The purpose of this study was to establish if nurses' actions when carrying out 'aseptic technique' using the 'gloves technique' are simple and based on up-to-date knowledge and do not incur unnecessary wastage. A sample of convenience was used involving 21 trained nurses. Observation and formal interviews were used to collect quantitative and qualitative data. Results showed that not all nurses in the sample applied a 'simple aseptic technique'. The rationale for the practice of aseptic technique was not always research based, though other aspects of wound management were derived from researc

BACKGROUND: This study describes an exploration of the lived experience of 13 British women with cancer of the vulva who underwent surgical treatment. A review of the literature highlighted a paucity of knowledge as many studies were conducted during the 1980s and 1990s and investigated sexual functioning only.
OBJECTIVE: An interpretive phenomenological approach based on the work of Heidegger and van Manen was used to frame the study by posing the question, "What must it be like to be diagnosed with, and have surgery for a cancer of the vulva?"
METHODS: The women, younger than 50 years, wer

Radiation dermatitis, or radiodermatitis, is a significant symptom caused by radiation therapy for the treatment of cancerous and noncancerous conditions. Radiodermatitis can negatively affect patients' physical functioning and quality of life. The Oncology Nursing Society coordinated a Putting Evidence Into Practice (PEP) project team to develop a PEP resource summarizing current evidence for the management of patients with radiodermatitis. Oncology nurses play an important role in educating, assessing, and monitoring patients for this symptom. Many common nursing interventions for radioderma

Self-feeding behavior is often the first of a chain of self-maintenance skills to deteriorate in people with Alzheimer's-type dementia and is a major determinant of institutionalization. Moreover, nurses working in geriatric settings report the feeding of patients as a most difficult management problem. Of the various features of Alzheimer's-type dementia that can affect a person's ability to feed him- or herself, ideational apraxia can explain the loss of ability to conceptualize, plan, and execute the complex sequence of motor actions involving the use of tools or objects necessary for feedi

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: In this article, we explore the gender aspects of long-term caregiving from the perspective of women providing home care for a spouse suffering from dementia.
BACKGROUND: One of the most common circumstances in which a woman gradually steps into a long-term caregiver role at home involves caring for a spouse suffering from dementia. Little attention has been paid to examining the experiences and motivations of such caregivers from a feminist perspective.
METHODS: Twelve women, all of whom were informal caregivers to a partner suffering from dementia, were interviewed on

Lower extremity chronic venous disorders are significant and common causes of vascular morbidity and mortality worldwide. Venous ulcer relapse rates are as high as 72% and account for approximately 80% to 90% of all lower extremity ulcers. Venous disorders, much like arterial disease, are often progressive and chronic in nature, resulting in enormous economic and human costs in terms of treatment, pain, and suffering. Individuals with skin changes are at high risk of recurrent leg ulcers, which negatively affect the quality of life for both the individual and the family. Prevention efforts sho

The purpose of this study was to reveal the essence of role modelling in relation to learning in the clinical field from the nursing student's perspective. Twenty-one final year nursing undergraduates voluntarily and purposefully participated as informants in the study. Each participated in a face-to-face interview with a nurse researcher. In addition, a focus group interview session was conducted with seven of the participating students. Using the phenomenological method, the essence of role modelling emerged as a core theme which was linked to the students' clinical learning experiences. Mul

Postcolonialism offers nursing scholarship a framework for understanding culture and identity as fluid and complex, historically situated, and discursively constructed. This article describes one version of implementing postcolonial theory, using examples from a research project conducted with urban American Indians on the topic of diabetes. I demonstrate the influence and value of postcolonialism throughout the research process. A postcolonial approach can help nursing researchers and practitioners avoid reproducing injustices and stereotypes, illuminate the complexities of life at the inters

PURPOSE: To address the process of mentoring the advanced practice nurse (APN) and provide suggestions for the formulation, implementation, and termination of the relationship.
DATA SOURCES: Research studies from nursing as well as other disciplines and personal experience as a mentor and protégé.
CONCLUSIONS: Mentoring is a dynamic and complex relationship that can support growth, increase synergy, and develop ways to succeed as an APN. Before entering into the relationship, care should be taken to assure compatibility between the mentor and the protégé. Major pitfalls include poor communic

