BACKGROUND: Volunteers providing nursing services are among the first individuals to arrive at the scene after an incident; therefore, they must use their skills and capabilities to provide necessary care for the injured to prevent problems from worsening and complications from arising. Consequently, having structured empowerment courses for volunteers before disasters seems essential. This research aimed to determine the dimensions and components of empowering volunteer nursing service providers in disasters.
METHODS: This qualitative study was conducted using a conventional qualitative cont

BACKGROUND: Lymphoedema is a progressive condition causing significant alterations to life, exerting pressures on unscheduled care from complications including cellulitis and wounds. An on the ground education programme (OGEP) was implemented to raise knowledge, competence and confidence in lymphoedema management in community clinical services. The aim of this study was to explore the impact and outcomes of the OGEP intervention.
METHODS: Data were captured before and after OGEP on 561 lymphoedema patients in the community setting. Data recorded included resource use, costs and outcomes (EQ-5

BACKGROUND: The current healthcare sector consists of diverse services to accommodate the high demands and expectations of the users. Nursing plays a major role in catering to these demands and expectations, but nursing costs and service weights are underestimated. Therefore, this study aimed to estimate the nursing costs and service weights as well as identify the factors that influence these costs.
METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre (UKMMC) using 85,042 hospital discharges from 2009 to 2012. A casemix cos

Patients who present to their GP with 'red flag' symptoms for possible bowel cancer (such as change in bowel habit or rectal bleeding) are urgently referred to an acute trust as a '2 week wait' (2WW) patient and require assessment and investigation in an efficient and timely manner. The burden that is created by ever increasing numbers of referrals requires a service that is reliable and flexible in meeting demand. This article presents the development of a nurse-led 2WW service that was implemented as a direct result of this pressure. The development of the national guideline is discussed and

The number of women in the United States choosing to give birth at home has risen substantially in the past decade, creating an increased need for understanding of the evidence regarding the provision of midwifery care to women and families considering this option. The safety of home birth has been evaluated in observational studies in several industrialized nations, including the United States. Most studies find that women who are essentially healthy at term with a singleton fetus and give birth at home have positive outcomes and a lower rate of interventions during labor. Although some studi

A nurse-led clinic offering screening for sexual infections to men within an existing HIV outpatient service was created. A retrospective case-note review was undertaken of those having a sexual health (SH) screen between May and December 2007. A total of 125 men had an SH screen, 117 identified as men who have sex with men and 84 were asymptomatic. Six (7%) asymptomatic men had chlamydial and two (2%) had gonococcal infection. Six new diagnoses of syphilis and two of hepatitis C virus infection were made. We suggest that introducing a nurse-led clinic offering SH screening within HIV services

This article is a retrospective descriptive analysis of the first 1,000 births conducted by the Nurse-Midwifery Group of Fresno County, California, over the period from 1980 to 1985. The multiethnic patient population was of mixed obstetric risk. Nurse-midwifery care was offered within the context of a comprehensive maternity care program in close collaboration with a perinatal health care team. Patient care outcomes were quite favorable when compared with county and state statistics. A perinatal mortality rate of 7.0/1,000 was observed. The incidence of low birth weight infants (5.7%) and the

A program for training health personnel for the provision of IUD services has been implemented and evaluated with 14 auxiliary nurse-midwives (ANMs) in Turkey and 13 ANMs in the Philippines. Standardized training materials, including a training manual, checklists for contraindications or complications of IUD use, and patient-management instructions, have been developed. The study suggests that similar training programs should use a reference manual as a focus for didactic training and that the acquisition of skills is best accomplished in small groups of two to three trainees per instructor. AIM: To explore nursing students' perceptions of a Service-Learning (SL) experience within a Health Education module in a Spanish prison, focusing on its contribution to the development of non-clinical competencies.
BACKGROUND: Community care education increasingly recognizes the value of non-traditional learning environments. Prisons represent a complex context where students confront vulnerability and social inequities. While SL integrates academic learning with community engagement, evidence on how it specifically contributes to the development of non-clinical competencies in correctional

School nursing has evolved into an essential field bridging health care and education. School nurses play multifaceted roles, addressing direct care, care coordination, public health, leadership, and quality improvement. They manage communicable diseases, chronic conditions, mental health, and emergencies while promoting safe, equitable learning environments. Collaboration with pediatricians enhances outcomes for students, families, and communities by addressing shared challenges like the rising prevalence of children and youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN), mental health concerns, a

Healthy People 2030 calls for schools, workplaces, and other settings to be more accessible to individuals with disabilities, thereby enhancing their overall well-being and quality of life. Yet current academic and clinical policies and guidelines are often inconsistent, with gaps or direct conflicts that act as barriers to participation in class and clinical, impacting student outcomes. Nursing students with disabilities, especially those who use service dogs, often encounter barriers in academic and clinical settings. They are a unique, often overlooked subgroup of nursing students. The over

Several universities are reporting increasing numbers of students using a service animal. Understanding the three types of assistance animals-service animal, therapy animal, and emotional support animal-will assist nursing educators in determining which animals are trained to provide a specific service to the student. Students with conditions as varied as diabetes, anxiety disorder, and seizures may benefit from a service animal. Reviewing the types of support these animals provide and federal, state, and local regulations related to service animal use will guide faculty members in preparing f

Mental health services in low income countries are inadequate. Health care delivery services in these countries are mainly focused on vector-borne diseases and HIV/AIDS. To make the situation worse, trained health workers are leaving developing countries for higher paying jobs elsewhere; this "brain drain" is robbing countries of their energetic and highly trained manpower. In response to this dire situation, Ethiopia started a psychiatric nursing training program where by nurses are trained and assigned to different parts of the country as mental health workers. Their activities range from pr
