Autism spectrum and obsessive-compulsive disorders: OC behaviors, phenotypes and genetics.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are a phenotypically and etiologically heterogeneous set of disorders that include obsessive-compulsive behaviors (OCB) that partially overlap with symptoms associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The OCB seen in ASD vary depending on the individual's mental and chronological age as well as the etiology of their ASD. Although progress has been made in the measurement of the OCB associated with ASD, more work is needed including the potential identification of heritable endophenotypes. Likewise, important progress toward the understanding of genetic

Electrophysiological correlates of behavioral response inhibition in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

In this study, we have attempted to determine the electrophysiological correlates of behavioral response inhibition in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). To evaluate response inhibition ability, we have used the Go/NoGo task and measured N2 and P3 event-related potential (ERP) components. Both the OCD and control groups exhibited greater and more frontally distributed N2 and P3 amplitudes in the NoGo condition compared to what we observed in the Go condition. However, the patients with OCD also manifested reduced NoGo-N2 and Go-N2 amplitudes at the frontocentral electrode sites

Phenomenology of intentional repetitive behaviors in obsessive-compulsive disorder and Tourette's disorder.

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence suggests that obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and Tourette's disorder are related and have overlapping clinical features. The purpose of this study was to test the following hypotheses regarding intentional repetitive behaviors in these two disorders: (1) In OCD without comorbid Tourette's, they are preceded by cognitive phenomena and autonomic anxiety, but not sensory phenomena, and (2) in Tourette's without comorbid OCD, they are preceded by sensory phenomena, but not cognitive phenomena nor autonomic anxiety. METHOD: Fifteen adult OCD outpatients without tic

Overcoming barriers in cognitive-behavioral therapy for youth anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder: Addressing parent behaviors.

Exposure-based cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a well-established treatment for anxiety disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in youth. Although a majority of youth respond to CBT, a substantial portion remain symptomatic and/or experience a return of symptoms after completing a course of treatment. This highlights the need for further improvements to this evidence-based treatment. Given that parent behaviors can negatively influence treatment, addressing parental behaviors in CBT serves as a novel and promising treatment target to improve youth's therapeutic outcomes. The au

Coercive and disruptive behaviors mediate group cognitive-behavioral therapy response in pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder.

PURPOSE: Coercive and disruptive behaviors (CDBs) are commonplace in pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and are associated with increased disorder impact and reduced treatment response. Prior research suggests that CDBs mediate the cross-sectional relationship between family accommodation and OCD symptom severity; however, the impact of reducing CDBs on other treatment outcomes has yet to be studied. METHODS: Participants comprised 49 OCD-affected youth (42.9% male, Mage at baseline = 13.7) and their parent(s) who completed a 12-week, group family-based cognitive-behavioral treatme

Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder in radically open dialectical behavior therapy for treatment-refractory depression.

Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) is commonly comorbid with major depressive disorder, and their comorbidity is associated with worsened outcomes and treatment refraction. Radically open dialectical behavior therapy (RO DBT) is a novel transdiagnostic psychosocial intervention. RO DBT targets OCPD-related traits (e.g., maladaptive perfectionism, inflexibility) and has been theorized as an OCPD treatment. This study examined RO DBT efficacy for treatment-refractory depression (TRD), with and without comorbid OCPD. RefraMED was a multisite randomized controlled trial of treatment

Knowledge and competency standards for specialized cognitive behavior therapy for adult obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a leading cause of disability world-wide (World Health Organization, 2008). Treatment of OCD is a specialized field whose aim is recovery from illness for as many patients as possible. The evidence-based psychotherapeutic treatment for OCD is specialized cognitive behavior therapy (CBT, NICE, 2005, Koran and Simpson, 2013). However, these treatments are not accessible to many sufferers around the world. Currently available guidelines for care are deemed to be essential but insufficient because of highly variable clinician knowledge and competencies specif

Knowledge and competency standards for specialized cognitive behavior therapy for pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Although exposure-based cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) and pharmacotherapy have demonstrated efficacy for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), the lack of clinicians effectively trained in these treatments significantly limit effective intervention options for affected youth. This is very unfortunate since child onset is reported by 50% of adults with OCD. To ameliorate this serious global issue the 14 nation International Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders Accreditation Task Force (ATF) of The Canadian Institute for Obsessive Compulsive Disorders (CIOCD) has developed knowledge and competency s

Sleep problems and cognitive behavior therapy in pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder have bidirectional effects.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the presence of sleep problems and their reaction to CBT in pediatric obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Moreover, we investigated whether sleep problems predict the outcome of CBT on OCD-symptoms. METHODS: 269 children and adolescents, age 7-17 years, with DSM-IV primary OCD that took part in the first step of a stepwise treatment trial, were assessed with regard to both individual sleep problems and a sleep composite score (SCS) using the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). Their OCD symptoms were rated using the Children Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (CY-B

The 5-HT7 receptor influences stereotypic behavior in a model of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The 5-HT7 receptor has been suggested as a new putative target for the treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders, especially depression. This hypothesis is based on the finding that antidepressant drugs have relatively high affinity for the 5-HT7 receptor, and that inactivation or blockade of the receptor leads to an antidepressant-like profile in behavioral models and sleep parameters. Obsessive-compulsive disorder is also believed to involve the serotonergic system and is treated using antidepressants, thus it is of interest to study the possible role of the 5-HT7 receptor in this disorder. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Schizophrenia: Conceptualization, Assessment and Cognitive Behavioral Treatment.

