Nutritional assessment of American Negro (Black) individuals of largely-African ancestry is complicated by differences that transcend socioeconomic status (SES). These include smaller size at birth but greater size from 2 to 14 years, advanced skeletal development ("bone age"), advanced dental development, a larger skeletal mass and bone "density" and a lesser rate of adult bone loss in the Black female from age 40 on as shown in a variety of bone-losing situtations, including renal osteodystrophies. Thus, appropriate dimensional and radiographic and radiogrammetric measures must be employed.

INTRODUCTION: Heart failure (HF) is associated with significant alterations in body composition, including malnutrition due to insufficient intake, chronic inflammation and increased energy expenditure. Identifying the prevalence of malnutrition and the risk of sarcopenia in patients with HF is crucial to improve clinical outcomes.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This cross-sectional, single-center, observational study involved 121 outpatients diagnosed with HF. Nutritional status was assessed using the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST), and the Subject

OBJECTIVES: Clinical experience with patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) suggests a nutritional risk in this population. In addition to the lung pathology, a main pathophysiologic concern is the viscous mucus blocking pancreatic ducts, leading to reduced production of pancreatic enzymes. Therefore, maldigestion and consequently malabsorption (particularly fat and fat-soluble vitamins) occur, resulting in steatorrhea, vitamin deficiencies, and subsequently manifest malnutrition. The aim of this study was to investigate the nutritional status and determine the prevalence of malnutrition in an adu

Heart failure (HF) is a growing epidemic worldwide with a particularly large presence in the United States. Nutritional assessment and supplementation is an area that can be studied to potentially improve the outcomes of these chronically ill patients. There have been many studies reporting the effect of various nutrients on HF patients, often with mixed results. Amino acids such as taurine, which is involved in calcium exchange, has been reported to improve heart function. Coenzyme Q10, a key component in the electron transport chain, is vital for energy production. l-carnitine, an amino acid

Surveys have shown that 20-50% of hospital admissions suffer from nutritional depletion and that there is failure to recognize its existence and significance. More emphasis must be placed in clinical medicine on identifying subjects who are at high risk of developing disease-related malnutrition. There is a need to screen patients on admission to hospital to identify those at risk of nutrition-related complications. More formal determination of nutritional status should be carried out to define the nutritional status of the patient and to monitor changes in nutritional status during nutritiona

As most diseases can have nutritional consequences, the assessment of nutritional status may help to detect an underlying disease, to identify nutritional disorders related to a given disease, and to quantify the impact of nutritional therapy. The aims and methods used for nutritional assessment depend on the circumstances in which nutritional assessment is performed. Whatever the context or aim, nutritional status is assessed through a simple, mainly clinical approach, based on the past history, dietary intake, auxological analysis, anthropometric measurements, body compartment and biological

Malnutrition in surgical patients is associated with an increased incidence of postoperative mortality and morbidity. Preoperative nutritional support has been shown to be efficacious in reducing the incidence of these complications, although the postoperative complication rate in these patients continues to be greater than in their wellnourished counterparts. This study attempts to determine whether the postoperative course can be either influenced by or predicted from the preoperative response to nutritional support. Thirty-two patients with nutritional depletion who received an average of 1

Depending on the severity of malnutrition, protein depletion is associated with general debilitation, inanition, slow healing of wounds, delayed convalescence, increased susceptibility to infection, and other pathophysiologic conditions. In an effort to decrease the incidence and severity of these complications, Hermann Hospital and the University of Texas Medical School at Houston have implemented a comprehensive nutritional assessment program to identify clinical and subclinical malnutrition and to implement aggressive, effective therapy. A multidisciplinary team approach to nutritional asse

A thorough awareness of the nutritional and metabolic status of the hospitalized patient is crucial for all persons directly involved in patient care. The catabolic nature of the body's response to illness or injury induces a serious drain on vital organs and tissues. Therefore, a complete assessment of the body's various compartments must be carefully taken, and any nutritional depletion must be quickly alleviated. Due to the alarming incidence of often undetected severe malnutrition in hospitalized patients, if becomes imperative that attention be paid to nutritional status, to decrease unne

