Context specific realities and experiences of nurses and midwives in basic emergency obstetric and newborn care services in two district hospitals in Rwanda: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: In low and middle-income countries, nurses and midwives are the frontline healthcare workers in obstetric care. Insights into experiences of these healthcare workers in managing obstetric emergencies are critical for improving the quality of care. This article presents such insights, from the nurses and midwives working in Rwandan district hospitals, who reflected on their experiences of managing the most common birth-related complications; postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) and newborn asphyxia. Rwanda has made remarkable progress in obstetric care. However, challenges remain in the prov

Whose Knowledge Counts in Labour? Obstetric Nurses Negotiating Clinical Judgement, Algorithmic Authority and Woman-Centred Care in Artificial Intelligence-Enhanced Foetal Monitoring.

Artificial intelligence-enhanced foetal monitoring is entering intrapartum care, yet little is known about how it reshapes the credibility of nursing knowledge, professional authority and relational practice. This interpretive description study explored how obstetric nurses negotiated clinical judgement, autonomy and woman-centred care while working with an artificial intelligence-enhanced cardiotocography system in a physician-led tertiary maternity service in Saudi Arabia. Semi-structured interviews with 18 obstetric nurses, each with 6 months to 4 years' experience of the system, were analy

Are most patients on the labour floor in active labour? A descriptive study of a Canadian obstetrical unit.

INTRODUCTION: In its guideline on intrapartum fetal surveillance, the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) recommended the availability of 1:1 nursing care (1 nurse to 1 patient) for women in active labour. The common perception is that the majority of women in labour and delivery units are in active labour. Identifying the proportion of women in active labour versus those who are not in active labour is crucial for the allocation of nursing care resources. OBJECTIVES: We sought to obtain a quantitative description of our obstetrical population to determine the distrib

Communication to facilitate care of the obstetric surgical patient in a postanesthesia care setting.

Perinatal clientele have become more complex in their presentation and care today than ever before, requiring care in units other than the traditional obstetric or perinatal unit. Therefore, it is extremely important that the nurses caring for these patients know the associated standards of care, understand the importance of communication, and work to ensure the safety of the patient. This article provides an overview of the standards of ASPAN and the Association of Women's Health, Obstetrics, and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN), guidance on initial and ongoing assessments of this population, and emp

Bacteriological research and 'puerperal' fever: female health and childbirth in late colonial India.

This article explores female healthcare at the crossroads of bacteriology and obstetric research. Puerperal fever or childbed fever manifested as an epidemic since the nineteenth century, and in both Europe and America, it charted a distinct course for bacteriological research. With the identification of bacteriological causes, new sets of public health regimes were instituted in both regions. The experience of the colonies, however, differed. This paper focusses on how colonial discourse on obstetric nursing, midwifery, clinical hygiene, and maternal healthcare can be positioned in this globa
