive hearing assistance device can improve communication with nursing home residents. In patients who do not have prescribed hearing aids or who are being audiologically evaluated, voice amplification with such a device facilitates initial assessment as well as ongoing care. Such devices are available at local consumer outlets for under $30, making them available to persons who are unable to afford more sophisticated models.

A longitudinal evaluation of residents' health outcomes in nursing homes and residential care homes in Taiwan.

PURPOSE: The role of nursing homes (NHs) and residential care homes (RHs) frequently overlaps in Taiwan, raising concerns about their level of care. This study aimed to investigate residents' health outcomes in NHs and RHs 1 year after admission. METHODS: This longitudinal study included four stages of face-to-face interviews with recruited residents. Five main outcome measures, residents' functional status, broad health status (SF-36), resident's/family's satisfaction toward institutions (RSQ), mortality, and relocation rates, were assessed by generalized estimating equations. RESULTS: The

Elder Abuse in Nursing Homes: Do Special Care Units Make a Difference? A Secondary Data Analysis of the Swiss Nursing Homes Human Resources Project.

BACKGROUND: In special care units (SCUs) for residents with advanced dementia, both personnel and organizations are adapted to the needs of residents. However, whether these adaptations have a preventive effect on elder abuse has not yet been explored. OBJECTIVE: To describe the prevalence of observed emotional abuse, neglect, and physical abuse in Swiss nursing homes, to compare SCUs with non-SCUs concerning the frequency of observed emotional abuse, neglect, and physical abuse, and to explore how resident-related characteristics, staff outcomes/characteristics, and organizational/environmen

[Task interruption during medication administration by nurses in nursing homes].

Task interruptions during medication administration are a subject that has been little evaluated and analyzed in medical-social institutions, yet one that poses risks for nurses and residents. This study examines a tool proposed by the French National Authority for Health: the wearing of a vest in residential care facilities for dependent elderly people in order to assess the impact on task interruptions. The study highlights the importance of support and awareness-raising in its implementation in order to achieve positive results.

Dignity of older adults among nursing homes: A scoping review.

BackgroundDignity is a core concept in geriatric care. However, current attention to dignity-related care issues faced by older adults in nursing homes remains insufficient. There is a notable lack of systematic and proactive support measures in both theoretical research and practical interventions.AimsThe aim of this scoping review was to describe literature focussing on older adults' dignity in the context of nursing homes, in order to identify research gaps in this field and provide evidence for developing interventions to preserve dignity.MethodsA scoping review was conducted following the

Roles and Tasks of Physiotherapists in Nursing Homes: A Survey.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Physiotherapists in nursing homes perform a diversity of roles and tasks. This study aims to investigate to what extent physiotherapists in Dutch nursing homes agree on the scope and content of their professional roles and tasks. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional survey study of a convenience sample of physiotherapists in nursing homes. The questions were divided into five themes: (1) car

[Polypharmacy in nursing homes: options to improve drug therapy safety].

Patients in need of care usually suffer from multiple chronic conditions and therefore receive a high number of drugs. Polypharmacy involves multiple risks, for example, drug-drug and drug-disease interactions, adverse effects and potentially inappropriate medication (PIM), more hospital admissions, and increased mortality.Residents in long-term care facilities are particularly sensitive to adverse drug reactions because of age-related changes, frailty, and the high prevalence of dementia. Numerous drugs have side effects that lead to sedation, particularly in old age, and increase the risk of

Laxative Agents in Nursing Homes: An Example of Prescribing Cascade.

OBJECTIVES: Laxatives are among the most prescribed medications to nursing home (NH) patients, and we evaluated the hypothesis that laxative agents could be prescribed as a result of a prescribing cascade. The aims of the study are (1) to investigate the use of laxative drugs in a large sample of Italian NHs and (2) to assess the relationship between medications that can induce constipation and laxative use. DESIGN: Retrospective cross-sectional multicenter study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Individuals living in long-term care NHs. METHODS: Study conducted in a sample of Italian long-term ca
