BACKGROUND: Surgical site infections (SSIs) are among the most common postoperative complications, contributing significantly to maternal morbidity and healthcare burden worldwide. Obstetric procedures, particularly cesarean sections, are prone to SSIs due to exposure to vaginal and enteric flora, patient comorbidities, and procedural factors. This study aimed to assess the incidence, risk factors, comorbidities, and microbiological characteristics of SSIs in obstetric surgical patients.
METHODS: An observational, cross-sectional study was conducted over 12 months in the Department of Obstetr

BACKGROUND: Interest in medical malpractice and areas of medicolegal vulnerability for practicing obstetricians and gynecologists has grown substantially, and many providers report changing surgical practice out of fear of litigation. Furthermore, education on medical malpractice and risk management is lacking for obstetrics and gynecology trainees. Recent obstetric and gynecologic malpractice claims data are lacking. We report on recent trends in malpractice claims for obstetrics and gynecology procedures, and compare these trends to those of other medical specialties.

A revision of tetanus points of entry in 229 tetanic patients who were cared for at the Hospital del Mar, Barcelona, between 1970 and 1983, i carried out in order to determine in which kind of patients a adequate prophylaxis is not performed. It is found that 83% of point of entry are wounds which are not medically assisted. At the same time points of entry are classified in four main groups: a first group consisting of wounds localized in head and extremities (46.8%), second group to contaminated intramuscular injections (21.8%) a third group related to surgical and obstetric procedures (15.3

Nausea and vomiting is a troublesome side-effect that occurs more frequently during obstetric and gynecological procedures than during most other surgical procedures. Recent research has focused on the efficacy and safety of new antiemetic medications, primarily 5-hydroxytryptamine subtype 3 receptor antagonists, as well as clinical comparisons of these new drugs with older, established antiemetics. In the current healthcare environment, the cost-effectiveness of available antiemetic therapies has also become increasingly important, and this has been addressed in some of the recent literature.

BACKGROUND: The management of obstetric rectovaginal fistula (RVF) is challenging for the surgeon. The best surgical procedure to repair RVFs, specifically after obstetric anal sphincter injury, has not been extensively studied. The objective was to compare the success of the different procedures performed to repair obstetric RVF.
METHODS: The literature search was carried out on PubMed® and Web of Science® from database inception until 31 December 2022. Selection criteria were: (1) patients with a diagnosis of obstetric-related RVF; (2) patients treated surgically with no restriction concern

Expanded surgical capacities are required to treat obstetric fistulas. Achieving a balance between relative ease of access to services and use of the appropriate clinical setting is difficult. This article asks, "Are obstetric fistulas best repaired locally, at the district hospital where more women would have greater access, or is it necessary to provide these services at a tertiary referral or fistula center, where specialized surgical procedures can be conducted? Each possibility has advantages and disadvantages. The author concludes that 3 critical factors are necessary to provide safe and

BACKGROUND: When conservative options such as the use of vaginal dilators fail, the McIndoe technique may be used in the surgical treatment of a foreshortened vagina. The McIndoe procedure, an approach commonly used for the treatment of vaginal agenesis, requires a mold over which a skin graft is sutured and placed inside the vagina. In most surgical descriptions, this mold is made from non-sterile foam, condoms, or gloves. Because makeshift molds can no longer be used in operating rooms owing to strict regulations, alternative methods must be employed.

Obstetrical vesicovaginal fistulas are secondary to dystocia. Late and inappropriate treatment are still a health public problem in under development countries. In five years (1993-1997), twelve vesicovaginal fistulas were repertored in the department of obstetrics and gynaecology of Casablanca (Morocco) with a frequency of 0.33@1000 deliveries and 2.4 new cases a year. 80% of the cases occurred after a long labour without efficient obstetrical care. Most of the cases (75%) were simple with an easy surgical treatment. All the fistulas were resolved after one or two surgical procedures realised

