Opportunities and challenges for integrating family planning and nutrition policies and programmes in Burkina Faso: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Despite known linkages between family planning (FP) and nutrition, there is little evidence on whether and how these services are integrated for women of reproductive age (WRA; aged 15-49 years) in Burkina Faso. This study aimed to obtain an overview of FP and nutrition policies and programmes in Burkina Faso to understand the value, current efforts, gaps and opportunities for integration. METHODS: In this mixed-methods study, we analysed recent Demographic and Health Survey Demographic and Health Survey (2021) data using survey-adjusted tabulation and Poisson regression models to

Research, policy, and programmatic considerations from the Biomarkers Reflecting Inflammation and Nutritional Determinants of Anemia (BRINDA) project.

The Biomarkers Reflecting Inflammation and Nutritional Determinants of Anemia (BRINDA) project sought to inform the interpretation of iron and vitamin A biomarkers (ferritin, serum transferrin receptor, and retinol binding protein) in settings of prevalent inflammation as well as the prevention of and control strategies to address anemia. Our purpose is to comment on the contributions of the BRINDA to advance global knowledge with regard to iron and vitamin A status assessment in women and preschool children and to analyze the findings in terms of their rigor and usefulness for global nutritio

Participants' Experiences of the 2018-2019 Government Shutdown and Subsequent Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Benefit Disruption Can Inform Future Policy.

The federal government shutdown from 22 December 2018 to 25 January 2019 created an unprecedented disruption in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. We conducted a cross-sectional qualitative study to begin to capture how the disruption affected food security and wellbeing among a small sample of California SNAP participants. We collected data from 26 low-income adults in four focus groups in four diverse California counties. We found that participants routinely struggle to secure an adequate and healthy diet in the context of high costs of living, the shutdown and benefi

Food-environment policies for child nutrition in Ecuador and Latin America: beyond front-of-package labels and advertising restrictions.

Latin American countries have expanded front-of-package warning labels and restrictions on food marketing to children, yet childhood overweight and obesity continue to rise. Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) dominate retail and digital environments and remain embedded in school settings. Drawing on evidence from Ecuador and comparable middle-income settings, we argue that labeling and advertising policies are necessary but insufficient when healthier options remain unavailable, unaffordable, or outcompeted at point of sale. We outline complementary food-environment actions (e.g., school food enviro

From Episodic Checks to Continuous Clinical Monitoring: Nursing Policy Viewpoint on AI-Enabled Oral and Nutrition Risk Detection in Long-Term Care.

Oral disease and malnutrition are common and closely linked problems in long-term care (LTC). Monthly weights, occasional diet reviews, and infrequent dental assessments can miss gradual decline. Recent tools, including computer-vision meal-intake estimation and smartphone-based gingival screening, create an opportunity for more timely clinical monitoring when limited data capture is embedded into routine care. This viewpoint proposes a nursing-led policy framework for AI-enabled oral and nutrition risk detection in nursing homes. The framework emphasizes protected oral health and nutrition ch

Innovative Nutrition Policies and Programs to Reduce Low-Income Children's Sodium Intake in the United States: Implication for Social Work.

Globally, high sodium intake is the leading dietary risk factor of morality. Most Americans, including children, consume too much sodium compared with the federal guidelines. Socioeconomic and racial disparities place children, many of color, from low-income households and neighborhoods, at higher risk of consuming foods high in sodium. Preferences in sodium levels are determined during childhood and can be challenging to modify in adulthood. Thus, early intervention and health promotion in children's sodium intake is crucial to reducing health consequences and extending the overall life expec

From Policy to Practice: A Global Analysis to Identify Factors That Influence the Implementation of Food-Based Dietary Guidelines by Health and Nutrition Professionals.

BACKGROUND: Food-based dietary guidelines (FBDG) are essential tools for promoting healthy, sustainable diets, yet global adherence is low. Health and nutrition professionals are key to translating these policies into practice, but the factors influencing their implementation efforts remain underresearched. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to identify factors influencing FBDG implementation from the perspective of health and nutrition professionals and to explore opportunities for strengthening implementation. METHODS: Using a socioecological framework, this study employed an exploratory sequent

Adaptive policies balancing trade, productivity and cropland increases can support Zambia's nutrition security under future climate shocks.

Policies in sub-Saharan Africa are constrained by a limited knowledge of climate change extremes and a focus on agricultural production rather than nutrition supply. Here we model the impacts of future extremes on national-level calorie and nutrient supply in Zambia for production and nutrition focused policy scenarios. We identify the specific cropland, yield and import increases required to achieve climate-resilient nutrition security and highlight policy options.

Health insurance coverage for medical nutrition therapy in older women with cancer: a comparative health policy perspective on long-term care, frailty, and survivorship equity.

