A theory of change of an innovation for therapeutic care and meaningful living in a German nursing home.

BACKGROUND: Demographic changes are leading to growing care needs of older people and creating a challenge for healthcare systems worldwide. Nursing homes (NHs) need to provide care for growing numbers of residents while ensuring a high-quality care. We aimed to examine an innovative NH in Germany and apply a theory of change (ToC) approach to develop a best practice model (BPM) for therapeutic care in NHs. METHODS: A multimethod qualitative study conducted from February to July 2021 in Germany involved interviews with 14 staff members of an innovative NH and 10 directors and care managers of

A modified grounded theory study of how psychiatric nurses work with suicidal people.

BACKGROUND: People with mental health problems continue to present a disproportionately high risk of suicide. Despite the relevance of suicide to psychiatric/mental health (P/MH) nurses, there is a documented paucity of research in this substantive area undertaken by or referring specifically to P/MH nurses; there is currently no extant theory to guide P/MH nursing care of the suicidal person. OBJECTIVES: Accordingly, this paper reports on a study undertaken to determine if P/MH nurses provide meaningful caring response to suicidal people, and if so how. DESIGN: The study used a modified gro

Integrating Swanson's Caring Theory into End-of-Life Nursing for Terminal Tongue Cancer: A Case Report.

Patients with terminal tongue cancer often experience severe physical pain, oral mucosal breakdown, and psychological distress that significantly diminishes quality of life. This case report describes the care of a 47-year-old man with recurrent terminal tongue cancer, demonstrating how Swanson's Caring Theory guided holistic and empathetic end-of-life nursing practice. Over a 16-day hospice admission in September 2020, assessment was based on Gordon's functional health patterns and interventions aligned with Swanson's 5 caring processes. Key issues included excruciating tumor pain (rated 10/1

Applying timing theory to nursing case management of type 2 diabetes mellitus: A clinical retrospective study.

This study investigates the impact of a timing theory-based case management model on inpatient management efficiency, self-management capacity, and complication rates in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). We retrospectively analyzed 120 inpatients with T2DM admitted between December 2023 and March 2024. Patients were divided into 2 groups based on the type of nursing care they received: an observation group (n = 60), which received a timing theory-based case management model, and a control group (n = 60), which received routine nursing care. The timing theory-based model structured

Care Needs of Burn Patients: A Meta-Synthesis Guided by Orem's Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory.

INTRODUCTION: A burn patient requiring admission to a Burn Unit undergoes a challenging treatment process whose physical, emotional and social consequences can result in self-care deficits. In this regard, Orem's Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory (SCDNT) is utilized to frame and systematize nursing interventions according to the identification of the care needs of the hospitalized burn patient. AIM: This study aimed to identify and synthesize the care needs of burn patients during hospitalization, using Orem's Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory as a theoretical framework. METHODOLOGY: A meta-sy

[Nursing Experience Applying Transition Theory to Assist the Family of an Infant With Complex Congenital Gastroschisis].

This article describes the application of transition theory to assist a family with an infant with congenital complex gastroschisis. The nursing period, from March 3, 2023 to May 9, 2023, encompassed care from hospitalization to discharge. The author employed transition theory as a guide and used physical assessments, observations, and interviews for data collection as well as behavioral processes records. The primary nursing problem was identified as "preparation for family operation process enhancement/child's congenital disease and complex care needs, and the family's response to the challe

From Theory to Competence: A Conceptual Review of Humanized Care in Community Nursing in the Ecuadorian Context.

Community nursing in Latin America requires a shift from control-oriented biomedical models toward relational and culturally responsive approaches capable of addressing persistent structural inequalities and intercultural complexity. This review develops the Relate-Capacity-Comfort (RCC) framework. This integrated model synthesizes three foundational nursing theories: Jean Watson's Theory of Human Caring, Dorothea Orem's Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory, and Katharine Kolcaba's Comfort Theory. The framework conceptualizes community nursing as a sequential process comprising relational engageme

Value Co-Creation Between Nurses and Generative Artificial Intelligence: A Grounded Theory Study.