Obstetric haemorrhage is the leading cause of maternal death worldwide (27.1%) and more than 66% of its deaths were classified as postpartum haemorrhage (PPH). The most common cause of PPH is uterine atony. Obstetrician should be skillful in managing obstetric emergencies; especially pertaining to PPH. Application of the B-Lynch suture on an atonic uterus is one of the surgical options in PPH patients who wish to conserve the uterus and it has a very high success rate.We present a primigravida patient who developed massive primary PPH followed by disseminated intravascular coagulation, which w

OBJECTIVE: Urinary system injuries may occur iatrogenically during some surgical procedures especially gynecological and obstetrical surgeries. Unfortunately, these injuries can lead to serious complications in patients. In this multicentric study, we aimed to review and report our experiences and results of urinary tract injuries identified during gynecological and obstetrical surgery.
METHODS: We included women with urinary tract injuries during gynecological and obstetrical surgeries between January 2018 and October 2023 at four centers. Detailed data collected include patient demographics

Genital hemorrhage continues to be the primary cause of death among fertile women. Hysterectomy, when practiced as a second surgical procedure following an obstetric event, and without having been planned, is an ongoing therapeutic resource. The author depicts the risk profile of women who could eventually undergo obstetric hysterectomy. Certain pathologies, guidelines, surgical technique instructions, and other surgical manouvers are also presented. The causes of surgical re-intervention and other surgical techniques, as well as massive blood loss, and morbidity are assessed. The authors fina

BACKGROUND: Women with unfavorable obstetric history can benefit from prophylactic cerclage ("history indicated") which can be performed vaginally or transabdominally with laparoscopic techniques. The aim of our study is to evaluate the effectiveness in the prevention of preterm birth of the vaginal technique and of the minimally invasive laparoscopic technique in women with an unfavorable obstetric history.
METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study examining elective cerclages performed in women with adverse obstetrics history. The primary outcome was rate of early preterm and second tr

OBJECTIVE: To identify criteria to guide surgeons regarding indications for use of the Singapore and gracilis muscle flaps in obstetric fistula repair.
METHODS: This is a retrospective case series. Obstetric fistula surgeons in Lilongwe, Malawi, have been incorporating plastic surgery techniques with the Singapore and gracilis muscle flaps since collaborating with plastic surgeons in 2016. We describe the surgical outcomes of procedures utilizing each flap individually and those using both.
RESULTS: Between February 2016 and June 2019, 69 patients received a flap at the time of obstetric fis

Postpartum haemorrhage is a serious obstetric problem. Two to five percent of deliveries may lead to postpartum haemorrhage with a blood loss > 1000 ml within the first 24 hours. One of the causes is uterine atony. One case of postpartum atony with excess bleeding is presented. The B-Lynch surgical technique was used for control of the haemorrhage without any side effects. The technique is surgically easy, and effective. It is advisable to use before other surgical procedures are effectuated.

INTRODUCTION: Plastic surgeons are often consulted by other surgical teams for management of wound dehiscence following abdominopelvic surgery.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to determine whether operative debridement and primary closure of abdominopelvic wounds are safe and expeditious for patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on a database of patients who underwent operative debridement and closure at a single institution between January 2011 and December 2015 for dehisced abdominal or pelvic wounds acquired from prior obstetric, gynecologic, tran

The paper presents two case studies to illustrate the complexity of repairing obstetric fistula (OF) with neourethral construction when complete circumferential destruction occurred. Using fictitious names, the author describes the personal story and contexts leading to OF development and depression, surgical options, and the prognosis of repair. These cases were documented at the Barhirdar Hamlin Fistula Center in Northern Ethiopia.

During the French Revolution, obstetrics underwent substantial transformations in practice, teaching, and the physical spaces where it was conducted. The revolutionary authorities implemented reforms in French medical institutions that promoted an instrument-centred style and the dissemination of novel surgical techniques in obstetrics. The selection of professors for the obstetrics chair at the newly established École de santé and the appointment of chiefs for the new maternity ward in Paris favoured proponents of a mechanistic approach to labour assistance. This essay explores the theoretica