There is little doubt that schizophrenia (SZ) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are among the most severe disorders to impact humanity. They are both common, significantly disabling and have the tendency to strike during critical developmental periods in a young person's life. Schizophrenia affects approximately 1% of the global population and OCD has a lifetime prevalence of between 2% and 3% in the general population. The comorbidities in both SZ and OCD are common and frequently diagnosed, and research has generally found that comorbidities are associated with conditions that are more

A Review of Motivational Interviewing in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Although cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a highly effective treatment for individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), a portion people with OCD do not benefit fully from CBT due to ambivalence about participating in treatment, nonadherence to exposure exercises, and dropout. This paper reviews the promising evidence for motivational interviewing (MI) as a therapeutic approach that is well suited to address these issues and potentially improve treatment outcomes. It will also provide a discussion of MI processes that may enhance CBT for OCD which can foster a collaborative relat

Symptom presentation and outcome of cognitive-behavioral therapy for obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Previous researchers have classified obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) patients by the themes of their obsessions and compulsions (e.g., washing, checking); however, mental compulsions have not been adequately assessed in these studies. The authors conducted 2 studies using a large sample of OCD patients (N=132). In the 1st study, they categorized patients on the basis of symptom presentation, giving adequate consideration to mental compulsions. Five patient clusters were identified: harming, contamination, hoarding, unacceptable thoughts, and symmetry. Mental compulsions were most prevalent

A controlled study of Tourette syndrome. IV. Obsessions, compulsions, and schizoid behaviors.

To determine the frequency of obsessive, compulsive, and schizoid behaviors in Tourette syndrome (TS), we prospectively questioned 246 patients with TS, 17 with attention-deficit disorder (ADD), 15 with ADD due to a TS gene, and 47 random controls. The comparative frequency of obsessive, compulsive, and repetitive behaviors--such as obsessive unpleasant thoughts, obsessive silly thoughts, echolalia, palilalia, touching things excessively, touching things a specific number of times, touching others excessively, sexual touching, biting or hurting oneself, head banging, rocking, mimicking others,

Morbid jealousy featuring as obsessive-compulsive neurosis: treatment by behavioral psychotherapy.

Morbid jealousy can occasionally be indistinguishable from obsessive-compulsive neurosis and then be partially amenable to broad-spectrum behavioural treatment. This can involve the partner and includes (a) methods to reduce jealousy and (b) other methods where appropriate, such as social skills training, and sex and marital therapy. This pilot study describes such treatment of four jealous out-patients. Rituals improved in three patients but ruminations in only one. Of three patients who were depressed at the start of treatment, two improved in rituals and in mood. The patient who failed was

Co-Occurring Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Compulsive Sexual Behavior: Clinical Features and Psychiatric Comorbidities.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) commonly co-occurs with other psychiatric conditions. Though research is limited, there is preliminary evidence that OCD also co-occurs with compulsive sexual behavior (CSB). Yet, few studies have investigated the demographic, clinical, and psychiatric comorbidities associated with co-occurring OCD and CSB. To address this gap, the current study aimed to evaluate rates of co-occurring OCD and CSB, identify demographic and clinical factors associated with comorbid OCD and CSB, and assess associated psychiatric comorbidity. Participants (N = 950) were patients

[Obsessive-compulsive behavior caused by bilateral lesions of the lenticular nuclei. A new case].

Another case of obsessive behaviour as the consequence of lentiform nuclei lesions is reported. All the aspects of an obsessive neurosis were present: irresistible compulsiveness, acute anxiety in case of non accomplishment, magic-like clues. The symptoms appeared after a carbon monoxide poisoning, in a 31-years-old woman who had previously a pathological personality, of the psychopathic type, but without obsessive features. The onset of compulsions was paralleled by frontal-like psychological changes, but there was no reduction of intellectual or mnesic functions. A previous depressive state

Parental morphine exposure affects repetitive grooming actions and marble burying behavior in the offspring: Potential relevance for obsessive-compulsive like behavior.

Family, adoption and twin studies have highlighted the significant role of heritable influences on individual differences in opioid addiction. Meanwhile, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a disorder wherein the individual experiences recurring thoughts that cause irrational fears and anxiety. In the present study, adult male and female rats received morphine solution for 21 days and were drug-free for 10 days. Offspring were used in 4 distinct groups; (1) paternal morphine-exposed, (2) maternal morphine-exposed, (3) maternal and paternal morphine-exposed, and (4) drug-naïve subjects. We a