Older women with cancer face overlapping risks of malnutrition, sarcopenia, frailty, treatment toxicity, functional decline, and dependence on long-term care. Medical nutrition therapy (MNT) can translate nutrition screening into individualized dietary counseling, symptom-responsive support, oral nutritional supplements, and enteral or parenteral nutrition when clinically indicated. Yet access is strongly conditioned by health insurance design. Eligibility restrictions, cost sharing, limited dietitian networks, fragmented authorization, and discontinuity between hospital, home, and long-term c

Evidence of low vitamin D intakes in the Australian population points to a need for data-driven nutrition policy for improving population vitamin D status.

BACKGROUND: Nearly one in four Australian adults is vitamin D deficient (serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations [25(OH)D] < 50 nmol L-1 ) and current vitamin D intakes in the Australian population are unknown. Internationally, vitamin D intakes are commonly below recommendations, although estimates generally rely on food composition data that do not include 25(OH)D. We aimed to estimate usual vitamin D intakes in the Australian population. METHODS: Nationally representative food consumption data were collected for Australians aged ≥ 2 years (n = 12,153) as part of the cross-sectional 2011-2

Climate variability, pastoral and agro-pastoral livestock systems, and human nutrition in African drylands: a PRISMA-based systematic review of evidence, pathways, and policy implications.

Livestock-based livelihoods underpin food security, dietary quality, and resilience in African arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs), yet the mechanisms linking livestock systems, food environments, and human nutrition under climate variability remain fragmented. This PRISMA-based systematic review synthesizes evidence on the nutritional ecology of pastoralist and agro-pastoralist communities in Sub-Saharan Africa, focusing on livestock-mediated nutrition pathways shaped by ecological and socioeconomic change. Literature published between 2006 and 2026 was systematically identified from PubMed, Sco

The estimated impact of mandatory front-of-pack nutrition labelling policies on adult obesity prevalence and obesity-related mortality in England: a modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Since 2013, front-of-pack traffic light labels have been implemented voluntarily on packaged food in the UK. The UK Government is now considering alternative labelling approaches which may be more effective, such as Chile's mandatory nutrient warning labels. The present study aimed to estimate the impact of mandatorily implementing (i) traffic light labels and (ii) nutrient warning labels on population-level obesity prevalence and mortality in England. METHODS: A microsimulation model was built to simulate the effects of implementing mandatory front-of-pack nutrition labels (nutri

Changing paradigm of malnutrition among Bangladeshi women of reproductive age and gaps in national Nutrition Policies and Action Plans to tackle the emerging challenge.

OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this paper is to document the changing paradigm of malnutrition in Bangladesh and estimating how this is creating an intergenerational risk. This paper also examines national policy responses to tackle the silent epidemic of double burden of malnutrition. METHODS: Publicly available datasets of five Bangladesh Demographic and Health Surveys were used to see the changing paradigm of malnutrition among Bangladesh women. In addition to that, four national policies concerning, maternal and child health; and nutrition were reviewed using CDC's 2013 Policy Analytica

Children's Dental Sealant Use and Caries Prevalence Affected by National Health Insurance Policy Change: Evidence from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2007-2015).

We evaluated the effect of the National Health Insurance (NHI) policy including dental sealant on changes in the prevalence of sealant and caries, and examined how NHI affected sealant utilization and untreated caries in children from diverse income groups in South Korea. We used a multivariate logistic regression analysis to explore the effects of three stages of dental sealant policy (pre-policy: 2007-2009, first post-policy: 2010-2012, and second post-policy: 2013-2015) on the prevalence of dental sealant and untreated caries. Participant data (N = 8161, aged 6-14 years) were derived from t

What do we currently know about nutrition and bone health in relation to United Kingdom public health policy with particular reference to calcium and vitamin D?

Public health policy in the UK related to nutrition and bone health has been shaped by reports from the Department of Health (DH), Food Standards Agency and WHO. Dietary reference values (DRV) for a number of nutrients were published in 1991 by the DH Committee on Medical Aspects of Food and Nutrition Policy. The subsequent DH report on nutrition and bone health in 1998 concentrated particularly on Ca and vitamin D, but also briefly addressed the effect of body weight, alcohol and other nutrients. Although this reviewed more recent evidence relating to the effect of higher intakes of Ca and vi

Life-course policies to address high dementia risk in nigerian women should synergistically combat poor education and early-life nutrition disparities.

BACKGROUND: Dementia is a major global health challenge with rising burden in LMICs, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. While biological and genetic factors contribute to dementia risk, social determinants such as gender, education, and nutrition, play critical roles. Women are disproportionately affected, not only because of longer life expectancy but also due to lifelong disparities in educational attainment, nutrition status, and healthcare access. Evidence from Nigeria suggests that short stature; a biomarker of early-life under-nutrition, and poor education, are associated with increased

The relationship of dental caries and weight status with adherence to school nutrition policies among public primary school children in Riyadh: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Since 2014, the Saudi Ministry of Health and Education has developed and required the implementation of the "Regulations of Health Conditions for School Canteens." The Saudi Ministry of Education states these school food guidelines provide educational institutions a list of foods that are permitted as well as those that are prohibited, which they must adhere to. The aim of this research is to explore the relationship of dental caries and weight status with adherence to school food policy in public primary schools in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA).