The in-depth, open-ended formal interview is a mainstay of qualitative nursing research. However, difficulties with this method of data collection are common with institutionalized elderly individuals. During a qualitative study of urinary incontinence among nursing home residents, six distinct phases of the formal interview were identified: introducing, personalizing, reminiscing, contextualizing, closing, and reciprocating. These phases were discovered in the course of analyzing field notes and verbatim transcripts from open-ended formal interviews with 10 respondents. Allowing qualitative r

BACKGROUND: The paper presents findings from a study examining violence in nursing.
DESIGN: A combined ethno-phenomenology was identified as the most appropriate approach. Ethnography is to understand the culture of nursing that permits violence to occur within the profession. Phenomenology is to explore and capture nurse-on-nurse experiences of violence. The population is all nurses registered with the South African Nursing Council. The research participants are nurses employed in eight public hospitals in Cape Town during 2005. METHOD OF DATA COLLECTION: The first stage of data collection w

This discussion paper outlines an approach to developing and evaluating an educative programme primarily delivered by lay `citizen trainers' in educating student nurses, and student midwives to the impact of and experience of extended and extensive civil unrest within their communities (`the Troubles' ). This is drawn from experience within the Northern Ireland `Troubles' and all of the citizen trainers were directly affected physically/psychologically. The programme was intended to both educate but primarily to help facilitate student nurses and student midwives to better understanding to exp

A qualitative descriptive study was developed to gain an insight into the experiences of patients with operable cancer of the oesophagus and the information they received. Through semistructured interviews, participants related details about different aspects of information-giving. Key sources of information were the consultant surgeon and other patients. Nurses, other medical staff, physiotherapists and dieticians were then mentioned. Family/friends were poor sources. Positive and negative aspects of the verbal and written information given were described, but there was minimal support for au

Information-seeking behaviour is a strategy that many people use as a means of coping with, and reducing stress, throughout their cancer experience. The importance of providing information to people with cancer and many of the problems encountered with its provision have been well documented. Individuals frequently express dissatisfaction with the information given to them and experience difficulty in retaining and processing information. Lack of information may well lead to increased problems with anxiety and coping. This paper reviews and explores the literature associated with the informati

AIM: Little is known about the working practices of community children's nurses and how they manage the complexities of working with children and young people with life-limiting, life-threatening and chronic ill-health conditions and their families. This action research project aimed to find ways of managing community children's nursing caseloads that would improve the efficiency, effectiveness and equity of services and inform negotiations with service commissioners.
METHODS: A data collection template comprising six input categories was adapted from the Cornwall Community Trust's health vis

Death and life co-exist in organ procurement surgery; untimely death for one provides hope for continued life for others. Drawing from interactionist theory, the impact of personal and environmental forces and functions specific to organ procurement surgery were examined. Seven nurses (6 women, 1 man aged 34-58 years) were provided with an opportunity to describe their experiences. Three core themes emerged from the qualitative analysis of the interviews: existential issues, coping strategies, and support for each other. Nurses spoke of ways in which they contribute to this challenging work an

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) can lead to devastating neurodevelopmental consequences such as cerebral palsy, seizure disorders, and significant developmental delays. HIE in the newborn is often the result of a hypoxic event, such as uterine rupture, placental abruption, or cord prolapse. Biphasic brain injury occurs in HIE. The first phase involves activation of the sympathetic nervous system as a compensatory mechanism. The second phase, known as reperfusion brain injury, occurs hours later. Induced hypothermia, a neuroprotective strategy for treating HIE, targets the second phase to

Chronic illness affects over 1 million children in the United States annually. One such illness prominent in the African-American population is sickle cell disease (SCD), which affects approximately 1 in 375 African Americans in the United States. This potentially life-threatening disease requires caregivers to carefully monitor and supervise children with SCD. Monitoring and caring for children with SCD places heavy burdens, demands, and responsibilities on these caregivers. The psychological stressors and unpredictable nature of the disease could cause caregivers to experience a variety of e
