Duration of tick attachment necessary for transmission of Anaplasma phagocytophilum by Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae) nymphs.

This study assessed the duration of tick attachment necessary for a successful transmission of Anaplasma phagocytophilum by an infected I. scapularis nymph. Individual nymphs were placed upon BALB/c mice and allowed to feed for predetermined time intervals of 4 to 72 h. Ticks removed from mice at predetermined intervals were tested by PCR for verification of infection and evaluation of the bacterial load. The success of pathogen transmission to mice was assessed by blood-PCR at 7, 14 and 21 days postinfestation, and IFA at 21 days postinfestation. Anaplasma phagocytophilum infection was docume

Hyalomma rufipes on an untraveled horse: Is this the first evidence of Hyalomma nymphs successfully moulting in the United Kingdom?

During September 2018, a tick was submitted to Public Health England's Tick Surveillance Scheme for identification. The tick was sent from a veterinarian who removed it from a horse in Dorset, England, with no history of overseas travel. The tick was identified as a male Hyalomma rufipes using morphological and molecular methods and then tested for a range of tick-borne pathogens including; Alkhurma virus, Anaplasma, Babesia, Bhanja virus, Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic fever virus, Rickettsia and Theileria. The tick tested positive for Rickettsia aeschlimannii, a spotted fever group rickettsia li

An Acarological Risk Model Predicting the Density and Distribution of Host-Seeking Ixodes scapularis Nymphs in Minnesota.

Ixodes scapularis is the vector of at least seven human pathogens in Minnesota, two of which are known to cause Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto and Borrelia mayonii). In Minnesota, the statewide incidence of Lyme disease and other I. scapularis-borne diseases and the geographic extent over which cases have been reported have both increased substantially over the last two decades. These changes correspond with an expanding distribution of I. scapularis over a similar time frame. Because the risk of exposure to I. scapularis-borne pathogens is likely related to the number of tic

Utilisation of rodent species by larvae and nymphs of hard ticks (Ixodidae) in two habitats in NE Poland.

The impact of host identity and habitat type on the density of hard ticks (Ixodes ricinus and Dermacentor reticulatus) infections on rodents in forest and abandoned field habitats in NE Poland was investigated. Ixodes ricinus was most abundant in the forest system, but D. reticulatus, although rarer, was most abundant in the field system. Environmental humidity and the much lower density of rodents probably limited the abundance of I. ricinus larvae in the field system, although this tick was still common on Microtus oeconomus from around small ponds. Nymphs of I. ricinus were comparatively ra

Estimation of the density of nymphs of the bush tick, Haemaphysalis longicornis (Acari: Ixodidae), by the catch effort method.

The density of nymphs of the bush tick, Haemaphysalis longicornis, was investigated by the catch effort method with flagging. The spatial distribution of H. longicornis nymphs fit the model of contagiously distributed colonies by Iwao's m*-m analysis (Iwao 1968). A sequential sampling method was used to predict the theoretical point at which to stop sampling. Our analysis showed that five quadrats (4 m x 4 m) were sufficient to estimate the density of H. longicornis nymphs with a mean density of 5.39 per quadrat. We estimated the tick density by two methods with respect to the sampling interva

The Marrara syndrome: a hypersensitivity reaction of the upper respiratory tract and buccopharyngeal mucosa to nymphs of Linguatula serrata.

The Marrara syndrome, like Halazoun in Lebanon, is a hypersensitivity reaction of the upper respiratory tract and buccopharyngeal mucosa to nymphs of Linguatula serrata. The condition follows the consumption of Marrara which consists of raw liver, lungs, trachea and rumen of goats and sheep infected with larvae of L. serrata. The adult worm is found in the nasal passages of dogs. Sheep and goats are infected by eggs from infected dogs. A survey that included 240 adult individuals in a village of endemic L. serrata infection in the Sudan showed that 20% experienced symptoms of allergic nasophar

Phenology of questing Ixodes frontalis nymphs reveals a late-winter to early-spring activity peak.

Although Ixodes frontalis is widespread across Europe, including urban and peri‑urban habitats, several aspects of its biology remain undescribed. One such aspect is the population dynamics of its nymphal stage, which has so far been reported from limited sample sizes, preventing the identification of its peak abundance. To fill this knowledge gap, we conducted a year-long monthly survey at four locations in France representing three different climates. The sampling protocol - based on the flagging method performed under bamboo bushes - was designed to maximize the likelihood of capturing the

Limited effects of chronic exposure to field-realistic concentrations of carbamazepine on Deleatidium spp. mayfly nymphs.

