The problem of bias when nursing facility staff administer customer satisfaction surveys.

BACKGROUND: Customer satisfaction instruments are being used with increasing frequency to assess and monitor residents' assessments of quality of care in nursing facilities. There is no standard protocol, however, for how or by whom the instruments should be administered when anonymous, written responses are not feasible. Researchers often use outside interviewers to assess satisfaction, but cost considerations may limit the extent to which facilities are able to hire outside interviewers on a regular basis. This study was designed to investigate the existence and extent of any bias caused by

Two-step tuberculin testing in staff and residents of a nursing home.

This study examined the prevalence and determinants of tuberculin reactors and the booster response in 272 (97%) residents and 218 (69%) staff of an urban nursing home where a case of miliary TB was being investigated. Many subjects were foreign born (56%), and 15% had a history of BCG vaccination (34% of staff). Testing was done with 5 TU PPD-S (Connaught). Those with < 10 mm induration at 48 h were retested at 1 wk. Test sizes > 9 mm were classified positive (reactors). A questionnaire was given to collect information on risk factors for a positive test. Results showed that 28% (36% staff an

Feeling of Guilt, Stress, and Self-Compassion Among Nursing Staff in the Workplace.

Caring for others is a core goal of nursing staff, but providing inadequate care can lead to feelings of guilt which might result in heightened levels of stress. However, self-compassion might function as a buffer, since it can help to cope with feelings of guilt. A cross-sectional survey with an exploratory approach was conducted to investigate quantitative associations between guilt and stress, as well as self-compassion as a potential moderator. Additionally, qualitative data were collected to explore triggers and coping mechanisms related to workplace guilt. A heterogeneous sample of nursi