BACKGROUND: The role of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in nursing is increasingly shifting from a support tool toward a collaborative partner. However, the mechanisms underlying nurse-GenAI value co-creation (N-GAIVC) remain undertheorized. AIM: To develop a theoretical framework for N-GAIVC. METHODS: This study used a Straussian grounded theory approach. Between January and April 2026, 27 clinical nurses and nurse managers from hospitals across China were recruited using purposive, snowball, and theoretical sampling. Semistructured in-depth interviews and online textual data fro

A grounded theory: seeking relief from flatus as relevant client-nurse action and interaction.

Flatus problems are not uncommon among gastroenterological clients and those in other care settings. Yet what clients and nurses do productively about those problems in regard to their actions and interactions and why they do so has not previously been the focus of research. Holistic health management requires trustworthy qualitative evidence to guide best practice in this regard. This study systematically developed a substantive grounded theory that details and explains the trajectory of the basic social process: seeking relief from being discommoded (inconvenienced, troubled) by flatus in th

Grounded theory study on the psychological and behavioural processes of medical nurses in response to patient incivility.

BACKGROUND: Patient incivility is a significant source of work-related stress for nurses, particularly in highly interactive departments such as internal medicine. Although such behaviours are low in intensity, they occur frequently, continuously depleting nurses' emotional and psychological resources and impacting their well-being and the safety of nursing care. Existing research predominantly focuses on the impact at an overall level, lacking in-depth understanding of nurses' individual cognition, coping strategies, and internal psychological processes within specific situations. This study

Factors affecting intent to perpetrate violence against nurses: Theory of Planned Behavior approach.

BACKGROUND: The Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) has been found to predict target behaviors. The literature examining this model lacks attention to violence toward nurses. PURPOSE: To explore the association between the public's exposure to violence and intention to employ violence toward nurses, under the TPB framework. METHODS: A cross-sectional study (705 participants) employed a self-report questionnaire. Path analysis assessed TPB variables' mediation between prior exposure to violence and violent intent toward nurses. DISCUSSION: The TPB variables, that is attitudes, subjective norms,

Nurses' management of children's acute postoperative pain: A theory of bureaucratic caring deductive study.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined the translation of nurses' knowledge of pain management into clinical practice or how nurses negotiated the bureaucracy of caring to treat patients' acute pain. PURPOSE: This study describes factors that influence pediatric nurses' actions in caring for hospitalized children's acute post-surgical pain. METHOD: Ray's Theory of Bureaucratic Caring provided the theoretical framework for this mixed methods study of ethnography and human factors engineering. Fourteen nurses were observed throughout their shifts (175.5 h) to elucidate humanistic and bureaucrat

How to achieve the desired outcomes of advance care planning in nursing homes: a theory of change.

BACKGROUND: Advance care planning (ACP) has been identified as particularly relevant for nursing home residents, but it remains unclear how or under what circumstances ACP works and can best be implemented in such settings. We aimed to develop a theory that outlines the hypothetical causal pathway of ACP in nursing homes, i.e. what changes are expected, by means of which processes and under what circumstances. METHODS: The Theory of Change approach is a participatory method of programme design and evaluation whose underlying intention is to improve understanding of how and why a programme wor

In discourse: Bourdieu's theory of practice and habitus in the context of a communication-oriented nursing interaction model.

AIMS: This paper presents a discussion on the potential of the theories of practice and habitus as espoused by the sociologist Bourdieu. BACKGROUND: The interaction between nurses and patients is a constitutive element in the nursing process and a central aspect in the theories developed by Paterson and Zderad, and Orlando. Bourdieu's theory of habitus and practices assists in understanding and explaining differentiated results concerning nurse-patient interaction. DATA SOURCES: In a study on interactions with paraplegic patients, distinguished levels of interactions, which show considerable