Pharmaceuticals are a class of emerging organic contaminants found in freshwaters. Potential chronic effects of many legacy drugs (those developed pre-2006) on freshwater biota were not investigated thoroughly before their market release. Carbamazepine, a drug used to treat epilepsy and certain types of neuropathic pain, is a legacy contaminant commonly detected in surface freshwaters worldwide, yet its potential impacts on aquatic invertebrates are largely unknown. Our study investigated the chronic effects (21-d exposure) of environmentally relevant concentrations of carbamazepine (measured

Poisoning from Ingestion of Fungus-Infected Cicada Nymphs: Characteristics and Clinical Outcomes of Patients in Thailand.

The current data regarding poisoning associated with ingestion of fungus-infected cicada nymphs are limited. We performed a retrospective cohort study of patients who ingested fungus-infected cicada nymphs and were referred to the Ramathibodi Poison Center for consultation from June 2010 to June 2022. Thirty-nine patients were included for analysis. Most were men (53.8%). Mean age was 40.2 ± 15.0 years. All nymphs were ingested as a health/food supplement. Thirty-one patients (79.5%) reported gastrointestinal symptoms. Median time from ingestion to symptom onset was 5 h. Twenty-nine patients (

Difficulties to control natural infestation with Otobius megnini (Acari: Argasidae) nymphs in cattle with systemic biocides.

A study was carried out to determine the efficacy of topical eprinomectin against nymphal infestation of Otobius megnini in cattle, where a group of 14 individuals were treated with a dose of 0.5mg/per kg of body weight applied on the dorsal midline, and a group of 14 individuals remained as control. Tick burdens between treated and control groups showed no statistically significant differences (P>0.05), and the mortality of the nymphs was similar in both groups (P: 0.828). All females obtained from nymphs of both groups were able to copulate with males from the corresponding group and laid eg

Horizontal and vertical movements of host-seeking Ixodes pacificus (Acari: Ixodidae) nymphs in a hardwood forest.

The nymph of the western black-legged tick (Ixodes pacificus) is an important bridging vector of the Lyme disease spirochete (Borrelia burgdorferi) to humans in the far-western United States. The previously unknown dispersal capabilities of this life stage were studied in relation to logs, tree trunks, and adjacent leaf-litter areas in a mixed hardwood forest using mark-release-recapture methods. In two spatially and temporally well-spaced trials involving logs, the estimated mean distances that nymphs dispersed ranged from approximately 0.04 to 0.20 m/day on logs vs 0.11 to 0.72 m/day in litt

Humoral and cellular immune response of BALB/c mice to repeated infestations with Ixodes ricinus nymphs.

The capacity of female BALB/c mice to mount an immune response and effective resistance to repeated infestations with I. ricinus nymphs was studied. An anamnestic antibody response and transient in vitro responsiveness of spleen lymphocytes to tick antigens were demonstrated in repeatedly infested mice. On the other hand, the response to concanavalin A--a T-cell mitogen, was suppressed at the same time. In the presented experiment, BALB/c mice did not manifest tick resistance after three successive infestations (with a reinfestation period of 2 weeks). The possibility of an infestation-depende

Babesia major in Britain: infectivity for cattle of cryopreserved parasites derived from Haemaphysalis punctata nymphs.

Babesia major-infected Haemaphysalis punctata nymphs, prefed for four days on rabbits, were ground in a modified Eagle's minimum essential medium containing N-2 hydroxyethylpiperazine-N1-ethane-sulphonic acid (HEPES) buffer using sterile sand or ground glass as triturating agents. The resultant supernatant fluids were shown to be infective for splenectomised calves. When attempts were made to cryopreserve the fluids using either dimethyl sulphoxide or glycerol to a final concentration of 10 per cent, only the former successfully maintained the intravenous infectivity of the organisms released

Tick-Borne Encephalitis Virus: Seasonal and Annual Variation of Epidemiological Parameters Related to Nymph-to-Larva Transmission and Exposure of Small Mammals.

A greater knowledge of the ecology of the natural foci of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is essential to better assess the temporal variations of the risk of tick-borne encephalitis for humans. To describe the seasonal and inter-annual variations of the TBEV-cycle and the epidemiological parameters related to TBEV nymph-to-larva transmission, exposure of small mammals to TBEV, and tick aggregation on small mammals, a longitudinal survey in ticks and small mammals was conducted over a 3-year period in a mountain forest in Alsace, eastern France. TBEV prevalence in questing nymphs was lowe

Factors responsible for Ixodes ricinus nymph abundance: Are soil features indicators of tick abundance in a French region where Lyme borreliosis is endemic?

In Europe, the hard tick Ixodes ricinus (Acari: Ixodidae) is the main vector of Lyme borreliosis spirochetes (Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato group). A field study was conducted to evaluate the abundance of Ixodes nymphs in the French region of Alsace, where Lyme borreliosis is endemic, and to determine whether environmental factors such as soil moisture and composition may be associated with nymph abundance. In the ten sites studied, ticks were collected by drag sampling from March to October in 2013 and 2014. Temperature, relative humidity, saturation deficit, soil pH, humus composition and
