In utero exposure to commercial artificial sweeteners affects mice development and mammary gland structure.

Commercial artificial sweeteners present in the market are usually made of combination of nutritive and artificial sweeteners such as sorbitol and aspartame. The aim of this research was to study the effect of in utero exposure to commercial artificial sweeteners on the mouse development and on mammary gland in different stages (18-day embryos and 4-week-old mice). Pregnant mice of treated groups were given 50 mg/kg body weight of commercial artificial sweetener. The dose was given on day 1 of pregnancy until 3-week nursing, while the controls were given distilled water. Congenital malformatio

Long-term artificial sweetener acesulfame potassium treatment alters neurometabolic functions in C57BL/6J mice.

With the prevalence of obesity, artificial, non-nutritive sweeteners have been widely used as dietary supplements that provide sweet taste without excessive caloric load. In order to better understand the overall actions of artificial sweeteners, especially when they are chronically used, we investigated the peripheral and central nervous system effects of protracted exposure to a widely used artificial sweetener, acesulfame K (ACK). We found that extended ACK exposure (40 weeks) in normal C57BL/6J mice demonstrated a moderate and limited influence on metabolic homeostasis, including altering

Experience with the high-intensity sweetener saccharin impairs glucose homeostasis and GLP-1 release in rats.

Previous work from our lab has demonstrated that experience with high-intensity sweeteners in rats leads to increased food intake, body weight gain and adiposity, along with diminished caloric compensation and decreased thermic effect of food. These changes may occur as a result of interfering with learned relations between the sweet taste of food and the caloric or nutritive consequences of consuming those foods. The present experiments determined whether experience with the high-intensity sweetener saccharin versus the caloric sweetener glucose affected blood glucose homeostasis. The results

No indication of histological changes in embryonic somatosensory cortex development upon maternal aspartame consumption in mice.

Non-nutritive sweeteners are widely used in multiple diets and are considered a healthy alternative for pregnant women reducing sugar consumption, thereby preventing maternal obesity and gestational diabetes. While some controversies have been raised regarding their safety for human consumption, particularly aspartame, the effects of aspartame on prenatal brain development have rarely been studied. In this study, we investigated whether maternal aspartame consumption within a physiologically relevant range for normal daily consumption by humans affects neocortical development in mice. Here we

Overview and prospect of NAFLD: Significant roles of nutrients and dietary patterns in its progression or prevention.

NAFLD is the most common chronic liver disease worldwide, characterized by lipid accumulation in the liver, and usually evolves from steatohepatitis to fibrosis, cirrhosis, or even HCC. Its incidence is rapidly rising in parallel with the increasing prevalence of obesity and metabolic syndrome. Current therapies are limited to lifestyle changes including dietary intervention and exercise, in which dietary modification exerts an important part in losing weight and preventing NAFLD. In this review, we briefly discuss the roles and mechanisms of dietary components including fructose, non-nutritiv

Sugar-Sweetened Soda Consumption Increases Diabetes Risk Among Mexican Women.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological evidence supports an association between sugar-sweetened soda consumption and diabetes. However, evidence regarding this association is limited in countries that have recently undergone a nutritional transition. OBJECTIVE: We estimated the association between sugar-sweetened soda consumption and incident diabetes. We also determined if the association between sugar-sweetened soda and diabetes differs as a result of early life factors and potential genetic susceptibility. METHODS: We used data from the Mexican Teachers' Cohort including 72,667 women aged ≥25 y, fre

Mogroside-Rich Monk Fruit Extract Improves Glycemic Control Without Promoting Additional Weight Gain Compared With Sucralose and Sucrose in High-Fat Diet-Induced Obese Mice.

A high-fat diet (HFD) with excessive sugar intake contributes to obesity and type 2 diabetes, leading to increased use of non-nutritive sweeteners (NNS). However, evidence on their metabolic effects remains inconsistent, especially between natural and synthetic NNS. This study compared the effects of a natural NNS, monk fruit extract (MFE), with sucrose and synthetic sucralose, at equivalent sweetness on body weight and glucose homeostasis in HFD-induced obese mice. Male C57BL/6 mice were fed an HFD for 8 weeks to induce obesity, then randomized to receive distilled water (control), sucrose (2

Drinking Non-nutritive Sweetness Solution of Sodium Saccharin or Rebaudioside a for Guinea Pigs: Influence on Histologic Change and Expression of Sweet Taste Receptors in Testis and Epididymis.

Saccharin sodium and rebaudioside A are extensively used as non-nutritive sweeteners (NNSs) in daily life. NNSs elicit a multitude of endocrine influences on animals, differing across species and chemically distinct sweeteners, whose exposure induce activation of sweet taste receptors in oral and extra-oral tissues with consequences of metabolic changes. To evaluate the influence of NNSs on histologic change and expression of sweet taste receptors in testis and epididymis of young male guinea pigs, thirty 4-week-old male guinea pigs with body weight 245.73 ± 6.02 g were randomly divided into f

Can aspartame meet our expectations?

Aspartame is a dipeptide containing aspartic acid and phenylalanine methyl ester. It is a nutritive sweetener with a caloric value equivalent to that of other proteins and with sweetness approximately 180 times that of sucrose. Thus, for equivalent sweetening power, it contributes only 0.5% of the kilocalories of sugar. Numerous studies have shown no potential toxicity of amounts of aspartame likely to be ingested, or even of abuse doses. Although aspartame cannot fully replace sugar, it appears to be a safe and acceptable sweetener for those who must, or desire to, reduce their intake of sucr

The impact of non-caloric artificial sweetener aspartame on female reproductive system in mice model.

BACKGROUND: Artificial sweeteners, used as sugar substitutes have found their ways into almost all the food items due to the notion that they are non-caloric. Aspartame is used in numerous food products throughout the world. The primary users of aspartame include diabetics and calorie conscious people who intend to limit their calorie intake. METHODS: Female Swiss albino mice were divided into three groups (12 mice each) for the duration of 30 and 60 days consecutively. The treatment groups received 40 mg/kg b. w. aspartame orally. Chronic Use of Artificial Sweeteners: Pros and Cons.

Over the past few decades, the scientific community has been highly concerned about the obesity epidemic. Artificial sweeteners are compounds that mimic the sweet taste of sugar but have no calories or carbohydrates; hence, they are very popular among patients suffering from diabetes or obesity, aiming to achieve glycemic and/or weight control. There are four different types of sweeteners: artificial, natural, rare sugars, and polyols. Artificial and natural sweeteners are characterized as non-nutritional sweeteners (NNSs) since they do not contain calories. The extended use of sweeteners has