Protein malnutrition is one of the principal factors relating to morbidity and mortality during infection. Nutritional assessment is required to determine the severity of depletion and degree of hypermetabolism affecting this patient population. Simple anthropometric and 24-hr urine collections together with routine biochemical analyses can readily allow clinical assessment to occur. Optimal utilization of dietary intake is dependent on the degree of protein catabolism and energy expenditure in excess of the basal energy requirement. Urinary nitrogen excretion in 24-hr on a protein-free diet i

(1) Background: It is important to assess physical and nutritional status using the Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA). However, the correlation between the CGA usage and nutritional-related assessments remain unclear. This study aims to clarify the correlation between the CGA usage and other nutritional-related assessments. (2) Methods: We conducted a questionnaire survey on clinical use of CGA, assessment of sarcopenia/sarcopenic dysphagia/cachexia, and defining nutritional goals/the Nutrition Care Process/the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF)/th

INTRODUCTION: Malnutrition is common in older people, is known to interact with frailty, and is a risk factor for wound complications and poor functional outcomes postoperatively. Sustaining a hip fracture is a significant life event, often resulting in a decline in mobility and functional ability. A poor nutritional state may further impede recovery and rehabilitation, so strategies to improve perioperative nutrition are of considerable importance. We provide a review of nutritional supplement practices in this vulnerable and growing population.
METHOD: Systematic review of preoperative oral

BACKGROUND: Trace-element contamination of contemporary parenteral nutrition (PN) components exists in unknown quantities and, in combination with excessive amounts of certain trace elements provided in commercially available adult, pediatric, and neonatal multitrace-element (MTE) products, could result in eventual accumulation and toxicity. This study aims to quantify trace-element contamination in components used for PN compounding to further inform recommendations for MTE product reformulation and individualized trace-element prescribing in PN.
METHODS: A total of 32 unique components (65

OBJECTIVES: We developed recommendations for the clinical management of poor growth and weight gain in Rett syndrome through evidence review and the consensus of an expert panel of clinicians.
METHODS: Initial draft recommendations were created based upon literature review and 34 open-ended questions in which the literature was lacking. Statements and questions were made available to an international, multidisciplinary panel of clinicians in an online format and a Microsoft Word-formatted version of the draft via e-mail. Input was sought using a 2-stage modified Delphi process to reach consen

Nutrition evaluation and support is an integral component of left ventricular assist device (LVAD) therapy. Malnutrition in the LVAD patient contributes to a host of post-operative problems, such as infection and limited functional capacity, which compromise long-term outcomes. Comprehensive pre-operative evaluation of the LVAD patient should include a nutrition assessment and formalized plan to initiate and advance nutrition support while addressing the metabolic imbalances associated with heart failure. An interdisciplinary approach, including a nutrition support team, is desirable to manage

There is a dynamic, two-way relationship between nutrition status and local oral health/systemic disease. Functional alterations in the oral cavity can impact the ability to ingest and swallow a typical diet. Nutrition status may influence disease progression and recovery from infection and surgery. Malnutrition and individual nutrient deficiencies can affect tissue integrity and muscle function. The benefits of a nutrition screening program in dental practice are many. First and foremost, it provides another critical component of the comprehensive health evaluation of the patient. Other posit

While total parenteral nutrition represents a powerful tool for maintaining and restoring nutritional integrity in the acutely and chronically ill patient, the enthusiasm for its impact on particular pathologic processes is largely unproved. Total parenteral nutrition can preserve body weight in almost all groups of patients studied. There is evidence for improved outcome with total parenteral nutrition in premature infants with respiratory distress syndrome, children with intractable diarrhea, patients with short bowel syndrome and acute renal failure. While this certainly does not represnet
